hi has anyone done a 3ltr conversion using a r33 gtst head with the variable timing ive read a lot of info using a gts head without the variable timeing used . also wondering witch is a better 3ltr block to use either the australian version skyline or the vl block and does the rb25det gear box bolt straight up.

G'day - yeah I've done the conversion... You can fit the VCT head, however mine was disabled and I had GTR cams, cam gears & valvesprings fitted at the same time.

Yep - I used the Series 3 VL commo non-turbo block, make sure you get series 2 or better block if you're going to use the non-turbo block because it's already got the oil returns for the turbo etc etc, and yes, the gearbox bolts straight up :P

Cheers,

matt

If your doing the 3ltr conversion then I would recommend the RB26 head, but if your going to use the RB25 head then don't bother with the VCT, as soon as you want to do cams and cam gears it's going to go anyway.

There is a company here in Perth now that is starting to sell the 3ltr engines complete with forged internals etc, they are using both the RB26 and RB25 heads. I think sub-zero is also doing these engines?

25GTT,

Hi, It's Steve at SST in conjunction with Grant Bojornac (Per4manz) and Danny (Superalign). I'm sure they are designed to drop straight in to the gts-t. You will have to contact Steve directly as I don't want to give out his pricing info without his authority.

I will talk to him soon and try and get the pricing, at least a rough estimate.

thanks, im just getting as much info as i can coz i wanna do most of it myself and i wanna do it bit by bit over about a year, coz unfortunately i will be selling my line in about 3 months and buying another about the same time next year and then i wanna bolt the engine ive built in. so if anyone nos anymore specs and so on so i have a rough line to follow then it would be much appreciated thanks matlowth and gtst v spec for ur info and matlowth i was just wondering if u could give me a little more info such as what compression ur running have u had it balanced and blue printed , what stage cams are u running and so on and i would love to no ur power output thanks and gtst v- spec im gonna have to catch up wif u on the next cruise coz u seem like a champ. thanks phil

driftr33,

I'll try and find out more about what they do in the 3ltr build-up then I can give you some more detailed info. It will depend what power you want from the engine, these ones are being built for high horsepower, 700+, and therefore will run forged internals.

The engine build will be expensive but alot of cost saving can be done by doing bits yourself.

Yeah i've done it the other way around, that is a SII R33 (with VCT) on a R31 GTS II block.

I still have the VCT cams etc, but not hooked up. I've been told you can run an oil feed from the oil pressure switch to the head, drill a hole in the front(?), and block off the hole in the bottom of the head as it lines up with the water jacket.

yea i wanted to start with the vl block get everything balanced and blueprinted was gonna run a dry sump, forged pistons with the gtr head and a nice set of turbos and hook it up to a power fc, of course lots of other things aswell but take to long to list. thanks everyone for there input ... hey hotplates what type of horse power output are you getting.

thanks phil

Yeah, the engine does BOLT straight in, but there's shitloads of work required to get the thing to go once it's fitted.

Yep - no worries... The static compression I'm running is 7.8:1 (or there abouts), as mentioned, I'm running standard GTR cams (much bigger and you have to get a fair bit of work done to the head to allow clearance... Power output at the moment is around 316rwkw @ 14psi @ about 6000rpm - redline @ 7500. There's about 250rwkw from about 4500rpm. My injectors are flat knackers at the moment, so I don't think I'm going to go chasing too much more power.

Cheers,

matt

matlowth,

Yes, I wasn't implying that it is easy, but if you paying a workshop to do it then they will think about all of the issues and be prepared, when you do it yourself then you have to tackle the problems one at a time.

The compression is very low, does this mean that you loose out on power?

thanks matlowth and yea i no there will be lots of little things thats y im giving myself a year for the build. and one of my mates is an engine builder so if problems come up i have some help as well as most of my mates are mechanics plus the doing a lot of it myself is coz i enjoy playing with engines so it should be fun... im just getting as much info and as many specs as i can so i will no what bits and pieces i will have to get to put it together... thanks everyone if u could keep the info coming it would be much appreciated...

thanks phil

Heh - I didn't do it myself, I paid to have it done.... :D

Re: compression, nahh - it's better off boost than my old RB25 was. FYI - The static compression of a GTR is 8.0:1, and this has 0.4 of a litre extra capacity. With this setup, it makes more power everywhere than a stock motor, and with the low compression, it allows me to stick a fair bit of boost into it without having to worry about pinging. And as a street car that isn't going to be running C16 or VP racing fuel every day, that's the best option. Cheers,

matt

matlowth,

All sounds good to me, one day I might even build one up and drop it into an R32 GTR, it seems to becoming the engine of choice among the horsepower fanatics. Coming on boost earlier is definately a bonus, we can all do with the power sooner rather than later. Sounds like a sweet ride.

gtst -vspec - If ya can afford to spend the bikkies then it's a great option, however, be wary that all the extra torque they make is just what kills gearboxes. The guy who does the work on my car has stripped two seperate gears and the input shaft (all seperate occasions) on a hollinger gearbox because of the masses of torque it makes.

driftr33 - They're 550cc injectors (which max out at around the 320rwkw mark), and the turbo is a T78. :P

Cheers,

matt

matlowth,

Thanks for the advice, the gearbox is always going to be the weak point in a race car, don't know the best option as the Holligers are very expensive What about replacement straight cut gears for GTR box.

    • So you can then buy a more expensive, less reliable, more boring and slower replacement that's harder to work on and you have no knowledge of?
    • Will take much better photos when the time comes, I still want to do a sub 1m50s on street tyres at SMSP (just because). Then will slap on proper tyres and see if the car can get down to 1m40~45s range. If it goes sun 1m40s without aero, then wow.. but I don't expect the shit box to go that fast.
    • I have the OS Giken R3C with the GM 26 spline input shaft in my 32(Rb32 with only around 750hp atw) and its a pig to drive. Its actually very forgiving when its cold when when its warmed up, it chirps the tires even when trying to take off slowly. Mind you though, part of this has to do with my clutch master(Non-OEM) so the travel on the rod is shorter. How did you get 1130hp at 85% @e50?! Are you running a stroker? If so, I would recommend the R3C purely because it handles the abuse.
    • First time trying out a regularity format at the Peter Hall Memorial 6hr. It was an interesting experience with everyone on our team being brand new to the format. Safe to say reading and understanding the rules and scoring system would have really helped our team. We finished firmly last thanks to the majority of all laps across the team being penalties. In the words of my teammate Matt “Turns out we are both too quick and illiterate.” Another car had entered before us and already secured number 12 so i needed to clearly cross them out to avoid confusion for any other blue calsonic livery'd r32s at the event. The team consisted of an R32, an AE86, a supercharged V35, and a Kia CEED GT bought at salvage. I ensured we all had matching "Peer Pressure Racing" banners and overalls. This is the longest session of back to back hot laps the car has ever done (20mins no cool downs on a hot day).  It was a true test of the cooling /oil control mods and they certainly made big difference! Enjoy watching me lose 14 concurrent points for the team:  Unfortunately I only managed 45mins of track time over 3 sessions (20min, 20min, 5min) out of my allotted 90mins before my gearbox let go. Something related to shifter fork resulting in 3rd being neutral quickly followed by all gears neutral, then it being lock in two gears at once and unable to move. Optimistically there were no bad noises. But I am yet to pull box out and diagnose. Fortunately i was also to snag a tow home while I slapped a permit on the Kiaa which came on a trailer
