  1. Michael Clarke, the Aussie Test captain? In regards to working with a top sporting team. I've always considered it the pinnacle for a strength coach. A few years back I missed out on working with the Storm. A friend of mine does. Another works with Collingwood. So when I got the job with the Frankston Dolphins, who play in the VFL, the 2nd top AFL league in Oz, I was stoked. They've had 2 players drafted to the AFL in the last 2 drafts. A couple of months in, I'm pulling my hair out. Coach makes decisions, physio's make decisions, everyone makes a decision on strength training EXCEPT the strength coach. So I ring my mate Marty at Collingwood and explain my dilemna, the boys wont squat, wont deadlift, just curls and bench. I tell him I have a real issue. He just laughs and tells me its not a Frankston thing, its a football thing. He has been clashing with doctors, physios and sports science guys for 5 years. He has LOTS of Elite clubs train at his gym, Elite in Victoria. Theyre all the same, science has taken over, strength people have no say. My son Max always thought that working at an Elite club would be the best job, he wouldnt take one now. I explained the difference was our clients WANT to train with us, footballers train because they HAVE TO. Most got to where they are without weight training, they feel they dont need it now. Goosey, the coach, even got his 2 ruckmen out on the field to jump some high hurdles, up against Max, just to show them how much squatting would help their vert Max is 173cm, Russ and Khan are 198cm, they couldnt match him. The vids are on my YouTube channel somewhere Khan is a big chance to get drafted this year, he was drafted as an 18yo by St Kilda but let go The best job in strength, IMO, is where talented lifters come and pay you to train them. Rippetoe, Louie etc The money isnt as good, but geez its more enjoyable I had free rent, electricity, water, no rates and a good size facility at Frankston. After 12 months I got the f**k out of Dodge. Poor decision money wise, excellent decision satisfaction wise
  2. And so Daniel doesnt think I'm hatin just for the sake of hatin, heres a familiar tale with PT's I know One of my competing PL started dating a girl who was a PT. She finaly came to the gym with him. We got to talkin, she said she loved the way weights felt so she decided to change careers and become a PT She does the courses, gets a job, picks up a few clients. Pretty soon she realizes she is losing money each week, and she has signed a 12 month contract. She quits, but they keep direct debiting each week. She comes to an agreement and pays them thousands to cancel the agreement No names, no pack drills, typical big commercial gym chain, standard procedure So, she fell in love with weights huh? She was squatting, half squatting, an empty 20kg bar, benching an empty bar and not deadlifting I was stunned. I asked her how much she normally lifts. She replied she never did free weights. She no longer trains Passion, not money, will decide if you succeed Dan. Reading your posts, youre about the same level with this girl Buying supplements and training on a machine? Go and join a real gym, bust your ass for 5 years, make some progress, gain knowledge, then start up and succeed. Its similar to driving instructors. They teach us how to get a licence, not how to drive, we learn that on our own
  3. Oh, I absolutely love the Hammerstrength, its why I have them, but even the 47.5kg ones are too large My guys prefer to do extra reps on my home made 45's, way smaller and larger ROM Those 45's though have created the most "cuts" on my mats
  4. f**k, that was a shitload of catching up while I was at Worlds. Simon is 100% correct Tolga is very funny and knows his shit Daniel, I dont know you, I only know what you write, but you have no future as a PT, you have no passion or understanding for weight training. Most spoke about money. Passion is what makes someone sucessful............and that has nothing to do with money. Simply check out how many are doing courses at any one time, gyms are flooded. If you are the gun you tell us you are, you wont have issues finding a more suitable job, then progressing to the top in no time. I've had more than a few failed PT's training in my gym, telling me how many thousands they blew. Simon was one of them, and he was a gun lifter with an awesome physique, who knew his shit, was a good looking kid. I always tell people if Simon couldnt make it, its going to be very, very hard. I'm not being a smart ass, just trying to help Tolga, home gyms have their purpose, I always used one, but there are huge limitations Martin trained at home and totaled 520kg, 180 squat, 120 bench, 220 dead, he was a very cocky kid, strongest guy in his gym. He joined PTC in December 2011, by June 2012 he totaled 627.5kg at Nats, 227.5 squat, 132.5 bench, 272.5 dead. He actually broke the Teen WR by 100kg. He had actually benched 140kg a few times before Nats. He has since benched 152.5kg. How could he not improve training with Jack, Max, Alen, John etc For the purpose of getting stronger, you cant beat a gym that sole focus is on lifting heavy weights, look at the progress of the guys at PTC Brisbane ABC make the best DB's IMO. The Hammerstrength ones are too large for their weight, limiting ROM, I have no ABC though, but a few Hammerstrength at my gym
  5. Thanks fellas
  6. PTC NEWSLETTER #170 2012 GPC WORLDS I just got back from Europe yesterday, so I’m going to write this newsletter while everything is still fresh in my mind. For those that don’t know what I’m talking about, the 2012 GPC Worlds was held in Bardejov, Slovakia this year, and GPC Australia sent 17 athletes to compete, the largest Australian team ever. Of those 17, 9 were from PTC Frankston, 5 from PTC Brisbane and 1 from PTC Perth. Before I discuss individual efforts, the first thing that hit me when I got home was how many people back home were watching. Before a big comp like Nats or Worlds, I think a lot about the lifter. We prepare as best we can, but the last thing I want is for the lifter to bomb. I keep to myself and don’t say much, but it’s something I worry about. After the event, I kind of retreat into myself. I can’t explain it, its relief and a letdown I suppose. I tend to notice what isn’t perfect at an event, and focus on that, rather than look at the positives. This event was no different. What I didn’t understand was the affect it had on the lifters and relatives back home. When I watched the vids on my computer, I noticed some lifters close to tears with the National Anthem being played. Jesse tells me he stayed up and watched the entire event, he was in the chat room talking to others, parents, friends etc I must admit I don’t get emotional after an event, except for one occasion I’ve previously mentioned. Even though Max has medalled twice at a Worlds, and set a WR, Nina winning Gold and breaking WR’s, I don’t get emotional, so I miss how important it is to some. Only when I got home did it sink in. I now wish I could have enjoyed the aftermath more, but it was more about relief for me. Of the 9 lifters from my gym we had 7 Golds and 2 Silvers, we set 17 World Records, Max finished 2nd overall in Juniors and Nina 3rd overall in masters. I’m very, very proud of what they achieved, and relieved. Once I can stop noticing the negatives, I’m sure I’ll learn to enjoy the success of our lifters more. Here’s a rundown of the trip. We left Tullamarine on Tuesday the 11th of September at around 3pm, stopping in Singapore then London on our way to Vienna, Austria, arriving there on Wednesday. For those that haven’t been to Vienna, let me describe it. Awesome. It was Nina’s favourite place that we visited. The people, the city, food, shopping, was excellent. We left on Sunday for Bardejov, Slovakia, arriving at Kosice airport in the afternoon. The meet director, Jan Matej had a big coach waiting for us. We took 90 minutes to arrive at out hotel in Bardejov, sharing the coach with the Israeli team. The area the hotel was located in was ordinary, 5 minute walk had us at the venue, a very special place, and it was excellent. Another 2 minutes by foot had us in the Bardejov town centre. What a beautiful little town, and exceptionally cheap. Our team started lifting on Tuesday, the girls first. Vicki went 87.5/55/130.5 for 273kg@57kg for a total of 273kg (4th attempt deadlift WR 132.5kg). One WR Sussy went 112.5/60/120 for 292.5kg@54kg, 4 Masters WR Nina went 120/70/140 for 330kg@57kg, plus a 4th attempt 142.5kg deadlift, for an Open and Masters Women World Record, Masters squat, deadlift and total WR Amanda went 135/67.5/135 for 337.5kg@76kg, including an Open Women squat WR All 4 girls won Gold, with Nina finishing 3rd overall in Masters. The other 3 girls on the Aussie team, Tish, Cami and Bec, also won Gold. Emad was the first of our male lifters, followed by Conor, Max, Spiros and Jack. Emad, Spiros and Jack won Gold, Max and Conor won Silver. Emad set the 75kg Masters WR, Max set the 90kg Juniors bench press WR, Jack set 4 WR. Emad won a tough tussle for his Gold. He deadlifted a massive 260kg at only 74kg bodyweight to seal the Gold. Only later, when watching my videos of the presentation on my computer when I got home, did I realise how much it meant to him, and how much it must have meant to his whole family who stayed up to watch. Conor just missed a Gold, once he improves his bench press he will be very hard to beat. To be squatting 200kg at 17 and only 81kg is incredible, he had a 20kg lead after the squats, only to give it back after the bench press, a Silver for Conor. This was Max’s first comp for 2 years, in fact his last comp was the 2010 Worlds in the States. He had set himself to total 650kg, which he did. His comp went down to the deadlift. If Max had managed to make 255kg, he would’ve won the Gold. He did set the WR bench press with 155kg@86kg in the 90kg Junior class Spiros started well, squatting a 235kg PB, then benching 150kg, before re injuring his lat during warm ups on the deads with 170kg. He took a token 140kg deadlift. He was set to go well over 600kg, but it wasn’t to be, still won Gold. Jack had his worst comp ever, yet still broke all 4 of his WR, broke all his PB’s and won Gold. Jack dropped 7kg of bodyweight, had a doctor visit his room in Vienna, helped others all day Tuesday and half the day Wednesday, then competed. To put in perspective what a bad day meant to this 21yo giant, he squatted 280kg, benched 185kg and deadlifted 280kg, totalling 745kg, a 40kg increase on his WR he set in June. Emad went 220/122.5/260 for 602.5kg@74kg, WR total and Gold in the 75kg Open Men Conor went 200/90/210 for 500kg@81kg and Silver in the 82.5kg teen class Max went 250/155/245 for 650kg@86kg and Silver in the 90kg juniors, WR bench press and 2nd overall teen/junior Spiros went 235/150/140 for 525kg@126kg for Gold Jack went 280/185/280 for 745kg@153kg, Gold and 4 WR The other male lifters were Scott, Ricky and Zach from PTC Brisabane and Dan from PTC Perth. Dan finished 3rd in the 82.5kg open men Scott got Gold in the 90kg open men, including a WR deadlift of 302kg and WR total of 724kg Ricky finished first in the 110kg Open men with the Russian, but the Russian was 1kg lighter so Rick had to settle for Silver. Ricky totalled 847.5kg@110kg Poor Zach pulled his hammy on his second squat. It was 310kg. Zach is 18yo.Zach also benched 190kg, he weighed in at 144kg, he won Gold and set the squat and bench teen WR. Big Will lifted in the equipped bench only section, missing all 3 lifts and bombing. Zach also competed in the Equipped Bench only, benching a massive 250kg for Gold and WR. Dirk and Sammy ran around both days helping everyone that needed a hand. Every team needs helpers, we were lucky to have them, hopefully one day some of our lifters can repay the favour. With well over 500 lifters and 25 countries represented, Australia finished 4th overall. The scoring system is heavily weighted towards Masters lifters, of which Israel had plenty, they subsequently won Gold overall, even though Australia had the most Gold Medallists with 12, add 3 Silver and a Bronze to that. In the overalls, Cami, Nina, Max and Ricky all finished top 3. Emad set the all time Oz record 75kg total with 602.5kg. He has now gone over 600kg twice Scott set the all time Oz record 90kg total with 724kg Ricky set the all time Oz record 110kg total with 847.5kg These are all time, any fed, raw, by an Australian lifter. To have 3 of the all time records broken at one meet shows what a brilliant job the boys did. To do it at Worlds is exceptional. To do it 30 hours from home is mind numbing. Of all the performances, the 2 that stick out the most to me were Scott’s and Max’s. They wrapped, spotted and loaded all day for their team mates on Tuesday, beginning at 8am, before finishing lifting themselves at 11pm. I was genuinely concerned they’d blown their Worlds prep. Instead, they were unbelievable. Scott broke his total PB by 39kg set in June this year, Max beat his last comp total by 160kg. I already knew Scott was a top bloke, but I always thought he was a crap lifter. Now he’s top of the World. His performance was the best I’ve witnessed at a comp, ever. From the 8kg he dropped in the sauna the night before, to staggering in the queue at the weigh in, helping his 2 female lifters, regaining the 8kg he lost, winning gold, setting 2 WR, an all time Oz record, then getting up early the next day to help Zach and Rick.............and doing all this while on his honeymoon. Something had to suffer, and going by the smile on Tish’s face, it wasn’t the honeymoon, so I’m lost. The Australian lifters made lots of friends and had lots of photos taken with other lifters. Our crew was very popular and did their country proud. I’m very happy I was there to see it, and record it. The vids are on our YouTube channel and ProRawForum. From Bardejov we went to Prague, which has to be the most beautiful city in the world. Emad took the boys clubbing every night, going by the stories, they party as hard as they lift, to see Max and Jack with hangovers was very amusing. I was very blessed to able to make this trip, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous person. It was the trip of a lifetime, but I got a little homesick in the end, missing Jesse and my girls. I don’t think I’ll ever undertake another trip like this without my kids because I was quite miserable by the end of it. I was glad to be back home, even if our luggage didn’t make it...........yet. Jesse tells me he wants to compete next year. He was meant to go this year, but instead stayed home and ran the family business. Oddly, he would have won the 67.5kg Open Mens class at 18yo this year. He is quitting basketball and going to compete in powerlifting. I’d really like to thank everyone that contributed to our fund raising, and a huge thanks to Pirotta Roof Plumbing, who covered all of Sussy’s costs, accommodation and travel. Very special people. Their money was well spent, Sussy won Gold, set 4 WR and greeted everyone with a smile, a great ambassador for powerlifting and Australia. Now I’m not sure I’ll ever get another chance to travel overseas with such a great and successful bunch, but doing it just once is plenty for me. Thank you Markos
  7. Yep, the plates will hit the rack or J Hooks. The racks are made a certain distance apart so as to not foul against the plates
  8. Logic says the missing length has to come from somewhere If you want the shaft to sit in a rack then it HAS to come from the sleeve. Sooooooo, the shorter the bar, the less room for plates
  9. Mine is a proper needle bearing Olympic lifting bar, 15kg, cost over $500 The 18kg bars may be made for Health Spa's, should be cheap 4 plates will easily fit on my bar Mens bar is 2200mm Ladies bar is 2000mm The length is taken out of the sleeve, 100mm each side I know nothing about cheap bars, only official bars
  10. Ladies Olympic bar is the only one on the market thats the full distance between the collars but overall shorter, so it fits in racks They weigh 15kg and only have a 25cm diameter as opposed to 28.6mm for a full size bar ABC sell them, not cheap, but very, very strong How come you cant accomodate another 6" either side?
  11. Troy, I'll stick to giving advice in the powerlifting thread mate, though I'll continue to read this one for a giggle My area of expertice is making people big and strong, clashes with a lot of the advice given in here As birdy pointed out, not everyone wants be strong I figure if you visit the PL thread, you seek strength, I cant get it wrong then In this thread, aside from a few, I have no idea who you are or why you lift, so my advice might not suit
  12. That Gym Direct bench is one I designed for Adrian, he then gave me one Its easily the best flat bench on the market Tolga
  13. ProRawPowerlifting NOVICE COMP SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER LIFTING STARTS AT 12.00PM COST $25 ProRawTrophy – 1st PTC Frankston, 2 Skye Rd Frankston Markos - 0404 453 542
  14. Birds, incorrect info is incorrect info I didnt mention the lifters goal, I just pointed out that lifters all over the world can train much, much harder than most realize is possible The f**king internet is guilty of making lifters pissweak by sprouting out garbage
  15. Shit birds, I better let all those Olympic lifters that squat 3 times a day, 6 days a week that they may be overtraining their quads FFS
  16. My 2c I traded my black R34 GTR in on an Evo7, and got a whole lot of cash Those cars are so f**king good, you forget about the 34 in no time For 2 years it didnt cost me a cent other than petrol and oil, they are tough, stock I recently got an offer too good to refuse on my Evo7, so I'm back in a GTR, my 4th, and I'm very happy I'd also gladly go back to an Evo if the deal was right
  17. Daniel, you only use machines because that all they have Lucky you dont go to clubs with fat old hairy blokes dancing around, because your sex life would suck You would probably just go to a different club, hey
  18. Cheers for that Tolga, I have no idea where anything is in Sydney I havent been to the new place Trent moved to, only the original, I thought he moved closer to Sydney
  19. Jimmy, Trent at PTC Sydney PTC SYDNEY Performance Training Centre Sydney Address: 51/2 Railway Parade, Lidcombe NSW 2141 Australia Google Maps Ph: 0421 790 933 [email protected] ptcsydney.com.au
  20. Emad weighed 77kg on Saturday and squatted 232.5kg, thats triple bodyweight He will smash the Open WR in the 75kg class at Worlds. The record is 615kg In training last week he did 232.5/132.5/260 - 625kg He has a mangled shoulder, just had a reconstruction, so his bench is down. He benched 150kg at under 80kg at ProRawThree He has also deadlifted 270kg. He will squat 240kg at Worlds, bench 135kg and deadlift 265-270, all at 75kg, thus smashing the WR.
  21. Spiros, Emad and Max all hit PB's today, 17 days till they lift at Worlds Spiros squatted 230kg, Emad squatted 232.5kg and Max squatted 250kg Nina and Amanda both hit bench PB's, theyre off to worlds as well Amanda benched 67.5kg and Nina benched 77.5kg, thats 2.5kg above her own WR Had 5 new people join the gym this week, strength is on the rise Waiting for Nick to do a Saturday morning session, best session of the week
