your car coming into Oz..
SteveL replied to lwells's topic in Importing, Compliance, Modification Laws & Regulations
yeh I'm still waiting for my B/L as well, boat supposedly here on Monday. Must admit getting a tad concerned.....don't want to end up paying storage costs. I've been told by my customs agent that the likely delay to getting hold of the car will be if it requires steam cleaning (AQIS). If that isn't needed then might be as little as one day, but the bad news is that 95% of cars that come in require it...... -

Do valves automatically close upon camshaft removal?
SteveL replied to Remix-'s topic in General Automotive Discussion
Yes they do, and the pulley's spin clockwise viewed from the front, I believe. -

Spoke to NYK Line (shipping company), ship is due in Melbourne next Monday (4/10), but also spoke with my customs agent who reckons shipping estimates are more often than not optimistic. Oh well, should still be here next week -

I would say it's very unlikely that wheels actually fitted to the car would be a target. It would mostly be things easily removed and pocketed that would attract attention (gauges, gear knobs, head unit removabe faces, etc). -
Aircon gas question
SteveL replied to Beer Baron's topic in Importing, Compliance, Modification Laws & Regulations
If you mean doesn't require de-gassing before import then that appears to be the case for one off's. But DEH docs in my possession show that for at least one recent import case, a formal commitment was required to be provided to the DEH that the car would be converted to R134a (or similar) within 21 days of import.....see my post above for greater detail. The bottom line is that it does appear that conversion is required, just not prior to import.... Do you (or anyone else for that matter) have some sort of formal advice that conversion is not required....at all ?? -
CAMS accepts CC - there's a place on the licenc app form for CC details, see the link to the form in one of my posts above.

You were beaten to it: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...ead.php?t=51928 -
They will be universal parts - receiver/driver, filler/service valves, etc. If hoses are required they'll just make them up (or they should if they're any good), and any o-rings or seals required should be readily available aftermarket. Of course, this assumes that the system is still working and you don't have any major parts stuffed/broken....obviously if the compressor is knackered you'd be up for quite a bit more. Anyway, if your asked for anything more than a few hundred to do the job on an already working system I'd be asking some serious Q's and looking at getting a second opinion.

Broker has confirmed that my car is 'on the boat', should be here in 2 weeks :headspin: OohArrGTR: So DOTARS is saying your approval has definately been sent ?? In that case they probably have and it becomes an AusPost issue, but I would (nicely) ask DOTARS to confirm in writing (e-mail at least) that it was sent and the date of approval. Also ask if they can send a duplicate as the original may have been lost in the mail (it happens).

If anyone wants a copy of the supp regs and entry form e-mail me and I'll forward a copy. All the requirements are detailed in the supp regs: [email protected] I went to CAMS on thursday to renew my licencs (expires 30/9) and they advised I should have the new one well before the event. I believe that licences will also be available on the day, but check with the NDSOC to be sure (Greg: if you read this please confirm). As indicated you also need to be a member of a CAMS affiliated club. Personally I wouldn't bother with the CAMS book, but it can be useful if your planning on doing some actual races. The max entries for the event is 120 - I'd get in early to be sure.

This really should become part of the FAQ. The stuff you need to send to DOTARS has been covered in this and other threads, plus PHATR32 is given you some info. But to summarise, you need to send: - completed import application - certified copy of drivers licence - copy of purchase invoice - proof of car age (usually Jap dereg doc) These last two should have been provided to you via your broker or whoever your buying the car from.

Your looking at roughly 3 weeks for the car to arrive in Oz from Japan once its on the boat. Definately send it express post, and theoretically you should send it so that it arrives on the first day of the month it becomes eligible under the 15yo rule (I'm assuming that's what we're talking here). That said there's someone that posted here who sent their application in several days before the car became eligible and DOTARS didn't seem to care, BUT it's a question of whether your prepared to take the risk. Theoretically at least DOTARS could reject the app so whether it's worth it for the few days invloved is debatable.

It may have changed but it used to be the case that the car didn't have to be registered, but needed to be roadworthy and no slicks. I certainly trailered my Z there one year before I got CH reg. I'm hoping to get there for the first time in a couple of years. Note also there's a 75dB driveby limit strictly imposed by the local council. They take their measurements using a hand held metre at about the middle of the main straight (they usually stand on the concrete apron between the end of the pits and the main stand). Also CAMS licences will be available on the day, or that is usually the case. I'll be helping in some way, probably scrutineering. Edit: if you want to save time the application form for the CAMS licence is available here: http://www.cams.com.au/Content.asp?PageID=PaperForms

r32 brake layout...
SteveL replied to killemaul's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
If you mean the proportioning valve, it's built into the master cylinder......or it is in the R32 GTSt master cylinder that I pulled apart.... -
I can put you onto someone in Melbourne that will be able to help - he's a specialist machinist that has fitted Porsche calipers to 240Z/260Z and does work for local performance specialists. PM if you want details. If I remember correctly these calipers are radial mount and you'll definately need an adaptor bracket. I suspect they are also designed for bigger discs and wheels

your car coming into Oz..
SteveL replied to lwells's topic in Importing, Compliance, Modification Laws & Regulations
My car supposedly left Japan today on the NYK Line's specialist car carrying ship 'Alioth Leader'. Estimates vary between 2 and 3 weeks for arrival in Melbourne. I'd be very interested to hear any recent experiences of people that have gone through Customs, etc using the RORO method in Melbourne. I'm using a Customs Agent which will hopefully (!!) speed/smooth things, but at a cost, of course.
