Before any1 gets upset, I have searched here, and on SDU, and haven't found the info I'm after...

I have recently put some RaceBrakes RB74 pads in the front. The squeel like nothing I've ever heared before once they have warmed up!!!!

Below is what precautions I took to ensure they dont squeel much, and also things I didnt do...

I transfered the shims from the old pads over....

I put some of the pbr glue for brakes on both sides of all shims, and on the pistons of the outer half of the caliper. Unfortunately the pistons on the inner half missed out b/c I couldn't get to them...

I was told to bed the brake pads in by doing 5 - 8, firm 100 to 60km/h stops to begin with... but I put them in on a Sunday night, as the old ones were wearing thin, and I didnt have any time to do this until a week later....

So my question is.. is there anything I missed, or anything I can do now, to stop this horrid noise from haunting me??? I'm too embarassed to press the brakes sometimes, as the noise is ear piercing.....

yer i get that high pitched squeel aswell. i asked my uncle (whos a mechanic) how to fix the problem when i had my last car and im pretty sure he said there was something u could buy which you apply to your brakes the problems solved instantly. sorry i cant remember what the stuffs called, but im sure i;ll be chasing it up soon.

anyway, id phone a local auto store and ask if they sell any products that fix the problem.

Yeah, that is the brake adhesive I said that I put on... although I didnt out it everywhere...

Below is a pic, detailing the surfaces I cleaned, and put the brake adhesive (anti squeel onto). For the outer brake pad, I did every surface. For the inner brake pad I did every surface EXCEPT for the pistons. Will this make a difference? If it did, then I dont think if would squeel this loud, as the surface the pistons touch, did have brake adhesive applied onto them...

Does any1 believe it is b/c I didnt bed the pads in like I was told to???

I had the squeeeeeling,

this was after i got the pads changed to ebc street kevlar

then i went back to the brake joint, cos it was making too much noise. this is rear right by the way and then they changed it to hopeless bendix pads in the rear and the squeeling has stopped alot, though now it is very very barely noticable, can hardly be heard

dogs hate me though, haha

apparently it was something to do with the brake material and not enuff rear weight in the vehicle. i gotta go bck though cos i like the ebc's better, and oh yeah the discs have been machined twice in the back.

good luck, but i would really check the pad compound

I run RB74s on the front too, and yeah, the squeals are ear shriekingly loud sometimes :) I don't mind too much though, theres always a trade off when choosing pads.

How do you find them in other respects? I like them a lot over the Ultimates they replaced.

Braking power is excelent, but the noise I can live without!

Did you bed them in as soon as you installed them? I was told to do 5 - 8 HARD stops from 100-60 to bed them in, otherwise they develop some sort of glaze...????

I didnt do this until 1 week later!

Have you tried the adhesive as well???

How long have you had them in??

Sorry about the bombardment of questions, but they are really starting to annoy me....

For the money RB74 are at, you can't complain much. Noise is the draw back of having a pad like that. If you hate the noise, stay away from racebrakes Comp 9's. They're the best pads I've used so far.

RB74's last longer than comp 9's, but comp 9's brake that little bit better at very high speeds. I find the RB74's better than the green stuff, but it's noisy and heaps of dust. For the circuit, RB74. For street green stuff.

Endless NAM, absolute crap!

Well, it isn't that you haven't bedded them in correctly, that shows up as really poor braking performance. If you didn't do it for a few days that hyst means the resin was on there a few extra days on top of the months it was in the box.

Could just be that they are noisy pads - some are MUCH worse than others.

mate im gettin rb74's.  can you give me a bit of a review of them?

Sure..

They grab VERY well compared to the standard nissan items, and bendix ultimates (haven't tried anythinf else myself). So far (in the 1.5 weeks I've had them) I've noticed that they dont fade as they heat up... and they perform very well at high speeds (I managed to lock up my front wheels at 160km/h).

But the only draw back is the noise (which I cant stand)!!!!

So if you want some, you can buy mine if you like (I've had them in 1.5 weeks so far, street use only). They are virtually new, and I'll knock a fair bit off the price too!

I didn't do 5-8 hard stops but I think my usual driving style would have bedded them in well.

I haven't tried adhesive although I was thinking about it. It didn't make any difference for you so I'm not sure if I'll bother.

I've had them in since the 1st week of September and they've taken a decent amount off the rotor. I'm pretty sure these chew the disc faster than Ultimates, but that could just be me threshhold braking too much. Would have been difficult with Ultimates because they fade so much faster. :)

These pads are great at doing their job, but next time around I may try a slightly less harsh compound (on the ears and the rotors) from RaceBrakes for street use.

Remeber... I didnt put the adhesive on all surfaces, and I'm not sure I let it al dry properly....

I'm starting to think that it only happens on my drivers side, so the adhesive may have helped...

I am taking it to racebrakes monday to get my discs machined, and I will see if they can put the adhesive on for me all over.

Will let you all know if it makes any difference...

    • Welcome to my 2004 Toyota Mark ii IR-V Fortuna (series 2) With a 1JZ-GTE powerplant under the bonnet (hood) it'll give me plenty of scope for power upgrades. For those who aren't familiar with imports, the 1JZ-GTE is a 2.5L 6 cylinder VVTi engine with a single turbocharger. This has the factory R154 5 speed gearbox, along with a aftermarket 2 way LSD differential (brand unknown). Under the arches are a set of CST Zero 1 alloys, 18x9 +30 225/40 up front and 18x9.5 +15 265/35 on the rear. The car was quite low in Japan and there's evidence of the wheels catching the rolled arches/fenders. The tyre's aren't great so I'm in two minds whether to replace both or just the tyres and put up with the wider wheels on the rear. The car still uses stock brakes with the addition of some braided hoses. The exterior is stock with the exception of a BN Sports front bumper and a replacement Fortuna grill  Moving to the interior, the steering wheel has been replaced with a dished MOMO steering wheel (which will get swapped for my Momo Tuner for the time being) Defi Link Gauges are mounted above the climate controls and on the A pillar, the Oil Temp,Oil Pressure,Water Temp and Boost gauges should help with spirited and track driving  The stock seats have been replaced with some retrimmed Recaro bucket seats. Being a larger build these are a little snug, unfortunately the orange isn't for me so I'll look into replacing these down the line. Other modifications include a twin plate clutch, Blitz intercooler, Evolve alloy radiator, a stainless exhaust with decat, HKS EVC-S boost controller and coil overs
    • Apologies for the long read My R34 GTT was up for sale at the beginning of spring due to a few repairs creeping up. The strut tops needed replacing, roof and bonnet (hood) painting (yay for 3 stage pearl) and the underside stripped and treated. I sold the car which allowed me to be in a much better place financially. Leading up to the sale I was already thinking about the replacement. In an ideal world it needed to be a good all-rounder. Something I can mess around with, modify, do track days, do the school run, go on long drives etc.  Options included but not limited to... Laurel C35, Evo 8/9, Civic FD2, Impreza Hawkeye, Aristo and even an Audi S4 Avant (I've already got the Mazda 6 wagon). But there was always one car at the top of the list The Toyota Mark ii JZX110 I found an advert on a Facebook group for an example in Japan, from a seller called Jon at Rising Sun Exports. A few messages back and forth and Jon calls me from Yokohama one morning (or afternoon in his case). He briefly explained the import process, the costs involved and a repeat of the advert. After much deliberation, the price was agreed and the sale was locked in. I've never imported a vehicle so I jumped into the unknown head first. The money transfer was completed through wise.com (fees apply), very easy to use and the money was with him within a day or two.  The car suspension was raised for the vessel and the car dropped off at the port. It was 7 weeks later when the bill of lading was received and the freight invoice sent to me, followed by the export certificate a couple of days after (both digital copies) In the mean time the port had been in contact. I needed an agent to deal with the NOVA (notification of vehicle arrival) along with the tax/duty invoice, this was £75.00. The port also had a fee of £100, I'm guessing to cover the cost of the 10 day 'free storage' and for moving the car off the boat etc. They need a copy of the vehicle invoice, freight invoice and export certificate to allow the vehicle to pass through customs. The vessel arrived on Tuesday 5th August, the tax/duty invoice was generated and sent over. This is generally tax 20% and duty 10% of the vehicle value. Although the invoice came in at a higher amount than I had calculated. Once HMRC had received the payment the vehicle could be released from customs. I thought once the tax/duty was paid you could collect at any point, that's not the case. Your agent will need to book a collection slot, I requested Thursday 7th which was accepted, with a 9:00am slot allocated. It was a 5:00am start from Norfolk heading to Southampton. We eventually found the compound, upon presenting the bill of lading and some ID they released the car (they drove it out of the compound to the front ready for us to load up). The email from the port stated each slot had a 10 minute window, which seemed abit farfetched but the staff said it's not a strict rule. We were there for approx. 30-40 mins in total. A week prior to collecting I contacted my garage and explained the situation, I was able to get an inspection slot that afternoon. For the registration, DVLA require the car to be insured, for this I used a company called Adrian Flux who can insure the vehicle using the VIN number.
    • Hey guys, looking for these side skirts if anyone can help me out.
    • Wife and I are still looking for a new home. One condition was a large enough garage for a full-size lift in one bay. Now if only we could find something... We've been looking for almost a year now.
    • Thanks everyone for the ideas! Sadly, ramps are a no go for me. With young kids at home, I do most of my work late at night while they're sleeping. Starting the car multiple times wouldn't be a great idea.  I'll go see one of those new long reach low profile jacks and take a couple measurements to see if they will fit.
