My cousin will be coming back to Australia to study and he is planning to bring over his rx-7 series 6. He owned it for 3 years now. For all those who had gone through the process, how much did you pay for the compliance? Do you have to use a RAWS workshop? And approximately how long will the process take? Thanks a lot!

the compliance that have been done to cars coming to melbourne has been between $1000 and $1500.

Basically you don't have to meet the strict "only stock models" compliance that you go through under SEVS, so its just a matter of things like:

changing seat belts

emissions placard

tyre placard

fuel filler restrictor

side rear view mirrors

side intrusion bars

cat converters

or other things it may need to meet ADR's. You basically need to get an Engineer to sign for your car and its up to their discretion what you need to meet ADRs, so this means your requirements will vary from state to state and from engineer to engineer. Its best to talk to one that's local to where the car will be registered, and they should be able to give you an approximate quote. Its pretty much like 15 year old import compliance, but usually even more leniant.

IF YOU'RE IN SYDNEY HELLBOY, WE CAN TAKE CARE OF THIS FOR YOU FOR BETWEEN $800 AND $1500 INCLUDING IMPORT PLATE & BLUE SLIP.

MORE ACCURATE PRICE IF YOU CAN GIVE ME MORE INFO ON THE CAR

 TECHNICALLY THE CAR HAS TO BE STOCK BUT WITH PERSONAL IMPORTS A LOT OF MODS CAN BE BYPASSED BASED ON "STATE" REGULATIONS.

TELL YOUR COUSIN TO APPLY FOR A PERSONAL IMPORT APPROVAL, THAT WAY YOU WON'T NEED AN ENGINEERS CERTIFICATE. NOT IN NSW...

WHEN WE DO THE JOB AND ARE GIVEN ALL THE DOCUMENTS FROM THE CUSTOMER, THE COMPLIANCE PROCESS TAKES 4-5 WORKING DAYS.

We can do personal imports like the series 6 for around $500 at worst if belts are ok and cat fitted, an R33 passed the other day at the pits with no cat.

Stickers are $16, filler neck $80 fitted, seat belts are same as in RX7 but if VW on tag not just V will be ok, side intrusion bars fitted, cat can be after market but the burn out quick but fitted in Japan so will be ok.

Sign off and a few other checks, in some states engineer sign off is required but call around and contact local transport section asking who is approved to certify.

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
