  1. What about that s14 with s15 headlight conversion? Damn that was a sweet car. It had a Signal logo printed on the engine, does anyone know if this car was really tuned by Signal in Japan? Sweet!! Hope to see that thing drifting at the next one.
  2. 300,000 yen/month...that's good pay! Works out roughly to be a bit over AUS$4k a month, depending on the currency conversion. But then I guess you work harder than us lazy slobs in OZ I've always wanted to work in Japan, be that my profession (Engineer) or teaching english. But I'm afraid of the language barrier as I know jack all about Japanese. I've heard of many people going over there to teach english. Just about everyone who goes over there seem to go there to teach it. I've heard some "un-conventional" things that come from the land of the rising sun. Stuff like Japanese men go crazy over blonde (non-black) haired girls. I had a friend (asian girl) live in Japan for several years, and say that business men on the street sometimes came up to her friend (I think caucasian) where she would occasionally cop a feel? But no one can do anything about it, you just have to accept it. I don't mean to give a bad impression, I'm just wondering if things like this really happen? Also, heard about selling girls panties in vending machines. How can they ever be sure where they came from? Could be a 99 year old granny, or grandpa for that matter! I heard that they've also got crazy Japanese game shows...that sounds funny to watch I reckon it'll be cool to go over there and experience the culture. One friend said that Japan is the total opposite to OZ. In OZ people are lazy, Japanese people work damn hard...etc.
  3. I admit that the R34 GTST doesn't look that great, and maybe the series2 R33 might even look better...standard. But just WHO leaves their skyline standard? There are so many bodykits out there that any of the skylines can look equally as good as the other. A question, has anyone heard of doing an R34GTR front conversion (headlight and bumper) on an R33 GTR? Can it be done? I ask because I like the looks of the R34GTR better, but I can't afford one and if I had a choice, would go for an R33GTR based on price.
  4. Agreed. In terms of getting the most out of a car, you really need to understand how the car behaves under different conditions and what you need to do to get it going Every high performance car can be improved. But their level of mods will be limited eventually, dependant upon several factors. For example the size of the engine. I believe that a 2.5L engine will always have more potential than a 2.0L engine? But this is going to the extreme, and how many people go there? For example, I have heard of near 600hp 2L engines...but then there aren't many people who would do this to any of their cars. Mainly due to the $$$ factor On the otherhand, a larger car (with a larger engine) will probably never be as light as a smaller car (smaller engine). A lighter car increases performance, but then also improves handling. But in the end, each to their own. If everyone owned the "ultimate" car...then everything would be boring seeing the same car drive past everywhere.
  5. I dunno...I used to like the R32 over the R33, but I'm not so sure now? The R32 does look tougher, but it's age is really catching up with it and it's not refined, looks out-dated but tough. The R33 is bulkier, smoother and more refined...but it's bulkiness can still look aggressive. I've never driven one, so I can't comment on their driveability...just from an aesthetic point of view.
  6. Both cars can be made to look just as good as the other. Yes, the 180 does look out-dated...but if you buy a later model with the round tail lights...then it looks better. Even if you buy an earlier model 180, you can still do the rear light conversion. In my opinion, the R33 being a much bigger car is more of a cruiser. Due to it's size, it won't be as nimble as the smaller, lighter 180. So in terms of drift or circuit racing, the 180 would be on top. In terms of drag, I think the R33 will ultimately be better due to its larger displacement engine. To improve the R33 in handling for circuit racing, that's where the GTR comes in. Both excellent for drag and circuit, more so drag racing. But not so great for drift due to its even heavier weight. It all depends on what you want in a car? In terms of daily driving, the R33 could probably be better as it more resembles a "family" car. Being larger and probably more comfortable. But then again, with the $$$ saved on buying an earlier model 180, you could use that money to go into the interior. Get a set of nicer seats for instance. The dash is a problem though, would be difficult to change that to an s15 dash...which is nicer. Not sure about fuel economy of both cars? But I guess the 180 would be slightly better?
  7. Really depends on your application? I believe too big an exhaust will result in you losing too much low end torque because there's not enough back pressure. But it will be better flowing at higher revs? I think most people can get away with a 3" and still make great power.
  8. Hello, I have a small problem with the idling on my car. It's a 1997 EVO4. Sometimes, it idles fine at 1000rpm (yes, that's high!!) and the car feels nice and smooth...but then after a few seconds it slowly drops to 800rpm and the idling starts to get a bit lumpy. Then it shoots up to 1000rpm, then a few seconds later drops to 800rpm...etc. Does anyone know why this happens? It sounds like it could be due to the ECU? Otherwise, what else would make it fluctuate as such? History: Bought car standard, idled fine at around 800rpm is I recall correctly. Then did mods to it which included: HKS turbo, manifold and wastegate, MoTeC ECU (stand alone, factory ECU was removed), 044 Fuel Pump, max boost was set to 1.2bar and the idle was set to around 1000rpm. Now, the car has been returned to almost stock: Stock turbo and manifold, stock ECU, stock intank fuel pump. And now, I get the idling problem as mentioned above. It's no biggy, cos the car still idles fine and doesn't stall...just that it's a little annoying problem Could it be due to a vacuum/boost leak? If so, where should I check? And how can this be done? Cheers for any help provided...
  9. Are external wastegates illegal? If so, why? If they still meet emission tests, are they okay? After all, it's still part of the exhaust system... Also, I never understood why lowering a car lower than 100mm from the lowest point is illegal? As long as you can still get a full steering wheel lock, all should be fine yeah? As for the excuse "lowering your car means that you will have to brake suddenly over a deep ditch, and so the person behind you may not expect it and rear end you..." that's a load of cr@p. I mean, the person behind should be far away enough to brake safely. Or what about the less competent drivers (eg older drivers > 70) who suddenly brake for no reason, or stop in the middle of a roundabout for no reason??? That's more of a hazzard I reckon!
  10. Interesting post, although I do find it very difficult to believe that such a car can run so fast with stock internals and weighing so much. How much boost are you using RIPS? I have never heard any car in Japan running so fast with stock internals...and I thought the Japanese would be up there with the best? Then again, Japan doesn't use NOS either.
  11. Well, when I did my turbo I also put in a MoTeC M48PRO and a Bosch Motorsport 044 fuel pump. Now, you may not want to go to that extreme...and spend loads of $$$...but I would under some form or another upgrade your ECU management, not just the SAFC, and your fuel...be that a bigger fuel pump and/or injectors. Running a larger turbo, this would be recommended...and a full tune of course. This will give you the most benefit out of the whole upgrade, of course it is going to cost you and is a fair bit jump in $$$. Next step after that would be going internals and doing another re-tune, but I'm not sure if you want to go that far. You probably could get away with the ECU and fuel if you run low boost. But if you want to wind it up to 1bar, I would definitely get the ECU and fuel upgraded. And I am sure you'd want to wind it up to 1bar once you've got the bigger turbo in...trust me Better to be safe than sorry. A larger turbo is going to suck in more air and so needs more fuel so you need to remap your fuel requirements.
  12. RS500: Sorry, haven't been on this forum for a while. I'll check my PM Mick: I am not sure what the maximum boost is for the RB25 without something going pop, but I would think it would be near 1bar (?). With that amount of boost, a Garrett turbo would be sufficient. I would go for a GT28, or if you don't mind a little more lag the GT30 turbo. I think Steve (on this forum) used a GT3037S on his RB25 and was pleased with his results. I think he's now using a 0.87 A/R exhaust housing. You should ask him about how responsive it is and how much he's making. He's making a very nice figure though
  13. With the HKS turbos, the first two numbers describe the compressor housing and the last two numbers the exhaust housing (I think?). For example, a GT2530 turbo has a smaller exhaust housing than a GT2540 or a GT2835 turbo. But with housings, the A/R ratio also determines how fast the turbo will spool up and it's max potential. A larger A/R ratio means that it will be laggier but have more top end, vice versa for a smaller A/R ratio. I think the GT28 turbos will have a GT28 exhaust housing outlet flange? You might have to check this. The A/R of the exhaust housing is most important, you want something that will match your engine. I used to run an HKS GT3037S turbo with 0.73 exhaust housing A/R ratio and it was a slug on the road on my 2L 4G63 engine. If I had a choice again I would go for a GT28 series for a 2L. Not too laggy, but great top end. Many people on this forum have had good results from a GT30 turbo on the RB25.
  14. If I had an RB25DET engine I would go for a GT28 series based turbo, be that Garrett or HKS. The GT25 series, in my opinion is a bit too small for the 2.5L and better suited for the 2.0L. Going for the GT28 will still give you good response and a lot more top end. Something like a GT2835 would be just nice In determining whether you're going to go for a Garrett or HKS, you have to decide how much boost you're going to run. As they say Garrett turbos are more efficient with low boost, HKS turbos run better at higher boost. So if you're not going to do internals and all, just stick with Garrett turbos. You can still keep an integral wastegate with the GT28. Once you get bigger like the GT30 series, you will most probably need an external wastegate. Although, HKS also have the GT30307 PRO S which has an integral wastegate. Not sure if Garrett have a similar thing?
  15. It seems that Supras do very well in the US and Skylines (eg GTR) do very well in Japan. The reason why Supras do so well in the US is that Skylines are hard to get hold of over there (my opinion). The Supra came out in the US, and as such is a more popular car and has commanded more respect and attention, bringing huge horsepower to it. That's why the Supra in The Fast and The Furious (or Slow and the Curious) is "the car" instead of the yellow R33 (can't remember if it's a GTR or not?). In Japan, they have both cars including the RX-7. From what I've read, in terms of drag cars...the Skyline GTRs and RX-7s are the most popular. The Skyline with it's traction and power, and the RX-7s with their power and lighter weight. The Supras are not common in drags because of their heavy weight. In circuit racing the AWD EVOs and WRXs seem to fare well, also the GTRs. In high speed racing, the Supras seem more popular than the GTRs and are reflected in companies such as JUN with their yellow Supra. All three cars in my opinion are excellent, but are better suited for different applications. I have always thought that the Supra is better for high speed racing, the Skyline better for drag racing where top speed isn't so important as acceleration, and the RX-7 a good all-rounder. In terms of looks, I would definitely go a black or white series 6 RX-7 with a 1999 Mazdaspeed front end I think the chicks would like the RX-7 better too. Sleek and low, although I don't really like the rotor sound. Supras are also nice being small and bulky, but they weigh it in too. Skylines are a bigger car and I wouldn't think they'd be as nimble as a WRX or EVO. The R33 is quite a large 2-DOOR car. So it all really depends on what you want to use it for. I'm think of selling my car soon, and as thinking of replacing it with either a GTR, Supra, RX-7 or 180sx. The reason going for the 180 is that it's cheaper, can spend more on it and get into DIRIFTING Or possibly an FC RX-7. Oh, and in terms of drifting...the RX-7 is all over the GTR and Supra. Just my 2c
  16. Just bolt in a pair of BRIDE racing seats and away you go...

    RPM Supra

Supras are damn heavy and aren't really up for dragging unless they have HUGE power!! I think they tip in on the scales over 1500kg and remember that's only RWD. Whereas GTRs are 1400kg+ with AWD traction. Supras are more suited for high speed racing, like 300km/hr+ down a freeway Nice!! They make big power, but aren't going to get too far with too much bulk and RWD traction.
  18. So how's the car look like now Hiep? Have you got the dump pipe on? Car go a lot better? What kinda rear bumper you got on?
  19. I have an HKS turbo timer and always set it to auto. After a 30minute drive through the freeway, and bumping into a few lights, the turbo timer usually ends around 1min to 1:30min by the time I turn off the ignition. But it depends on where you go. Remember that if you thrash the car around, then get caught at a traffic light for 3 mins, then travel another 500m to your home, you can probably turn the car straight off. Because your car is cooling off when idling at the traffic light for 3mins. But if you want to keep a fixed time, I'd say 1minute should be enough.
  20. A turbo will always produce more power as the boost can be wound up, whereas on the supercharger it's fixed and is quite low boost? Although turbos do have lag, which is a trade off for more power. Depends on the application, if u just want a little bit more power (no flexibility), then go the supercharger. If you want more flexibility and more power, but with lag...go the turbo. Also, I think there is a lot more support out there for turbos as opposed to superchargers.
  21. Yeah yeah...I have always wanted to experiment with doing your own DIY widebody kit. Like in Japan, they do it just using bit of fibreglass to create your own fenders. This way you can design it yourself, they just get someone to shape the fibreglass fenders, then they bolt them to the body of the car, and respray the car. I don't know how good it will look though, but might be worth a try on a cheaper car. Just in case it looks crap and you need to buy a whole new 1/4 panel.
  22. Well then why not another kit? Do Vertex make a kit for the R33? Or go a widebody kit! I'm sure there are a lot of nice kits out there for Skylines...
  23. Just get your 400R kit Hiep
  24. Yeah, there's an idea Hiep
  25. Ahh...that may be difficult to do seeing that a car with 600hp is going to be a slug on the streets. I really don't think there is a happy medium between the two. To get 600hp you will need to run a huge turbo which is going to be very laggy on the street. A high 10 in a RWD car is very difficult, especially then traction problems...but slicks should help. If you were to go a GTR, you could dip into the high 11s with relatively simple mods: Exhaust, filter, cams...etc. No big turbo required, so I've heard. Then depends how good a driver you are too. Did the HPI r34 make high 10s???
