HI guys need help it looks like i have done the rings in my car at the moment i am running 16psi with all the bolt on gear what should i do? Should i just buy a new second hand engine for about $800 and change them over or rebuild the one i have which is going to be about $2500+ all depends what i put in it any help would be great or advise what i should do but i don't want this to happen 6 months down the track because i am running to much boost or power. Should i just take the hit and spend the money?

Yeh well the rb30 engine will have an extended torque curve that nice on the street. Just check if it's legal to put that in the car.

I'd probably just repair whats failed, spend as little as you need so you can get back on the road as soon as you can.

:P

i like your idea of buying a 2nd motor and pulling the shagged one out .. cheapest way to stay on the road.... if your inclinedto stay rb20 .. spendmoney on pistons .... and head work ....should be nice then

that was u that was smsing me wasnt it? bout the rb24? not going that route anymore?

Well depends a lot on your finances and your plans for the car i personally think just buying another 2 hand engine isn't the best idea you have no idea on its condition and you could be back to square one 6 months down the road. I would if the budget could cope buy gtr crank and rods(~$550 to $500) and a set of tomei 2.4litre pistons(~$1600 not sure on $) for the rb20(rb24) which then can produce more torque than a rb25 in std form because of the longer stoke. It's a bit more money but it would be strong, torquee, and new .Plus the added capacity with spool the turbo quicker and add more botoom end punch. And it would be something different to the norm. I would think a combo like this could produce 400rwhp(300rwkw) with out over extending it self (with the right surporting bolt ons).

Other than the options already listed....

Go mental on the head, cams, etc, as much as you can either afford or is posible to do with the head, get the HEAD o-ringed also. Then just keep on buying short bottom ends. Or if you buy a compleat motor, sell the head and the turbo off that. I think you will find tho, it could be your tune, the power your getting isnt THAT much, I think with a lot of head work you could get a fair wack more, and a good tune will get more and make it safer. The swap engine will also be a LOT faster than getting a new one built up.

But yeah, unlimited budget, build a fullhouse RB30DET/T.

but the RB20 head is more restrict than Rb25 head and lack of VVT,

the stock rb25 "should" able to provide better spool up time and maybe more mid range.

and it only cost 1/2 of the rb24

Maxx are you comparing apples with apples because I cant see how on earth you can build a rb25 with gtr and tomei forged piston for half the price of a rb20 and if your not then the rb20 with strengthen rods and forged pistons could take twice the beating the std second hand rb25(you are never sure how good a second rb25 is going to be) and the 100cc exact capacity wont out balance you'll gain you will get with the long stoke configuration.

ps was just giving the guy alternatives to the norm

Yer guys the bugdet is a little tight but i still don't want to take short cuts and be stuck later on with the same problem. the problem is i don't get a warrenty with the 2nd hand motor as i am running that boost they said they won't warrent andthing over standard boost boooooo! so i am going to get the engine pulled apart and find out what the problem is and i am hoping that the cylinder haven't over sized and i can just replace the rings and be done with it and not the full rebild fingers crossed

Get a wrecker engine with warranty. At the power we have if looked after they will last a long while and put up with a what soem would consider abuse...i consider it enjoyment. Just drive it around for a few thousand kms puttign afew fresh sumps of oil adn coolant thru it adn see how it goes. If its got a problem it will show when you dump the oil at 500kms and take it for a spin...just talk it through with the wrecker and be honest about what it is you will doing with the engine in the first instance

I still have a perfectly good spare bottom end, that one day if i could be bothered i may try to rebuild with some new ebarings to go with a reco head with cams. Cheap experiment to see what power they are good for given a clean sheet.

I dont think the RB20 represents good hp per dollar once you start cracking open the motor. Throw the good gear on it, but when you consider the cost of pistons, rods and cams etc, then the RB30 and RB25 head can can be bought for about the same money you can sell the RB20

Before going any further, i would consider why the engine died in the first place. I have formed the opinion that 210rwkws is nowhere near the limit of what a completely std RB20 can handle...so something must have given up the ghost...best identify that and make sure its fixed before you spend money on another engine/rebuild

    • My thinking is that if the O2 sensor is shot then your entire above described experience is pure placebo.
    • Here is the mess that I made. That filler there was successful in filling dents in that area. But in the middle area. I can feel dents. And I've gone ocer it multiple times with filler. And the filler is no longer there because i accidently sanded it away. I've chased my tail on this job but this is something else lol. So I'm gonna attempt filler one more time and if it doesn't work I'll just high fill primer the door and see where the issues are because guidecoat is of no use atm.
    • Ok, so I think I sort of figured out where I went wrong. So I definitely overthinked it, and I over sanded, which is probably a large part of the problem. to fix it, I ended up tapping some spots that were likely to be high, made them low, filled them in, and I tackled small sections at a time, and it feels a lot better.    I think what confused me as well is you have the bare metal, and some spots darker and some are lighter, and when I run my finger across it, it' would feel like it's a low spot, but I think it's just a transition in different texture from metal to body filler.    When your finger's sliding on the body filler, and crosses over to the bare metal, going back and forth, it feels like it's a low spot. So I kept putting filler there and sanding, but I think it was just a transition in texture, nothing to do with the low or high spot. But the panel's feels a lot better, and I'm just going to end up priming it, and then I'll block it after with guide coat.   Ended up wasting just about all of my filler on this damn door lol
    • -10 is plenty for running to an oil cooler. When you look at oil feeds, like power steering feeds, they're much smaller, and then just a larger hose size to move volume in less pressure. No need for -12. Even on the race cars, like Duncans, and endurance cars, most of them are all running -10 and everything works perfectly fine, temps are under control, and there's no restrictions.
    • Update: O2 sensor in my downpipe turned out to be faulty when I plugged in to the Haltech software. Was getting a "open circuit" warning. Tons of carbon buildup on it, probably from when I was running rich for a while before getting it corrected. Replaced with new unit and test drove again. The shuffle still happens, albeit far less now. I am not able to replicate it as reliably and it no longer happens at the same RPM levels as before. The only time I was able to hear it was in 5th going uphill and another time in 5th where there was no noticeable incline but applying more throttle first sped it up and then cleared it. Then once in 4th when I slightly lifted the throttle going over a bump but cleared right after. My understanding is that with the O2 sensor out, the ECU relies entirely on the MAP tune and isn't able to make its small adjustments based on the sensors reading. All in all, a big improvement, though not the silver bullet. Will try validating the actuators are set up correctly, and potentially setting up shop time to tune the boost controller on closed loop rather than the open loop it is set to now. Think if it's set up on closed loop to take the O2 reading, that should deal with these last bits. Will try to update again as I go.
