hi guy,

i currently own a 94 R33 gtst. and am (was) aiming for around 250rwkw. i currently have 225rwkw@ 15psi using a claimed 450hp T04 with PFC, 550cc Z32 ect ect... engine is unopened.

now the problem i have is that if i try to run more boost the knock levels start to increase... af/r are perfect 11.9 to 12.1 but is not making much more power on higher boost setting...

i still believe the turbo can reach my goals.... but am now starting to wonder what else could be holding me back???? intercooler, exhuast, manifolds ????????

what do you guys think???

If it knocks due to pre-detination, could it be that the air in the chambers is too hot?

Do you have ajustable cam gears, and have you adjusted the timing when the PFC was done? I recken you might be able to squeeze a bit more out with cam-gear adjustment or something along those lines.

I would say a quick set of tomie cams and forget the cam gears...

Thats what i am doing.... Found cam gears are hard to get right and found limited gains/loses....

wat power gains did you get from your cams??? where you able to run more boost??

I think you are pushing too much power with standard internals

240rwkw-250rwkw max with standard internals

plenium and do you hav a heat sheild and cai

mabe thremo fans

try 100ron and new tune as well

do you want power and or drivability

do you have a fuel pump and reg

Remember running thermo fans can be a pain...

Yes it creases less drag on the engine.... But when the fans kick in it puts extra strain on the alternator... So its it really worth it???

I did have a thermo fan on the hr31 only due to the lack of room after i did an engine exchange...

But found the temp to vary heaps and on a really hot day with the a/c on the thermo fan could not cope...

It was on almost all the time....

Id be checking out your intake temp and buying a set of cams.... 256 tomie's will do the job... Also a cai will help if you have a pod... Remember the colder the air goes in the colder it comes out....

my aim is 250 so hoping internal will hold

plenium is standard and standard clutch fan, i have all standard heat shelds over the turbo and a good cold air intake system, i also have all suporting mods including pump and reg

and james i want both power and drivability dont we all!!!

thanks for the reply

Would a lightend flywheel do anything to power out put and clutch

any sliping

and last i can think of without doing internals is homing and porting your exhaust manifold or go after market 1

james

not sure if if a lightend flywheel does anything for power??? clutch isnt slipping

ill try to find someone to test my cooler, hoping that will be the problem.

if not ill might have to look into porting, manifolds and or cams

cheers

stock internals should be fine upto around 280rwkw, he certainlty wont be at any restriction of the plenum or intake at 225rwkw thats for sure. you can check to see if your loosing pressure by recording boost at the turbo outlet and just before the plenum to see if your dropping pressure. boost doesn't make power, airflow does. upping boost will only amplify your problem, it will add more heat. more heat = bad. drop the exhaust on a dyno run and see how much you make. if you make lots more (which im guessing you will) then you need to look into a 3.5" exhaust and a split dump system and big mouth cat as well will most likely help

if i can recall i have around 1.5 to 2 psi pres drop. will try the things you have mentions next week....

turners not sure but thinks the turbo may be out of flow?

not using electronic one just a cheep daul stage one which has been holding nice steady boost for 3 years now....

    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.

    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
