$100 to fill a 10lb bottle. How many runs you get out of it depends on the size shot you use. Longevity? How's 18 months on the bottle and near 80 passes @ WSID and 50 laps of E.C.Raceway sound with NO DRAMAS!?!?!?!?

Don't talk about longevity... hahahaha....

Sorry make that "80+++ passes at WSID, 50+++ laps at ECR all on the bottle as well as a few hours on the dyno over time AND the regular racing and street driving off the bottle.

Driven this cars arse off for near 3 years with no ill effects.

Ssshhhh....!!!!

I aggree but the long term longivity of your motor seems that it is going to be short lived. It seems by spending money is to save money build it once and do it right.
Correct me if im wrong 2rismo but your car is making approx 270rwkw on std turbo with nos?

With a proper tune that's hardly damaging the engine (or no worse than whacking an aftermarket turbo on and getting a similar power level...). Not to mention it would have been cheaper and easier to tune no doubt.

This is an example of ongoing costs what is it around $100 to refill

Every motor has a power limit and an rpm limit.

The amount of nitrous suggested by 2rismo + his existing base power without gas is arguably within the power limit of the RB25det engine components. Therefore the longevity is not in question if the comarison is made bewteen a turbo upgrade of the same total power. The rpms required by the nitrous shot are typically lower and the intake charge temps are lower giving another advantage to a nitrous system in terms of wear.

The ongoing costs are hardly an issue for someone who wants to race a car.As they say.." if you want to save your pennys go and buy yourself a moped". Tyres and fuel alone cost enough to turn some people off. Not to mention the clutches, gearboxes and diffs.

I actually believe 2rismo may crack a 10.99 second pass with the larger shot he is now runing (although he doubted me last time I said this) since the torque difference over his last setup should be massive. Of course that my call not his.

10lbs of gas lasts longer than you think . When you actually own a car with a kit on it you keep feeling it's such great value for money every time you flick the switch :) Just ask anyone who has had a well setup kit on thier car and I'm sure they will tell you the same.

This thread is all about learning. So I hope we can add some info to your as yet incomplete understanding of nitrous use for performance.

I did doubt you, didn't i ?? ;):P;)

I run 1 heat range colder (an 8) with my usual 0.8mm plug gap and they work great.

It sounds as if you are going to big on a standard motor why don't you just spend some more money on a proper build instead of NOS

GTSTBOY ;)

Re this post;

Building a motor wouldn't give me any more power than I have now without the gas. As I'm not hurting the car now, why 'build it'?

The car makes about 200rwkw without the gas as the above-mentioned boost levels and about 260rwkw with the gas.

Two different DD dynos recorded 258.8kw and 259.1kw respectively in Shootout Mode. I expect more like 300kw with the new jetting but lots more torque. Can't remember the tractive effort figures off the top of my head though.... Does 1420ft sound right?

For the 60 rwkw increase (as in 2rismo's case) how long does a 10lb bottle last? Number of passes or engine time, whatever?

Around here the going rate for 10lb bottle refill is $55 inc GST, what's it cost over there?

I usually get about 14 passes before the performance suffers. This is due primarily because the bottle pressure drops significantly when it runs low and until recently, I didn't have the recommended bottle warmer fitted. These warmers maintain a constant temperature (and therefore pressure) using a thermostat and are a very simple electrical prospect.

16-18 passes down the quarter mile from full to empty on my bottle seems about right. When it's only (mainly) used in quarter mile applications it's a great value for money prospect involving little or no compromise in how the car drives daily.

Adrian

Some one asked about plugs?

Usually you run a colder plug and go for one with a decent size grounding strap, the NGK copper plugs all seem to be ok. That means no iridium/platinum or any self cleaning style plugs. The BCP 7's I found to be quite ok.

Thanks Adrian, what's a 10lb refill cost?

    • Impossible to remove the housing while turbo is installed on the manifold on the engine. So I have to do it anyways. I plugged it so there will not be any debris in there. Will vacuum aswell
    • would a r34 gtr hood line up with gt/gtt stock fenders? after latch, front bumper and hinges are swapped for gtr ones? or would the fenders be too low or high in relation to the hood surface? ( I believe seeing somewhere that gtr front fenders use some type of riser for the sides, but do not know how that relates to stock gt/gtt fenders.)
    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
