A friend of mine removed his front reinforcement bar(on a 180) which is very similar to what you are proposing.

On a crash of about 30-40kph he lost he FMIC, radiator, fan and a few other fun yet expensive bits. How bout looking at a GTR reinforcement bar, my 32 had a gtr bar and was set up perfectly for what you are trying to do.

Worth a thought.

you will find that the reinforcement bar has bolts that hold it onto the car. this means that even if you cut it and was later discovered by the authorities (i dont know why they'll take your front bar of in the first place) you can find another reinforcement bar, that hasnt been cut, and replace it with that instead. theres no need to dwell on whether to cut it or not as it can be replaced if need be in the future.

I cut the bar on mine, as there was no way in hell the FMIC would fit on there without removing it.

Problem solved, end of story.

P.S. I also modded the stock Type-M Bar for more airflow by cutting the bumper.

P.P.S. Went over the pits at inspection time and they said it was fine - not illegal in WA

That's fantastic. Now what happens when another car stacks into him and is maimed as a result? Should he then replace the reo? It's amazing what people will do but don't consider their own safety.:blink:

Thanks guys I've decided to cut it up.

For reference as people asked, I have a Garrett Fmic Kit and thus the cooler fit in behind the bumper support with no cuts needed.

However, about damage in a crash; The bottom half of the bumper support which is the piece I want to cut off is actually touching the cooler so any impact whatsoever on the bumper support WILL result in damage to the cooler.

It's like this; |-|| where |- is the bumper support and || is the cooler from side view. The sharp edge on the bottom of the bumper support will literally slice right into the cooler with any movement thus my cooler will actually end up being "safer" with that piece removed. Keep in mind that as explained in my pic, I only plan to remove the bottom section of the support. The stronger, upper section will still be there and if need be in the future, I can have this reinforced.

And to answer another question someone asked, I can cut the front bar and it will fit on but as seen in my pictures, the bottom half of the bumper support will cross right throught the middle of the opening in the front bar covering half of the cooler. I've lined the bar up at home and had a look. It looks terrible.

And if I ever need it replaced, I'll just buy a new one because as mentioned by someone else, it is bolted on to the chasis.

Thanks all for your feedback and discussions. It was very worthwhile to me and I now understand the risk I am taking. I'll get some pics up when the bar is fitted.

    • Will have a look at that. I cant see any leaks
    • Put another overflow bottle (ie, a 1.25 coke bottle or similar) under the overflow hose and see if it is being pushed out there or if it is disappearing into the engine.
    • Staring on a stand is no issue. You just have to wire everything up, give it fuel and cross your fingers that the stand is robust enough. Arranging the inlet plumbing is often the hardest part, without any surrounding structure to hand some of it from. No need for coolant if you only want to run it for <1 minute. As to the gearbox - I think the little Aisin box is a bit stronger than the other small Nissan boxes that went behind SRs, but I wouldn't be too keen to test its limits with the torque of a boosted 25. I don't know if you can retain the box and the tailshaft. The box won't connect to the RB without an adapter of some sort, which is either a plate that will push the engine forward (which is not good for fitting it into the bay's available space) or push the box back, which messes with the box position and tailshaft length - OR - cut and shut work on the bellhousing, which is a long way from "least modification". I'd be buying a new 370Z 6 speed or similar, doing what has to be done to that to make it fit RB (ie, cut and shut bellhousing) and the requisite tailshaft custom/mods.
    • Hi Everyone I am from West Pennant Hills in NSW. Been too busy until recently to attend to my RB25DET Series 2 engine until recently. I am planning to stick it into the S15 shell at this stage, unless a nice SR20DET turns up... For now, i am going to try and get the RB25 running and working well then decide what gearbox to use. My preference is to retain the SR20DET  6 speed gearbox and tail shaft to retain as much and least modifications as i can avoid. I am an old guy and won't be doing any heavy drifting so i don't need a bullet proof gearbox Does anyone have experience with starting the RB on a stand? I got everything setup as much as I can with the info i can find... endless searching and videos on Youtube I would be great to get some pointers Cheers Songo
    • Hey all, Recently have had my s1 r33 gtr serviced and noticed my coolant reservoir was topped up to the max line. Took the car out for 1 yesterday and noticed today the reservoir is completely empty.  Any ideas? Radiator is full
