evo / gsr ???

Guest Emperor

Hello Japan Members

I was wondering if any of you guys could give me some info on the differences between a evo and a gsr. Im currently on the market for a evo3, as the skyline isnt my style anymore.

I live in australia (hehe yes i know my location is in japan, i watch too much initial d :)) now i find it oh so hard to find any evo's as such all are the gsr model. Im going to go have alook at one this weekend, it is a 1994 Mitsubishi Lancer GSR S2.

Now before i go look at it, could someone give me some info of what would be needed to change it into a evo. From what i have found, the engine will need to be change to the 2L which i can get from a VR4, they do not have LSD so i will need both front and rear LSD, and im guessing the inside doesnt have all the fancy stuff like racing seats, and theres no bodykit. ohh and lastly the brakes im guessing are smaller/crapper. Is this about it?

Thanks Emperor

p.s i love the red style its very nice :(

ohh yeah would it be more worth while to save some cash and just wait and import a evo6+ from japan?

... and heres me thinking you're on crack because every Evo is either a GSR or an RS.... (or Evo VII GT-A or Evo IX GT)

Yes, what you said is basically correct as far as the Evo II is concerned, the engine being #1 and the bonnet/front fenders and other body kit parts being #2. Then the Recaro (?) interior I guess. But all that effort goes to waste when you see another guy whos done exactly the same thing previously go "nice fake Evo"...

I'd say wait and import an Evo V or VI if I were you.

Btw, wheres Irohazka? That spelling isn't Japanese, sounds more like Russian?

Wait until compliance is available on the EVO VII + EVO VIII. Much more car for the money, no dicking around with engine swaps, body work, diff changes, interior changes etc. These will be worth roughly $45k fully complied, on the road. Also don't foget that these are 2000+ model cars compared to a 1995 GSR, which you will spend $20000 purchasing + $15000 at least in modifications and you are still only have a tarted up GSR.

only evo 6 and up is elegible for import and im only aware of actual complaince plates being avaliable for the 7 at the moment .

there are a few earlier ones around domestically if you search hard . check the evo forums . they are all personal imports or rebirths under a loop hole in the vic road laws that existed a few years back , basically you got a domestic lancer gsr wreck , replaced it with an evo and the vic DOT gave you new chassie numbers and rego .

also popular is taking domestic gsr and replacing it with evo III running gear , engine , everything . its ok , except the real evos have different strengthened chassies and a few other things that cant be replicated and for collector value , well its a gsr with evo gear , its not a real evo .

45k for an evo7 imported it your up for it or keep searching for an earlier one , they do come up eventually

  • 2 weeks later...

If you like i acan email a PDF about the evo 1 through to 3 giving you all details and how to tell a genuine and not a copy! Just remember to check with your insurance comany if they will insure, my brother almost bought a genuine evo 3 until we found out it was registered illegaly as an aussie model and couldnt be insured! He couldnt find any others so he settled on an evo2 to replace his aus GSR.

    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
    • Well the articals keep saying a Q50s (Skyline in Japan) with a new Manual gearbox. I like the talk about the new looks with the round tail lights. I hope they bring back the retro look like they did with the Z
