  1. I see...so what is the function of the oil? I'm not game to pull the gear apart in case it's full of complex little bits? I assume it's always in the nominal position for high revs and in the low revs is releases oil to the mechanism that rotates the gear relative to the camshaft. If you didn't have an oil mains pressure supply could it half actuate or not actuate at all?
  2. It's not that surprising at all since it's a pressure actuated mechanism. The oil supply to the lifters is seriously restricted already (see oil control stuff) then is opened out into a ~15mm gallery that feeds oil to all the lifters. It may work OK on the R33 on/off VCT but I reckon it's unlikely to work perfectly on the Neo head with the variable degrees of advance/retard.
  3. Guys I've had a closer look at the neo head now and I've gone with the external oil feed solution. I was about to try drilling through from the oil gallery for the lifter but decided against it because I reckon that the VCT will be calibrated for operation on nominal pump pressure from the block. I'm just not 100% sure that there won't be some pressure loss down that gallery feeding the lifters with all the points of loss at each lifter and don't want the VCT doing strange things. I just think there must be a reason that the nissan engineers decided to run a standalone oil supply to this rather than using the existing head supply.
  4. The head is on a bench and entirely dissassembled but the backside of the hole breaks into the oil gallery. How do you blow that out?
  5. Hey I realise I'm digging up an old post but can you (boost is good) or anybody else help with this mod to the neo head? This is easy BUT how on earth to you prevent getting chips in the oil gallery below that will be spat through the motor in the future? You obviously can't get to the inside of that oil gallery easily so have you just ignored this? Can you take the plug out of the front and the ball bearing and spring etc and clean it out? I just notice people talking about external feeds on Neo heads again in here, I can't understand why you'd go external if you can do a rock solid internal mod?
  6. Great thanks guys. This is going to be easy......haha
  7. Thanks for the reply guys. What's the purpose of the oil pump swap? I didn't plan on going turbo initially but if you aren't running oil squirters where does the additional need for oil come from? Since it seems cheapest to buy the full motor I could definitely steal the oil pump off the RB25 but I was hoping to leave the RB30 pump in place.
  8. Hey Guys I haven't been on here for a while and just wanted some advice about my plan; I've got a healthy R31 silhouette manual that I wanted to throw a twin cam head on. My plan is to buy a complete Neo motor with all sensors ecu etc. Bolt the head onto the RB30 block and ride off into the sunset. -Use everything from the neo motor except the bottom end -Fix the vct oil feed issue as is well documented The Questions I've got are; 1. Will I have issues with the RB30 pistons clearing the twin cam head? (valve recesses etc?) 2. I'll end up with a higher compression ratio which is ideal but will it be excessive? 3. What have I forgotten? I am quite competent doing heads/timing gear/ welding/ machining etc so am not afraid of the process but thought you guys could point out some glaring pitfalls I have missed? Thanks - DAVE
  9. Good stuff Bec! Those minis must be bloody sticky on the skid pan. I didn't think the wrx would be as competitive as it was, I probably should have stuck around for the battles in the end.....whoops
  10. Thanks to everyone who helped. It was good to get back out after a couple of years even if it was cheating in my wrx... Sorry to see Russman's car do a mischief althought I'm sure you guys will sort it out quick smart!

  13. Would you believe, I was driving home from the city that friday night and saw that exact M3 come hooting past me. It was making heaps of noise and doing atleast 30k's faster than the traffic. He got off at toorak road so I guess that means he drove like a knob from calder all the way to there. My brother was about 5 minutes behind me and said when the M3 past him it nearly ran up the back of a car that he didn't see before swerving into the lane. I hope he is not an SAU member
  14. If someone has nominated me for the secxiest job in the club- I accept If not - I look like an idiot
  15. I wouldn't use 1 rod of another design. Your first problem is the static mass of the rod/piston combo. You always want them all matched throughout the motor and it may not be possible to shed enough mass of that 1 or the other 5 to get them even. The other thing is that the centre of mass may also be different depending on where the weight is in the rod which may lead to other engine balance problems with harmonics. I would say that if it is a visually different looking rod and/or it weighed a different amount do not use it.
  16. Does anybody want a datsun sticker to cover up their "new datsun" badges?
  17. Juliette, Rob still has a spare manual box sitting around our garage from his car that I'm sure he's willing to part with if you're interested.
  18. Maybe she thinks if she leaves information out of the entry then she will be placed in an easier class just like -cough- some people do with the wrx club.
  19. I'm gonna feed you all the red wine in the world, then send you home in a taxi and let you give the paint job some flames from the front window back.

  21. Not sure about the other guy's excuses but mine's out of commission while I sort out a new wheel/tyre/brake and flares setup. Could be a while, you know how these things drag out.....
  22. I've had quite good experiences with used semis. Sure if you get them at 30% they're pretty shagged and slippery but it's not uncommon to find 60%+ tyres for a fraction of the cost new and they will have more grip than all but the most expensive streets. At deca you don't really get them hot but for actual track work, used semis will outlast any street tyre. Street tyres get hot and fall to bits. Nobody is saying semis will make you a better driver. They will make the same driver go faster and unfortunately that's the game we're in!
