Josh after being defected im doing research, i bought the light vehicle modifacation code of practice and have a complete copy of all ADR's, u have to get them approved by an engineer, samples have to be made infront of an examiner blah blah blah MISH!! good bye blackies carbon bonnet ;)

unless, im on the phone to qld transport as im writing this, trying to get ahold of engineers that approve fiberglass and carbon fiber so ill let u know how i go.

carbon fibre and fiberglass dont meet the "crumple zone" requirements, been through this with the fiberglass bonnets.........and well no intrusion bars..dont get me started ;) I dunno what the fine is, I doubt its large. However, if your in an accident and you kill your passenger, dont expect them to go lightly on you if you knew.

my problem is, its illegal to cut the ribbing on the standard bonnet, but the standard bonnet wont fit over my engine ;) dilema... my engineer said as long as when u modify the bonnet u make it just as strong as it was before its fine...

ive been on hold for 20 mins now, to hang up or not too hang up

sif you dont already know the answer...it will be either 1) hmmmm I actually dont know the answer to that, so what I suggest you do is take it to a mechanic get it approved then bring it here to an inspection station. Then you'll probably get fined anyway! But hey, thats how our system works.

OR 2) You have to be joking, you want to modify your car?? Dont make me laugh, you know the police are going to fine you for any modification regardless of its legality, its up to you to fight it in court if you want to get off!

I wouldnt even bother...

your in trouble....but if you make the standard bonnet just as strong its hard to see where the problem lies. With fiberglass and carbon fiber the problem was they "shatter" instead of "crumple" and this can also cause fragments to hit ppl or some crap etc etc..

Even though that all true, why not argue the point of complete fiberglass car shell’s eg: kit cars. I’d think a shell is worse off then a bonnet/boot/doors ect in a crash.

What I wana know is, how the new M3 CSL? Was approved with its Carbon/Kevlar roof.

ok, just got off the phone to the engineer, he is more than happy to approve it if i first apply with qld transport to have the bonnet and they answer yes, there is no reason y they shouldnt for the reasons you just stated josh so im going to download the form now and take it in and see how i go.

With the carbon Kevlar, the Kevlar is used to hold it together in an accident. Same as how they are putting the requirement that all carbon parts have an outer skin of kevlar requirement into racing to stop carbon jards getting stuck into other racers tyres.

I heard Custom Carbon were getting bonnets etc ADR tested, maybe its worth giving them a call and having a chat.

are you building a bat mobile josh?

manufacturer cars are subjected to all sorts of crash and other procedures that costs tens of thousands of dollars, they destroy sample cars, impact / destroy each item from multiple angles etc. Its a lot more complex that simply joe bloggs making one and it getting approved.

Depending on the car, I believe you can get aluminium ones from japan for bickies

S13's are around 1200kg. I would like to get one with Rb converion down to around 1100kg relisctly.. I would aboviulsy like it less though.

When I weighed the twin turbo S13, it was close enough to R32 GTR weight.. So I think I’ll have my work cut out for me.

as out line in the light vehicle modifactions code of practice, fiberglass panels only havae to go through some rigidity tests to pass. This is only for low volume and custom built cars, s13 being a low volume import comes into that catogory meaning it does not have to meet the ADR's. You cant argue i have my book i bought from the government today for 90 bucks, money hungry **** bags!

im willing to bet money that you'd still get fined for it....what the governement and rta state/write can and is different to what the police enforce and then once again thats different to how the courts interpret it...you can still be fined even if it states you cant. Think its stupid? Join the que!

Think about modification plates....if you have a mod that's mod plated, do you honestly think you cant be fined for having it? If you do your joking yourself. Police can basicly fine you for anything they want, then you have to clear it. The systems a joke.

I don't know the details but I'm with 33NIZ on this... Do what you like to get it "approved" but the cops will still defect you and leave you to deal with it simply to "get hoons off the streets"...

If you're like me you just do what you want and deal with the consequences if / when it happens...

    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
