Hey guys, just wondering if i should do this, as someones putting an rb20det gearbox in an r32 gtr.

The main advantage here to me is price, a 20det over here can cost near nothing, whereas the rb25 can cost up to $$2500!

Im converting my r33 gts25t auto to manual, and would like to know what you all think of this as an option????

Also, what other things should be upgraded at the same time when the conversion takes place???, is heavy duty clutch the way to go?if yes which type should i go for?

thanks

If you put an rb20 box behind an rb25....

You will blow that box earlier... On a standard motor you would not have a problem.... But if you wish to push a few extra kw's you will destroy the rb20 box....

My old r31 rb20 went thro 3 rb20 boxes in 12 months (241rwkw).... Got an rb25 box and never had a problem

A heavy duty clutch will just help you destroy the box more quickly.

Agreed. My RB20 180 blew 3 gearboxes in 3 months after a got upgraded the clutch.

Sure you save money getting the 20 box, but the hastle of them blowing its not worth it. Nothing worse than sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck and being off the road. Doesnt take long to wear thin

I don't know how redily available Z32 parts are over there, but the NA clutch and pressure plate mate right up to the rb25 box.

And if you ever manage to blow up the rb25 box (which won't happen), it has the same internals as the TT Z32 box.

Do you know this for certain? Have you done a rebuild using the 300zx internals?

My 25det box needs new bearings, and CBC dont list any parts for the rb25....

I need part numbers for a bearing kit in the rb25det box....

    • Yeah, hard to find and a pain in the ass to change with the transverse engine. I’ve worked on a GTiR before and it’s not a job I’d ever want to do again. theres a company in South Africa that makes RS3 gearbox adaptors for the AWD SR20 including gearbox mounts, so I could modernise it and go a dual clutch with paddles. For now tho, it ticks all the boxes. Super cheap, can throw the kids and their junk in the back, and SR20 that I can turbo cheaply, a CVT that’s not a dog’s breakfast like the V35, and has 80% interchangeable parts with stuff I can source from the wreckers cheaply…. But it’s still unique. I love the wagon back of the Autech version. It’s cheap enough that I can buy another stock manual FWD Primera with SR20VE, swap the gearbox to the N15 pulsar short gear ratio box, swap out the brakes to the R32 ones I pulled off my 32, register it on club plates and take it racing. $1300 shipping from NZ. Heaps of parts and aftermarket builders for transverse SR20’s in NZ.
    • Hard to say, just pop the rocker covers off and have a look if you think it's cammed. You probably need to replace the valve cover gasket/half moons anyways.
    • From my youth: GTi-R clutch change is a massive pain. The gearboxes are fragile? But the car is super cool and I want one 😢
