Hi all, getting closer to start spending stupid amounts of money on my car and am starting to wonder about turbos. I've been told all sorts of different things in regards to which turbo I should use. I'm starting to think the T04Z would be a lot of fun as searching through the forums itseems it has only been bolted onto GTRs.

Does anyone have any suggestions ideas regarding one of these turbos being fitted to a 34 ?? the engine will have all the supporting mods done at the same time as the turbo.

I'm not chasing any specific power figure or have any set purpose for the car.

Hey mate, I just realised that was you leaving Bel on saturday when I arrived (with my dog). I was searching my head for your plates but couldn't remember who you were.

The T04Z is a pretty bloody big turbo. You would need to do some farily major internal work to raise the rev limit to make any use of it at all.

I seriously think you are better off deciding on a power figure, maybe go for a ride in some powerful cars to decide, and then pick your parts to suit that.

Hi mate, I didn't see your car anywhere, which is probably why I didn't say hi :)

I was out on saturday night with an R33 with roughly 320rwkw and it really looks like a lot of fun :)

what would be needed/recommended for 270-300rwkw ?? I would basically like to keep the engine internally stock unless something happens/is needed.

A T04Z is too big (overkill) for 270-300rwkw.

I'd look along the lines of a GT3040 or similar, plenty of guys on the forums with setups using that turbo in your desired power range. I also wouldn't push it any harder than that - as the bottom end is only limited in that sort of power application.

Ahhh, ok. I had originally been told a GT-RS would be the ideal turbo for what I was looking for, but I keep getting people telling me different things.

For the second round of mods I was looking at turbo, cams, fuel system, coils, oil cooler.

I already have FMIC, PFC, filter, full 3" zorst with hi flow cat, EBC.

What sort of power would be possible with a GT-RS and those mods ??

As Morgs said, a T04Z is way to big for 270-300rwkw.

Something like a GT-RS would be perfect in a low mount setup, or there are a couple of high mount options you could choose (ie GT3040, Trust TD06 etc) but these would up the costs by the time you buy a manifold, wastegate and the required fittings.

Do a search. 270-300rwkw is an extremely common question and many people will have asked, and had answered all your questions that you havent even thought of yet.

Its approx 10-12k adventure if you plan on having it remotely reliable

yes and no. either the GTRS or GT2835Pro will be fine on a stock motor provided its healthy. My unopened (not even a head gasket!) 1993 rb25 was well used and abused on track and strip, running over 260rwkw and still has near perfect compression, so if your tune is good your stock motor might last indefinitly especially if its a street car.

the GTRS will probably be a bit shy of your target, you might see 250rwkw with a good setup. (has anyone seen more than this yet from a gtrs?)

im making just over 280rwkw (at 17psi) with small cams and a cheap cooler. IMO if your gonna chase 300rwkw and over, your best going gtr of some sort.

start by upgrading fuel pump and injectors to get the 250rwkw i mentioned above (may have to lose the "highflow" cat, as its probably not that highflow). might be possible to stretch the stock injectors with a FPR, as its rumoured that they actually flow around the same as r33 ones?!

I think the low mount GT30 is the best idea - good response, cheap to fit (low mount, internally gated), and plenty capable.

:P

You can get them relatively easy too...

That said, a 3040 should enable you to run more power in the future if you build the motor etc... but will be a little more laggy and more expensive for the time being.

Hey Binky1970....were you at the recent circuit club wakefield day ?

I think I saw your car parked outside the timing building.

Anyways your pretty much at the same stage as I am...except it looks like I might be spending the money on the exterior first cause of some pricks keying it.

However Ive been doing research on the turbos for my 34 for awhile and if you want good response and around 270 -300rwkw id say HKS 2835 Pro S hands down. along with some injectors, thicker metal head gasket and some cams and port and polished head.

If you get the one that comes in kit form than you MAY find it hard to reach those figures as it only comes in the 0.63 housing.....a custom manifold made to suit a 0.86 housing might get you what your after.

You dont HAVE to but for a high mount setup id prefer to change the plenum first to a forward feed style.

Goodluck trying to find a "bolt on" one for the neo....im still searching.

On the topic of high mounts...im very tempted to go for a 3037s highmounted with a external gate. This should definetly get you the power you want and will also look awesome in the engine bay !! hehe yes im a ricer ! :)

If I cant find a bolt on style aftermarket plenum that im happy with than ill most probably go for a 2835 Pro S or maybe even a 2835R with an external gate again this will require some more work with manifolds etc.

Or depending on budget might look into getting either a Blitz K5-660R or an Apexi RX6B......just to be different. everyone seems to go for garrett/HKS or trust.

T04Z......hehehe would be awesome but you`d get beaten by most cars out there with more responsive turbos...cause even when you do finally get boost youll be going sideways and not forward ! :)

Yeah I was down at wakefield for the track day. I was driving a mate down there so he could take photos of another mate. I'd like to take my 34 for a few laps but i'm pretty sure the stock turbo would spit the impeller really quickly :D

I was looking at the Trust turbo for the same reason of just being different.

nope the 33 greddy plenum doesnt fit the neo......you either need an adapter plate which is almost impossible to get a hold of or drill new threads in the cylinder head to make the 33 one fit. The second option is not one I would like to take....so im still searching for that elusive adapter plate.

the trust TD05-18G you mentioned wont make the power your after.......need at least a TD06-20G I reckon.

hahha your car will be right if you just run 0.6 bar of boost ie stock boost. I have been to wakie many times with my car and have never had a problem. But I have heard of reports of 34s running stock turbo and running 0.8 bar or more and blowing up their turbos.

I was there on thursday but I was with the pro concept civic....my car was out of action for track duties...blown turbo to dump gasket.

    • That was the first session so not a lot to take from the day. It was low 20s ambient and the coolant had got to 110 (and obviously had some pressure!) so that still needs to be addressed. I haven't downloaded the data yet but will. I had refilled the auto trans with Redline DT6 because it claimed the best viscosity I could find at 100o. It wasn't really long enough to get a good feel for that; while the trans got to 100o in the session it still wasn't shifting crisply as I hoped. I think I'll try a few more sessions before judging. No steering motor overheat but I'd hope not in only 1 session! But finally the suspension; it was night and day over the standard stuff and the car was a couple of seconds quicker on the same crappy tyres, which is a huge difference. I'll stick with that and get some sway bars and a mechanical diff sorted too and see how that all goes together
    • I guess it’s partially a compromise of how my car is used, wanting to be able to switch from drift to grip with track side on-car adjustment. Also partially with the way the knuckles are set there is more static camber but less dynamic camber gain. 
    • OK, so update from the track day on Friday It was a classic "an unfortunate series of events'. There were a few cars around and when i checked my mirror coming out of the fish hook I notice some smoke from the rear of mine. Looked again and it was getting much worse, I figured I'd blown a turbo or something to got off it and pulled off the racing line. However.... since it is a left hairpin into a right kink, I was on the inside of the next corner. There was a car passing me on the left and a big drop off over the ripple strip on the right......and someone had knocked the witch's hat that was on the apex about 1m onto the track. So, between those 3, I decided to mow down the cone and not damage my car/the other car. Right choice, but surprising result.  The car decided the cone was a small pedestrian so it blew the rear bonnet hinges up to protect their head in the upcoming person to car impact....I didn't see that coming and like an airbag deployment it happened super fast. Straight into the pits from there, everything was driving fine but it became clear it was a coolant leak not smoke, it was billowing up onto the windscreen. Onto the trailer and home. I'll do a separate thread about the repair (once I work out what it is ), but the immediate problem was the bonnet wouldn't open because the front was pinched onto the front bar and would not release. Ultimately we unbolted the hinge from the bonnet, pulled it back a little and it released from the front OK. "There's your problem", the top radiator hose had popped off at the radiator.
    • Yeah that looks like great caster, but I'd suggest trying less front camber some time and seeing if it helps with braking without reducing mid corner speed too much
    • I ended up setting the rear 5mm higher than normal to give some clearance.  My plan is to run the least camber I can in the rear which I think with the extra width is going to need to be -1.75 to -2.00° just to get clearance.  Guards have been rolled and pulled as much as they can/I would be wanting to.  front has the Acostal knuckle with the KPI change and the drop etc. So should be okay with the existing settings I have run with AR1s etc Front: Toe total -2mm(1mm out each side) Caster +7.5° Camber -3.8° Ackerman +15°
