I don't hate jeeps, i used to drive a rav4 3 door. But a point some pple are trying to make is. Yes it is safer, but at the inconsideration of others.

SOME (not many, just a few i've noticed) big 4wd drivers think that since their car is bigger, they have the bloody right of way. And the fact that they think so is already a big mistake. It means they have no bloody due care for other pple's safety. These are the pple whom should have their bloody liscense revoked for life.

Another issue is, you know how sometimes pple are not as inclined to driving as others? But they still have a liscense? Yes. They purchase these tanks with the idea that if they hit someone, at least they're safe. What is the point in that? Can't they just buy something smaller so that they can handle it better? And with that, if they hit someone, there won't be as much damage?

I agree on the fact that they are safe. But only to themselves. Imagine a kid who runs out onto the road with an oncomming vehicle. If it were a jeep with a bull bar, and it jam brakes, the stopping distance is further no doubt, thus the speed the jeep hits the kid would be realitvely high, with the addition of a bull bar FOR DECORATIVE PURPOSES, won't help either. Hitting ABS plastic with more surface area is much better than hitting a solid metal bar. Imagine the car as a skyline, better brakes, lower CG, due to performance, better tyres. Brakes in time, or just almost in time, speed to hit the kid is not as bad, and it's low. Broken leg maybe? Where else the jeep is high, ruptured spleen, internal bleeding, internal injuries... death.

Now, imagine that IS YOUR KID. Would u rather have ur kid dead or having a broken leg? Jeeps are made for the offroad and country side, it should be kept that way.

Cheers.

4WD'S ARE NOT SAFE! I Don't know how people have these thoughts! In America (where SUV's make up one third of all cars on the road) The number one cause of fatalities on the road is "SUV Rollover". Either from being T-boned or losing control of the vehicle.

Dsturbd - Put into terms of your family, If they get T-boned they are more likely to be injured as chances are this will flip the car. And having only the side of your car crushed is better than having the roof caved in also!

If you want your family safe I agree that the bigger the car the safer it is. But it needs to have a decent center of gravity. 4WD's sit to high and once they get out sideways they flip over. Now If your wife was in a big maxima, camry or even falcadore with side airbags they would stand the most chance of avoiding injury.

As for the pedestrian argument. I think if you hit a small child in either a car or a 4WD they are pretty much gone because even with a car it takes their legs out and their head smashes on the bonnet. The argument is that 4WD's kill more children because of poor visability in low speed accidents (carparks/driveways/etc.)

If you hit someone at 90km/h they dead no matter what you're driving.

My point is that the skyline would be able to brake in time, thus not as great an impact if it does. Where else the jeep wouldn't. And because of that, if there is a hit, the kid would sustain fractures and nothing too serious. Where else the tank would just give it to the kid and the kid wouldn't survive. This is based on 60km/hr with almost ample stoping time for a car. I know if it's 90km/hr. No one would survive that.

Well. I don't know about you people. But when it says 60. I'm definitely at 60. No more. No less. Unless when approaching a red light that is. But even so. I would think a skyline goin at 70 would be able to shed more speed than say, and landcruizer with off road tyres at 60. :(

Show me the hard core facts where all 4wds roll in side on impact ?

See that ef , el falcon hit semi n freeway , how would of that come of if it hit ya charade ? ;)

I seen it on a documentary on discovery channel. While they were interviewing someone on the side of the road they heard tyres skidding and panned the camera around and seen a 4WD laying on its roof from being t-boned. Do the math - high centre of gravity - Rolls over easier. 4WD manufacturers even have instructional videos etc about how people should avoid accidents in 4WD instead of swerving suddenly. Like ur gunna follow their instructions with ur reflexes anyway.

Dsturbd: Besides u got an xtrail. Not like thats a massive 4WD anyway. Altho I think small 4WD's are ugly I have not many problems with them. I'd drive a Forester GT if someone offered it to me. The problem is with the Prados, Landcruisers, Discovery's, Pathfinders, X5's, F series Fords, Territories (especially 2WD ones coz they are designed to never go off road), etc.

Stop getting all defensive, I've driven a Xtrail and altho being appauled by the handling and performance I must admit it was much like driving a sedan as far as visibility and ease of parking. I think your wife would be safer in a large sedan but thats up to u. My misses drives a 2003 corolla with dual airbags and im happy with that. I drive a charade so if i smash into anything at 60 unless its i hyundai im in trouble. If we have kids ill get her something bigger or safer (- like a german car).

How do i get a large sedan into the bush or onto the beach :D

As for the t bone thing , was a crash on coal feilds hwy few weeks back a excell t boned a old 720 4wd , 720 driver walked away n excell front passengers care flight to perth . 4wd no roll over :O

Im not defensive , I just like fishing ;)

I personally like the forester too. This is the kinda cars pple should be drivin!! :D 4WD with the comforts of a normal sedan, and the option to go onto the beach when needed. I used to drive the 3 door rav4 02 model. Not that huge a vehicle. I kinda liked it for it's very car feel, rather than a jeep. And i liked the looks of it too ;). That's one of the small 4wd's what i think are... err... pretty?

I agree with the last point. A german car BMW, and Merc. Or a sweedish car. Volvo. Personally. Volvo would be more for saftey IMO. Esp the older Volvos. Did the person who created volvos build tanks previously?

Merc and BMW for style and comfort and also saftey.

Almost or the whole range of subaru now offers 4wd right? I think. Like the legacy GT. =) There you go! But your X-trail is fine dude. ;)

Actually, i can think of 1 vehicle that won't roll over that easily. The hummer. The bloody body is so wide, the cg is much lower... but hey.. you're talkin about the bugatti of cars for jeeps. :D Thou it still costs only a fraction of what the bugatti veyron is priced at.

    • I thought that might be the case, thats what I'll start saving for. Thanks for the info
    • Ps i found the below forum and it seems to be the same scenario Im dealing with. Going to check my ECU coolant temp wire tomorrow    From NICOclub forum: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Thu Apr 11, 2013 7:23 am I am completely lost on this. Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
