Hi There,

I recently put new brake pads in, EBC green stuff.

occasionally when coming to a stop (from high or low speeds) they screech really really loud, ear piercing.....

I have attached a pic of my brake pads and it just doesn't look right, should the shim only cover half the pad???

Thanks for your help

Cheers

Rob

If I take everything appart, from the brake pad, there is:

-> The brake pad

-> 1st shim that attach's it self to the second shim (which clips onto the pad.

-> then the silver shim which only covers half the pad..

Is that right?

Cheers

Looks like mine, so should be ok... 3 suggestions ->

1. Shouldn't happen with new pads, but the two prongs (seen at the bottom of your picture) are wear indicators and make noise when the pad has worn down enough for them to contact the rotor. If that's the case, you need to bend them back a bit or get new pads.

2. Pull the pads/shims apart, wipe them clean of dust/grime/etc and spray on some "Anti Squeak" before re-assembly. The anti squeak needs to dry before assembly.

3. My pads/shims have ONE ONLY little clip each, that goes over the corner (top left or top right of the photo) of the whole thing. They have a little hole to match the existing holes that you see. Looks like these hold the 3 pieces of the pad from moving against each other, but are so small and flimsy that I doubt that's what they're for. As I can't see these, maybe you have to have them.

Hope this helps.

Thanks heaps for your reply MarkZ.

Unfortunately the thing is:

1) Pads are about 4 months old (heaps of pad leaft and prongs aren't touching as I bent them back)

2) I stuck all the shims together with this silicon orange goo stuff

3) Yeah I know the clips you are talking about (see attached pic) have them on as well.

Even after all that they still bloody squeek.....

Any other suggestions?

Thansk for your help

Rob

Hi Robo,

just picked up my GTS-t and have the same squeeking problem... and the car has new brake pads and the discs are fine. I was told it because of the compound in the brake pads... I'm getting softer pads put in... they'll wear quicker but if they get rid ot the sound who cares... my dad worked for a car parts place and apparently many years ago now they changed the compound they use in brake pads these days so that the pads don't wear as quickly but I guess there's downsides to it!

Getting the car on the w/e so will test out the brakes and let you know!

Too quick

Okay i had the same drama (sound familiar to all the other replies) lol

I thought that it was the EBC green stuff on the front of my car.

but alas it was the EBC black stuff street kevlar its called on the right side rear that was making all the racket.

got it checked. disc machined/skimmed a second time and then refitted, tested, still squeaked. took em out checked everything in with the anti squeal. still squeaked.

took the pads out and put in Bendix standard rears or something poor and non kevlar and walla no squeak.

What the... i agree.

Apparently there isnt really enough weight in the rear of the R33 to make the rears work hard enuff or some crap like that. We apparently also share the same rears as a WRX. so there ya go. I have taken my car to Brakeswest in Myaree, they are nice guys and took time to check and test and test and test and test until the came up with some sort of solution.

who knows there is no noise now so I am happy, though i really wanted kevlar on the back. bugga

!!

Your Brake shims have been cut.

Mine cover the whole brake pad both of them

The first shim isn't a solid shim as the middle is slotted.

The second shim is a full solid shim which has the pistion marks on it. They cover from top to bottom side to side of the brake pad.

    • So, this shouldn't be such a mission, but there were a few tricks so I thought I'd post up a DIY for it. This was on a Q50 Red Sport but I doubt any other V37 model is very different (maybe just less steps for the intake heat exchanger hoses) I pulled the radiator out to flush it because the car was running hot at the track, but obviously the same steps apply for changing a radiator for any reason including an upgrade. If you are removing the radiator, you of course need to drain and refill, so have 5+ litres of blue coolant ready. You don't need to drain the intake heat exchanger to remove the radiator but depending on your plans you may need a couple of litres for that as well. You will also need something to deal with the auto transmission lines, I used 2x 8mm rubber caps on the radiator side, and a short length of 8mm pipe on the car side.....unless you can block these lines quickly you will loose AT fluid and it may be enough to hurt the transmission if you don't refill it. Other than that....lets go... "First, jack up your car". Yes really, and put it safely on stands. If you are not confident doing that you need to give this job to a mechanic

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
