in every car i've bled the brakes on we always go to the floor. never had a problem with any of their master cylinders being damaged by doing this.

Same here. Thats said, i had tpo replace mine a few years ago, mind you it was abotu 10yr old at the time, but i fear mine has once again given up the ghost after a track day earlier this year where despite my best efforts i can tget the feel back in th epedal that it once had :)

What the reasoning behind not goign all the way to the floor?

i think the reasoning is that you shouldn't extend the piston all the way to the end of the cylinder as the bits of crap in there end up right at the end and scuff/score the piston and possibly the bore.

i heard that to that it runs the bore dry and scores it

as normally you wouldnt it the floor on the brakes as apart of normall operation or even track duty

so i guess the reason is if you dont normally hit the floor why do it when bleeding

sorry for such a newbie question

but do you guys use dot 3 or dot 4 or dot 5 (is there such a thing?)? or is there no significant difference?

fair enough asking what other people use, but did you even read anything in this thread before you asked that DOT rating question?! blackrb20silvia posted up possibly the largest post of all time detailing the diffences between the DOT ratings!

thats interesting as ive always ignorantly gone to the floor to get the maximum flow from one pedal push :P hope i havent damaged anything.  Whats your opinion on this SK??

There is some logic in the thinking that the pedal (in a car that is a few years old) has most likely never been "to the floor". So it may have bad shit in that part of the travel that has never been used. My thinking is that it is best to find out safely in my garage while bleeding, than out on the track (or the raod) when the pedal goes to the floor.

:D cheers :)

so is that a recommendation on going to the floor or just your opinion

i guess what im saying is

is there a rule saying to or not to go to the floor (if that makes sense)?

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
