Hey guys i need ur help

I just imported a modified R32 GTS-t that has been fitted with a aftermarket ECU (GReedy E-Manage) and I was talking to a friend who said that if I use Australian Premium Unleaded in it that the lower octane fuel may cause the engine to detonate? I believe that Japanese fuel is 110 octane where as Aussie premium is only 98 octane, would this lower octane fuel be causing damage to the engine or possibly cause it to detonate? If I used octane booster in the premium would that fix the problem until i can get the car tuned propperly for Australian fuel. I also have the link cable and program to tune the E-Manage, so if any1 has any experience using this ECU, could they tell me how to ajust the ECU to run on Australian Premium.

Thanks

Let's start off with an EManage is not an ECU, it is a simple piggy back. The standard ECU still runs everything, the EManage smply bends a few signals (AFM voltage mostly) to trick the ECU into leaning off the A/F ratios. If you unplug the EManage the standard ECU will run the engine as per standard.

Japanese "Premium Unleaded" is 100 ron. It used to be a problem when we only had 95 ron (pre Optimax and Ultimate), we had to retune Jap (aftermarket tuned) cars all the time. But since we now have 98 ron it hasn't been anywhere near as much of a problem.

I doubt that your car with an EManage, piggy back, will have been tuned so tight that the difference between 98 ron and 100 ron is going to be an issue. I strongly suggest you have it checked on the dyno, the 20 minutes and $100 (tops) would be well worth it.

Hope that helps

:) cheers ;)

I thought jap fuel went upto 108?

check your timing. when I got my car from jap the timing was way out, and it was detonating. once I wound it back it ran fine on 98octane.

also you don't have to unplug the emanage, you could just clear the maps. with the sofware and cable, but I wouldnt recommend doing this unless you know waht you are doing and youd want to save the tune first..

so yeah best to get a pro to sort it out.

Normal pump fuel in Japan is : reg 90 ron and premium 100 ron .

You can get pump fuel at 105 ron but its very rare to find in servos .

Hey thanks for ur help fellas, ill get it tuned asap but until then ill use Bp Ultimate just incase. 1 last question, what does detonation actually sound like, does the engine knock before it detonates or does it just die in 1 hit?

The best way to describe it would be like draging a chain on the ground . It can be hard to hear in a noisy turbo car . Its easy to hear it on a stock none turbo car when under load in high gear , sometimes you can hear the car next to you when taking off at the lights uphill .

Nozila : From my experience they use 100 , i was using 90 ron an a hired mazda 2 and she was pinging !

r32's have a ping light. it's a red light on the lower left hand side of the speedo in the dash. it flashes about 3 times when the engine pings so if it ever see that indicator flash, it means u should back off immediately as the engine is pinging

u probably wont be able to hear knocking inside the car so it's best to just watch out for that light.

you could use that nulon pro strength octane booster if u're worried, but a simple tune up should be able to fix any probs

    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
    • You have a knack for photography my friend. It makes the 86 look like a complete bucket. The 34 went with you to Europe and back. It's special. (we all feel the same about our 'shitboxes' that every bystander seems to absolutely love)
