Hey,

Im new to the forums and new to cars in general.

My dad runs an import business and got me a cheap deal on a stock 92 Skyline R32 GTS-t (the 1 in the pic) which should land in AUS around the end of the year.

Im looking for a quick car that can out run moded rex's and 180's (which my mates have) but im not sure which is the best track to take.

I have a few options open:

1) do i keep the GTS-T (and mod that)

2) Save up another $8-10k sell it and buy a gtr

3) Sell it and buy a GTiR.

4) Somthing alse???

Honestly

if u r new to cars...best thing to go out there is to buy a rwd car under 5k and have some fun with it, perhaps crash it, perhaps learn to drive it properly.

Once there, pick up the gtst, or the gtir, then again, ur tastes may have changed once u learnt more abt cars in general.

Or u could just use the gtst as ur experimental mule and perhaps trash it, and most likely crash it, depending on how good your financial position is.

For 8 - 10k you can get a fair bit done on a stock gtst. But nothing beats the gtr

Intercooler fitted - $1200

Power FC with tuning - $2100

Turbo back Exhaust - $1000

boost tee - $80

Nismo fuel pump - $380

Injectors - $1000

Cams - $1300

theirs probly more to go that i've missed, thats just over $7,000

GTiR's are very quick once slightly modified, i wouldn't underestimate these beat's.

learn to drive first and then go out an aquire a tase..............dont commit to something unless you've tried it. you might find a GTR is not your style of driving and you'd be better with a RWD. drive as many different cars as you can........but remember, GTR's and teenagers dont mix!

Well by the looks of it upgrading to a GTR seems the way but how do they compair to the GTiR's. I have been in 1 or them and boy do they fly!

The 1 thing i dont really like about the GTiR's tho is the looks. Not as sexy as the skylines IMO

Which car have you driven? The GTiR or GTR? If you have only been in a GTiR then you are in for a shock when you get in the Skyline. The GTiR is a good car, out of the box putting a WRX to waste, but the GTR is another step again.

What you have to decide is what sort of car you are after. What is your driving style? The Pulsar is a constant 4WD that is compact and is more suited against the WRX/EVO/Silvia group. They are goodfor the tighter twisty stuff. The GTR is a larger, heavier car that for the most handles like a RWD. It is usually competing against the Supra/HSV mob. The car isn't fantastic for tight stuff but let it loose on the open corners and straights and it won't be touched.

It also boils down to the style of car you like as well. Whether is be 2/4 door, saloon/coupe/hatch and engine size. I would suggest you spend some time thinking about what turns you on and watch some of these cars in action on some of the DVD's that are available.

Hope that helps.

I was in a GTiR sorry.

The cars i have been driving on my L's(vic) so far is a Porsche 928 S4 which pumps out about 250kw or 150kw per tone and a 300zx TT which is about 130kw per tone.

So im very used to driving 'big' cars so maybe the GTR would better suit me. Only time will tell i guess.

Thanks heaps for the advice tho.

Another question:

I have this wacked antena sticking out from the frount of my gts-t and i have no clue what it is for.

Heres some pics:

The switch to retract it:

Is this aftermarket because it seems to be fixed nicely into the bodywork and comes with a switch, but i havnt seen any other gts-t's with it...

i agree with pentae..

have u looked at insurance? GTR + 17yr old = lots of $$$

I plan to get the insurance under my dads name and me as a secondary driver. If not then im ***ed!

If i was to get a GTR it wouldnt be anytime soon as i would still have to save up another 8k anyway becuse i dont think ill get more then 12k for my stock gts-t.

insurance goes on the youngest driver anyway, so u will still get raped for insurance. stick with a gtst, they are heaps of fun. i want a gtr badly, but i want to be able to respect it. so ill stick with my gtst for now. your first car is a thrasher, a thing to get booked in, flog the crap out of it and blow shit up. your next car should be slightly better, u'll have more respect for it....im up to my 4th car now.

dont get a gtr until u've driven your gtst and got a feel for it, modded it and got used to the power... if you do some mods to it and it feels really quick and you enjoy it, then do just that. mods to a gtr cost nearly twice as much as the rb20, and anyone that tells you the rb20 doesnt go hard is wacking themselves. they can go just as hard as everything else.

you may find you dont like the skyline chassis or interior, or exterior fo that matter, you may not like the smoothness of the rb and would prefer a snappy sr20. just stick it out with ur gtst for a bit....when u get it that is.

cheers

Linton

That is a parking antenna to show you where the front of your car is when parking. It is a factory option. Stick with the GTST $5000-$8000 worth of exterior and engine mods will have it just the way you want it.

17 year olds have no business being in gtr's or anything remotely as powerful. take your time learn to drive in something that is less lethal and in a few years get a gtr if you still feel the urge. Better that than fifteen seconds of fame (infamy?)on the six o'clock news.

I plan to get the insurance under my dads name and me as a secondary driver. If not then im ***ed!

Well then ur f####d because you cant do that with imports, you should probably look into how much insurance is going to cost you before you get the car. If you have no rating (rating 6) you'll be looking at $3000 for a r32 gtst i'd say. Have a look at just cars website and do an online quote....

Get the gtst, you dont want to kill yourself, and the odds of that happening if you get the gtr are a lot higher than if ur driving a gtst.

im on my 5th lol

id love a gtr but at the moment the gtst is keeping me happy

insurance wasnt cheap even for the gtst 3300 through just cars for 21yr old but that was with 0% No Claim Bonus

3rd party was only 550 so there is a huge difference if the insurance company has to pay your car out should you crash it.

throw a few thousand in on mods and youll have to tame it anyway should give lots of fun

yep - for age and driver experience, the GTS-T will keep you more than happy...

Get your foot in the door with imported insurance with a GTS-T, then see how you go insuring a GTR...

If the car is for road driving, IMO its not worth the extra cash a 17 YO has to fork out regarding the performance gain (and what you can legally use)

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
