Rca Cable To Amp Question

Hey guys and gals!

I'm planning to run my amp in my newly-purchased R33, without a sub. (there is far less room in the boot than my previous car)

I want to run two pairs of RCA cables from the headunit, into the boot, and into the amp, then run the speakers off the amp.

My question is: Will a headunit be able to fade front/rear when running like this? I'm under the impression that RCA line outs from a headunit are a "stable line", with no modification to the signal via the headunit (bass/treble). I do know that the RCA output volume was fixed with the speaker output volume when I was running a sub in my last car. (EDIT: they both changed volume together.)

Do headunits with dual RCA outputs allow you to fade front/rear via RCA?

as far as im aware.. if it has dual rca outputs, then you will be able to fade between them..

Hi Randy

Yes you can control fade and balance from your head unit. If you have front & rear RCA outputs from your head unit, and the amp is four channel. My Alpine 9815 headunit also has RCA 5volt preouts for subwoofers, so the level of my subs can be controlled from the head unit. Hope that helps

Damo and Evil, thanks very much for the quick reply! I'm looking at a Clarion HU with the two pair of RCA outs, and I have a BOSS amp which has two pairs of RCA inputs. EDIT: That answers my question perfectly, thanks!

Just check the back of the head unit to make sure it is "front" and "rear" not "speakers" (or similar) and "sub".

randy you can squeeze a 10" sub with a small box under the parcel tray beside the battery if you want a sub and don't want to lose any boot space.

Thanks again, guys! I spoke to a guy at Strathfield car radio before posting this up, and he also said that there are "bass tubes" that I can buy and fit in there.

I kinda reserved that space for an amp though... i'll keep you posted!

For an R33, does anyone have some instruction of the best method to run two pairs (maybe 3 pairs) of RCA cable from the head unit to the boot?

Jah... since 2 years and 2 months ago when I posted this, i'm running a Kenwood mp3 headunit, with one set of RCA's under the carpet by the drivers side into a 130wrms Jaycar amp (bridged) into my old Sony sub. There was no way I could get sufficient low-end frequencies out of 6.5"s in the parcel shelf.

From the headunit, you can go round the passenger footwell, under the ECU in the kickpanel... from there, you can unclip the door-sill (plastic steppy thing that I never step on) and then unclip the carpet. Run them over the raised part that the seat rails bolt to, and then go to the back. Undo the two bolts holding the front seatbelt to the floor, and continue running it towards the rear seat. Remove rear seats (see tutorials on this, but it's easy).. from there, they can run under the seat and through an access hole that comes out on the left of your battery in the boot.

I bought my amp because it would fit nicely behind the false wall and sit next to the battery... my RCA's end there. ;o)
