  1. Why did they change the rules to allow only holden and ford to participate rather than a change to reduce costs for all previuosly involved? Everything was fine when a commodore v8 could blow away a Nissan 2.0 litre turbo or a Beamer but when the internationals upped the anti it seems we don't want to play anymore.
  2. Gary, lets keep things in perspective, not many are going to go and spend $150k on a gtst so lets use Roys bodget of $40-$50k and aim for similar lap times. For this application the 4 brembos that are factory fitted to the gtr should suffice with a pad upgrade, likewise the standard box will be up to the task. The front and rear diffs can remain but you could afford to modify the transfer case in this budget to address the torque trasfer you mention. Fitting three transmission coolers is a little overkill at this level of development but hey if you think they are required then the gtst should probably get a gearbox and diff cooler also. The torque split can be dialled quite quickly with a torque split controller (
  3. I think it had a lot to do with the Sierra/gtr domination. Crowds were down as Aussies weren't overjoyed watching cosworths and jap iron kick butt over the local muscle. Rather than use rule changes to reduce costs it became a two horse race running on a similar budget to that previously i thought. It seemed to work as the crowds returned to watch there beloved pushrod dinosaurs battle it out.
  4. C'mon Gary, i'm not talking a $150k gtr here, just something of the same value as a nicely modded gtst.
  5. Good point, in that era the gtst was only 2.0l - for some reason i had rb25 in my head. With respect to the 4wd, on a dry track the difference may be negligible but we have all seen the dominance of the 4wd in the wet. In saying that, one of my favourite highlights from Bathurst was Glen Seton driving his rwd skyline in the wet a couple of years earlier. You must ask yourself when Nissan sat down and designed a car to dominate the group A touring car class why didn't they go with a 2wd rb26. Obviously they found the attessa to be the consistantly faster combination. Despite its weight disadvantage over its 2wd sibling the runs are on the board and they kept producing and enhancing that system for over 10 years. I believe that if Roy's car was equipped with the 4wd Attessa this thread wouldn't exist as the "sensible power figure" before the tyres fry wouldn't be an issue.
  6. Please tell me Nissans flagship performer that met the Group A rules of that era. The gtr obviously did and i assume the gtst would have to. I can not recall a single team racing the gtst in that intenationally recognised category. Sure at half the purchase price it's difficult to go past the value of the gtst but a better performing track car, i don't think so. EDIT - Roy I apologise for the hijack. I've gone back and read the title to your thread and it specifically questions the amount of power you want to push through RWD so a gtr vs gtst debate is not helping your cause. I simply took umbrage at comments regarding placing Bens donk in a gtst would result in a quicker car. You obviously enjoy the engineering challenge although with respect to budget am i correct in recalling that you've already thrown $40K at this project? I wish you good luck.
  7. You are kidding yourself. The amount of development Ben has put into his front diff, rear diff & transfer case to get the 495awkw to the ground hasn't happened overnight. He's also the first to admit that with a professional steerer his car has a couple of seconds up its sleeve. Arguably the gtst may be more entertainment value for some but if the fastest way around a track was the gtst then i think Fred Gibson may have gone that route.
  8. Thanks leewah, i also remove the front propeller shaft. From Gojira's post he implies that a non vspec can be "switched" to 2wd. Removing the front shaft would be the same excercise whether vspec or not.
  9. Thanks sock, yeah i read that in the latest hpi also. They seem to referring to bleeding the transfer case rather than simply pulling a fuse like the r32.
  10. Mates 30th last night. I went out early on the 21/5 and ran two 12.2 @ 120mph but suffered pretty bad axle tramp with my high spring rates. I'm lookin forward to having another crack soon, and this time i'm going around the water no matter what they say.
  11. Nothing tossa about running a mid 12 in a family saloon. What's with the 6 second 60ft, I remember the night at the karts you were the king of launch control
  12. meshmesh - Did the Merc run?
  13. Excuse my ignorance Sk but with SOP feel theres not much happening until the boost guage starts rising. Using an extreme example, if you were to fit high lift cams and port the head enabling greater airflow then fit a monster turbo that's not spooling till 6,000 rpm how can power at lower revs be greater, sure the head can potentially flow more but whats pushin the air/fuel through?
  14. I haven't heard of the n1's making 300awkw so if you can achieve that then in theory the gtss's should not only make boost earlier but produce more peak than the n1's. We'll just have to wait to find out how good these babies are, although i suspect you've done your homework and know what to expect...
  15. I am eager to see the results when your car is fired up with the gtss's, response should be awesome. If the abovementioned spool up info is correct and they can make 1 bar at 3,200 rpm thats about 1500 less than the r34 n1's. If you want that meat under the curve while making similar peak power then wouldn't they be a wothwhile upgrade?
  16. I havent seen or know the car but a melbourne user calvantys is selling an r33 gtr for $38k on the forums at present. Doesn't appear to be heavily modded, might be worth a look.
  17. sorry snowman don't mean to add insult to injury.
  18. Sound advice - its not so much the maintenance (unless you have 6 speed getrag but for the wealthy whom can afford the r34 its only pocket money). The expense lies with the addictive ongoing development costs associated with the bloody thing. What felt like a quick package last week soon becomes average and you dig deeper into your pockets once again.
  19. I think you'll find maintenance is not too bad. Parts for the r33gtr are readily available and are not excessively expensive for what you get. Costs accumilate pretty quickly when rebuilding the rb26 however so obviously have an independent party thoroughly check the mechanicals and make sure you have a leak down test performed. I wouldn't be taking the risk buying one from Japan where these checks cannot be performed when there are plenty of gtr's on our shores already. You are at an advantage if you can inspect what you are buying in the flesh. The Japs dont sell their prized gtr's at an auction house for no reason.
  20. I'm referring to a magazine called High Performane Imports. There is a spread on Keirs car in issue #40 which was a gtr special edition. In the article it states keir had Trust TD06's that were starting to run out of breath at 550kw and he replaced them with Trsut T67-25G units which made 610rwkw. I think the mag came out at the end of last year and i cant confirm how up to date the info is as some of the other gtr's featured had been developed further by the time the issue was printed. Good luck with the project mate.
  21. that carrera gt is the ducks guts, imagine the difficult choice this bloke encounters each day opening the garage.....
  22. that should be some mean streeter - What turbos/turbo are you going to run?
  23. She is a good girl - looks like the training is complete! Next time might try and scum a lift and have my mrs pick us up.
