A 2K car will cost you 10K because of import duties, tax, shipping, GST and compliance, not just broker fee's. They are usually the cheapest part of the process. Add in the piece of mind that someone in japan with your best interests at heart actually looking at the car you are interested in, and the fact that they can usually get you a "deal" on compliance, and IMO you would have rocks in your head to try and do it without one.

Well, all of you have convinced me. We have pushed the date back untill the end of the year, due to exams and stuff for the loinspawn, and then we will be heading off! I cant wait!! So, questions that remain to be answered - has anyone done the ferry across the bay in SA? Worth it? And what sort of date do people recommend? I am thinking before xmas, but maybe just on, or just after? Obviously traffic wont be much of an issue for most of the driive, but should I avoid adelaide - melbourne between xmas and new years?

Yeah you see them doing it all the time where the graeme farmer hits the mitchell. Another favourite is the tonkin hwy heading south after forrest rd. Same thing, traffic frees up, people nail it, cops are waiting. At the end of the day, dont speed, and its not an issue

Well, after some hardcore negotiations, we have decided to alter the plans a little. Since crossing the nullabor (in both directions) is going to take so much time out of the small amount of holidays I have available to me, we are now going to fly to Melbourne, hire a car and drive back as far as Adelaide (I didnt even know you could do one way car hire, but there you have it!) and take at least 5 days to do it, so all suggestions for between those 2 cities are now valid (and/or cool stuff to see and do outside of the CBD) kgo Mk2

So, I have decided to begin testing the waters on a driving holiday. I have promised the youngest a trip to Melbourne for her birthday (well, I wanted to go, and taking her along gets me out of hosting another 13th birthday party, and I still havent recovered from the last one 4 years ago, however I digress) and I am getting rather srs about driving there. I have an almost brand new car that is under warranty, so reliability is not an issue. So, on to the questions Has anyone done it? How long should it take? Is there anywhere along the way you think I HAVE to stop and see? (and any places you recommend I avoid at all costs) Is there any routes that are better than others? Is there anything I am likely to have forgotten to consider? And Lastly - feel free to give me some damn good reasons why I should just fly. kgo

what the hell does the invoices have to do with structural integrity? If the strut towers and rails havent been replaced then surely they can inspect them without knowing how much the fkn headlights cost you? I would find out if anyone else can do the inspection, myself. It sounds a bit dodgy that they wont even look at the car without them. Fair enough if they looked and saw that the front rails had been cut and shut, then they would want to see proof it was done properly, but if it wasnt damaged, then what is it exactly that they need?

Yep, maps available tomorrow morning, or PM me if you think you wont make it and I can sling you a copy beofre I leave in the morning. There will be a few stops and plenty of places to buy food / drinks, but 98 may be a little scarce, so make sure you have a full tank

come down hay st from the east end, and pretty much anywhere along the road side. Meters etc dont cut in untill 8am and we always manage to find a park close by pretty easy

It will def be on, even if its just me eating all the bacon, and pretty much everyone that attends has work on, thats why we have it early. So now Phil and you have no excuse, other than laziness and apathy!
