I'm looking at a turbo upgrade in the next week or so. I've heard good things about the HKS GT2530 and the Garrett GT28RS. I know the GT2530 is

pretty much a direct bolt on to the RB20.

I need to know how hard it is to get the GT28RS onto the RB20. What work is involved to do this??

Also.... will there be much difference between the two turbos? There's a significant diference in price and i need to know if i can justify spending the extra to get the HKS Turbo??'

Very similar cartridge , same turbine . 2530 uses 60.1mm 63 trim compressor where the GT28RS is 62 trim compressor with a bit more tip height . It is a later evolution of the 2530 .

Turbine housings , 2530 uses RB20/25 specific .64 ARR T3 flanged housing . GT28RS uses a generic type T25/28 flanged housing in .86 ARR .

What you really need is the .86 housing with the T3 flange , an option thats not available .

The GT28RS is the better turbo but its T25/28 flange will require an adapter to fit it to your manifold . The generic T28 turbine outlet is very similar to SR20 T28's so a decent aftermarket split dump pipe may get the job done . From memory one of the stud holes is in a very slightly different position , nothing a little die grinding can't fix . Alternatively a second hand 2530 housing will make it bolt on but the 28RS really does need the .86 ARR to work properly .

Racespec can you show the ID tag of that turbo as the HKS GT2535 has an unusial 69mm compressor wheel .

Also the RB25 or VG30 BB housing is worth a go as the .86 GT28 housing is a high flowing item .

What sort of work is required to adapt T28 to the T3 exhaust flange? There is not a large variation between the two.

Also have you seen the SR20 dumps successfully fitted to a Garrett?

USing some 20mm adaptors do the trick

SR20 dumps fit no worries to the garrett turbos

Race Spec I was looking for the cartridge number which from another string is

446179-19 or maybe 446179-0019 . Was the one in the pics a Garrett marketed turbo or a HKS ? Also that one looks to have the Nissan/Garrett style compressor cover rather than the Garrett T3 barb style shown in HKS catalogs .

From my list the cartridge no 446179-0032 uses the NS111 turbine in a .86 ARR GT28 turbine housing . Its compressor is a 71.1mm 56 trim GT35 in a .60 ARR comp cover . In short its been called the 56 trim GT2871R and goes under turbo assembly no 743347-0002 .

Garrett also do a very similar thing but with a 48 trim compressor under cartridge no 446179-0031 and assembly no 743347-0001 .

The HKS GT-RS fits in between with its 52 trim compressor and same turbine , it generally uses a .64ARR turbine housing in T28 flange or HKS's T3 flanged housing with outlet to suit the RB20/25 . If anyone has a GT-RS handy I'd like to know its ID tag numbers as well for future reference .

That is quite true, biggest difference between the GT2871R and SB8031/SB8032 is the compressor cover aswell

the HKS GT-RS has identical specs to the 707160-10 from GARRETT

That Turbo assembly no 707160-10 or -0010 on my list shows the CHRA or cartridge no as 446179-0067 .

I also found the GT2535 cartridge no 446179-0019 , its assembly no is 472560-0005 (.64ARR) and -0006 (.86AAR) .

There are six turbos in this group , aplications are all HKS . They are in the GT2560BB section .

We have options now of the RB engine in GT28rs and GT2871R using a new Garrett turbo and machining a Nissan housing to retain the flange and dump pattern. These turbos are a new initiative and designed for the guy that doesn't want to rotate the earth and make 300 at the wheels. They make a good early spooling bolt on option for RB20 and 25. I would probably sway towards a GT2871 RB exhaust housing unit for a RB25.

    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
    • It is the stock air box with the panel filter. Everything else is stock except the exhaust at this point, as I also went back to the cleaned 270cc injectors. I will check the RPM when the IACV is unplugged and report back.
    • As MBS suggested if this is happening when the engine is cold you're going to want to remove the intake air regulator and verify resistance + that the shutter is physically opening and closing. At -20C should be fully open, 20C half open, over 60C fully closed. At 20C should be 70-80 ohms. For AAC valve testing using a Consult cable see if you can raise and lower the idle by commanding more or less AAC duty cycle. Hopefully it's pretty linear as well, shouldn't be like 30% AAC valve is barely idling and 40% is 1500 rpm.

    • Not sure yet.  Was considering speedtek because it was rated to 800hp, but when I did some research about him I don't think I will go for that🤣 So maybe giken gear set, but I'm afraid it won't be strong enough🙄
