lets be frank here, you dont need to head out and purchase the best wiring kit on the market. if you're building an all-stops-out system, sure, having 1/0ga fancy rca's/cables and funky titaniplatigoldsilverum terminal blocks etc is nice, but for a basic system something like an aerpro kit or even mix+match buying separate rca's and separate power cable off the reel etc is gonna save you a whole bunch. there's a lot of parts in these wiring kits that is superflous.

sound deadening can be done later if you so wish, but saving and getting the whole lot done in one fell swoop when the doortrims are off and the boot linings exposed and all that jazz will probably save you too.

your choice of equipment is nowhere near as important as the quality of your installation. i've heard big dollar systems sound like ass and very simple systems sound sweet - get your system installed right and the possibilities are endless. and also, you can always upgrade equipment as new things come out or as you find cash, but changing your installation can be a nightmare if you've invested time and money into building specific amp racks and sub boxes to suit particular drivers.

i still say put your cash away and do it once right. there's a term in the audio industry known as the "hi-fi rollercoaster". if you get on at the top you'll never need or want to go higher, but get on at the bottom and you'll find you wished you'd spent bigger first up.

yeah i didnt say i needed the best wiring etc...i dont want a system thats set up for shows n shit...i just want a nice system done properly.

and i agree that its either do it right the first time, or you'll regret (and pay for) it later on anyway

try getting a price from jb hifi they have all the pioneer gear and wiring kits you might be surprised how much cheaper you can get it for compared to car audio stores. eg at the time the pioneer deh-p9450mp was 1700 i got it for 1300 and my tsc-160r pioneer splits where 490 i got them for 380 because i got all the gear at once from jb hifi.

note i do not work for jb or am connected to them in any way.

lol, maybe if you were you could get me a discount!

the prices i got were off ebay, and included postage....

$1700 and $1400 for the 2 systems...with the first system using the second system's sub.

i'll compare prices on the total package with jb's best offers and autobarn etc and see what they can do

hey dezz, i know your posts are a couple weeks old but just thought id post on the chance that you'll check this before you spend your hard earned cash. I do work for JB but in qld so please enjoy my humble unbiased opinion.

I read through all you guys posts and was glad to see you get a lot of good advice from everyone such as the importance of SD and some good gear recommendations, however, please understand its great to shop off the net and educate yourself on specs and prices but please do yourself the favour of checking a few shops and listening to the splits on offer before you commit to anything. Also if i can give you one piece of advice to hang onto its that everyone has very different opinions on the exact same matters because everyone has different tastes and preferences and you need to work out yours rather than listen to the person who sounds the most confident about what is the best gear around.

Firstly i appreciate you wanting to keep it all a uniform brand and pioneer at that but for what its worth and again just my personal opinion but to put my opinion bluntly pioneer decks are fantastic, pioneer splits are great, pioneer subs are nice and pioneer amps are fairly nice. Nothing pioneer sells is rubbish but please remember there is a lot of awesome brands that do awesome products to compare the pioneer stuff too.

My biggest concern with the setup you have your eye on is that the TSW306C is going to be far from impressive running off the back channels of the GM6100. These subs can be made to sound good but not with any less that 300wRMS into them and preferable closer to 400rms. As in get a seperate amp and part with $300-400+ for anything resembling a decent result.

Okay i'm probably boring everyone a bit but just a quick word on the no back speakers issue. More speakers in a car will always sound like a good idea in theory but very rarely true. Imagine just using a four channel amp like the one you have mentioned for front and rear speakers and you have a car with a fair bit of noise in it. Preferable option for myself personally would be bridge the front and rear channels of the four channel to run just the front two speakers and forget about rears altogether to get the absolute best out of the speakers that matter the most . "Imaging" got mentioned a few posts back and to clarify this basically means being able to sit in the front seats of your car, shut your eyes and be able to distinguish where the different players of a band for example are standing on the stage in front of you. This can also be enhanced by getting a deck with time alignment or time correction such as the DEHP-8650 to centralise your left and right channels around your head like your sitting in the middle of the car.

Might sound a bit pointless with the sub sitting behind you anyway but remember the bass from a sub or subs has no real direction and in properly tuned systems it is very hard to shut your eyes and point to where the sub is located because it will just reflect off the front windscreen and help to establish the imaginary stage on your dashboard if you are just running front speakers. With the money you save on buying rear speakers and running a decent amp for them you can spend a few extra dollars on your front splits or your speaker amp. Also you mentioned just running your rear speakers off the deck which is can be done but basically means you will have to fade your sound to the front speakers every time you want to push your system hard anyway or tolerate the harsh and distorted sound screaming from the back of your car.

Okay wrote way too much sorry if that was painful to read but hope it helps you out a bit and if you have any more questions or want some gear recommendations i'll be checking back.

hey mate, thanks for the reply

the amp that the TS-W306C sub will be running off is the digital monoblock from pioneer....so it should run the sub at its full potential.

any chance you can score cost price for someone in Vic? heheh

personally i beleive that what makes a good sound system crank is all in the tune. i have a nice fold out pioneer headunit that is the only expensive things in my system.

boss 1000 watt 4 channels X 2

boss 1000 12 inch subs X 2

sony 3 inch splits in the front

jensen 5 inchs in the back (best speakers i ever heard and only cost me $30 cause they had the cover missing.

this system cranks to the point that it makes the dishes on the sink inside move.

put the money into horsepower.

just my two cents.

  • 3 weeks later...

just another question...was down at autobarn today, and the guy there suggested this

Amp 1 to run this sub

previously i was going for

this amp to run that same sub

he said i'd only need that second amp if i was running 2 subs...and that the first 1 he suggested would be more than enough...

what are your thoughts on this guys?

i dont now what that jbhifi dude says

but like i say in this post:

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...showtopic=96059

the pioneer head unit that i got is pretty d@mn good

(DEH-3750MP - cost me $230 retail $400)

then buy a decent amp for your subs (it has 2 rca out ie red and white)

and one for your front speakers and dont worry about back speakers

like i said in my post above, i dont really need subs as it is fricken awesome running them on speakers - and listening to what that jbhifi dude said in his post - i might fade my stezza to my front speakers

hope that kinda helps a bit - ohh yeah pioneer is good quality stuff

yeah i posted the actual system ages ago in this thread, not sure if its still there but yeah

going for a higher end head unit this time...

amping the fronts which are the nice yellow series splits from pioneer, running them off a 2 channel, rears off the head unit which is 60Wx4, not the usual 50x4

the sub is gonna run off its own amp, i just gotta decide which 1

  • 1 month later...

Well I haven't bought a skyline...yet. It should be damn soon. But that doesn't stop me planning a few simple things including a stereo.

Most likely I'll be using QUALITY splits (since they provide 95%) of the detail that I hear. A decent head deck (probably pioneer since that's what they do best - for about $200-250) and a 10" sub to fit near the battery, I'm still tossing up where to put the amp.

I highly doubt the splits will be pioneer - they aren't that good especially for the money. Probably focal, infinity, peerless, or any other ACTUAL SPEAKER company. Installed properly into the front doors.

Amp will probably be a 4 channel bridged for the sub, no rear speakers, use the empty holes to allow bass to travel easier into the boot (although this could cause a port noise issue which I'll look into)

The sub could be any brand really but might be peerless XLS series, something that sounds good in a small sealed enclosure (and Peerless is different)

For the money this will cost I can't see a better way to do it.

ohhh...and stereo is 2 channel - why would you need 4 channels to reproduce it?

If I was you I'd save several hundred on the deck and several hundred on the rear speakers. Spend this extra $500 or so on quality front speakers and install. The sound quality from decks varies insignificantly compared to speaker and install.

Hi, here's my setup... originally I wanted to go all pioneer like you since I had pioneer speakers and headunit (for the price you cant go past pioneer for headunits in my opinion)

but after some research found that pioneer amps and subs aren't too hot... hence why they are priced a little cheaper.

Here's what i got:

Inside the cabin...

Head Unit: pioneer DEH-P7750MP

$310 From overseas...

I think they approx $380 on ebay including postage. Good head unit... The one you chose is better :P sub out is a MUST

Front splits: The yellow TSC160R (GKtech is running a groupbuy on SAU...$234!!! RRP is way over 500.

SO thats pretty much the same as you :P

In the boot....

For subs Iv'e always had good experience with Kicker. And the amps they make to match their subs.

I literally bought $1000 worth of stuff from JB just today.

SUBS: 2 x Kicker Comps in a kicker dual Box $310 (RRP above 500) (300RMSx2)

Was originally gonna buy 1xKicker comp VR in a generic box which woulda cost me $300 anyway...99% of the time the box is more important than the sub.... you can spend shitloads on a sub and spoil it in a crap box. I installed the subs today... my heart almost stopped...literally. THese subs are cheaper... but the factory kicker box makes them sound 100x better than what I was gonna buy.

AMPS:

1xKicker Monoblock (300RMS). This is enough to run both subs. I thought a monoblock could only run 1 sub but apparantly not. ($400)

1xKicker 2 channel (2x60RMS) (this runs the pioneer yellow splits perfectly since they are meant to be 60RMS) $250

Whole system works out to:$1500.

Like I said I literally bought the amps and subs today after heaps of research and looking around. I'm no pro when it comes to this stuff and got a lot to learn. Just talking from personal experience.

If I had a higher budget I woulda probably gone Alpine typr R range or similar brands... but for my budget I could only afford to get low end stuff from big names like alpine....

BUt like i said Kicker are awesome when it comes to amps and subs. I woulda liked to keep it pioneer but didn't want to waste money on a brand name and not get the quality

WIRING:

When it comes to wiring, buying a normal wiring kit is a waste since you get heaps of power cable... but the R33 battery is in the back. so its not needed. and the wire is too thin. If you go for a more expensive wiring kit its the same deal.. a lotta wastage.. even if its quality. If your buying a lotta stuff the JB guys usually throw in the power cable at no charge... and charge about $10 for a set of RCA's

PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE dont be stupid and pay retail on any of this stuff... JB's and any other place, their mark ups are huge... if you want approximate costs...ebay will give you some idea i rekkon... but it'll still be cheaper to go to a store.

This is my longest ever response to a thread! Hope it wasnt a buncha bullshit. :P

Hey dezz,

Im just thinking, I am into dance music a bit too, hard house to be more accurate, and I prefer my 10" sub to 12" jobs, just because I find it really nice and punchy (not to say 12s arent, thats just me)

Now I dont have rear speakers, but are they really that bad? if you get some decent ones and you can set the fade front to rear... Competition use they are a no go, but for daily driving is there anyone who has put some nice rear speakers in? and how did they sound good/bad?

Ok, well as you havent done your sound deading yet, let me go in to that a bit more...

I have spent so far $700 on deadening (I paid to get it done too, that was a fair bit of the cost) But, its the 2nd best bit of money I have spent (we will get to the 1st later).

Whats been done, best deadener fully covering both front doors on the inside. Then all the bits on the inside. Then some bits of special foam behind the speakers to kill it more. Then closed cell foam on the door skins, so they are nice and tight. THEN, the acces holes in the doors. They have been filled in with sheets of aluminum, rivited in, siliconed in, and then deadened over as well. Basically creating as near as possible to a sealed speaker box. Considering I only have MB Quart 5 1/4inch drivers, it creats a good dose of mid bass.

Now back to what I think is the best money spent. GET A GOD DAMN ECLIPSE HEAD UNIT (8455 would be good). They are honestly an amazing bit of gear. Its not that I had a cheap deck before. Far from it I had a top of the line kenwood ($1300...) but this thing just by far exceeds it. Its just amazing how much difference it made. Personally I would sell the one you got, and just get the eclipse. It is honestly THAT much better than anything else.

TLDR - recommended engine shops for RB rebuild.
    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project.
