Hey all, got a SII R33 and when I move the temp from 18 to 19 degrees and look at the blend door motor/actuator controller thing (on the left of the driver side foot well) I've noticed it goes full lock and blasts out hot air rather than moving gradually and allowing any variance between super cold and super hot.

Anyone else had this problem? I'm not sure if it's the little motor thing or something else.

I would assume that to increase the cabin temp by 1deg, would take a while, so it should go to full hot untill the temp increase is detected by the temp sensor in the dash.

My theory may be wrong, just sounds logically correct.

I may be wrong, but the "auto" feature controls the fan and a/c speed. So if you add a degree but keep the fan at 1/4 speed, then the heater position has to change to raise the temp.

correct... auto controls the fan speed to bring the temp up or down, and then maintain the temperature that you selected.

setting it to 24 or something will still make the unit blend the two together.

Based on that I'd be thinking that the temp sensor would be shot then... as changing from 18 to 19 degrees should not induce full blast heat, lol. I'll test the theory on the way to work tomorrow by setting it at 19 for as long as I can bare the heat!

I've never removed it and am the first owner in Aus but who knows if it was done before. Where is it located and what is the sensor looking thing at the very left of vents on the top of the dash near the bottom of the windscreen?

Not sure what you are refering to here, a pic may help things :(

Just to the right of the clock, behind the steering wheel, there is a column of slotted vents, measuring about 10mm(h) X 5mm(w). When you take the insert off you sould see a 10mm vaccum hose connected to it. Once the hose is removed you will be able to see the little sensor.

What I'm referring to looks like what a Commodore has on the dash to measure sunlight and turn on the headlights automatically. I'll have a look at what you're talking about, cheers for the info.

Tried your theory, switched it from 18-19 and waited like a mofo and baby did it just keep on pouring out hot air =D So either the temp sensor is stuffed or the blend door controller is busted and doesn't have variation, just has full lock hot or cold. Can someone please get in the driver side footwell and change from 18-19 and watch the blend door motor, tell me if it goes full lock or not.

OK... I checked mine today, to see if I could narrow down my clicking noise..

It's a cold day today, slightly rainy. If I press "up" on 20 degrees, I hear the actuator move a little, and the air feels warmer. Each time I push it up I hear another little actuator movement, and the air gets consistently warmer until about 30 degrees... my motor was still warming up at that stage.

So... based on that, i'd say you may have a problem. I tested using the blower on "face", outside air (not recirculated) and no A/C. Tested on fan speed 1 and 2.

AND! My clicking only occurs when I turn the car on, or after that, only when I choose "feet". All the other vents switch smoothly and quietly. (gotta find that other thread now!)

    • So could it be assumed it has been installed intentionally with potentially a power FC boost controller kit? 
    • Had my rig on Matt's dyno at PITS the other day. After a few years between tunes I added a few sensors and swapped intercoolers. Result. 553hp at 26psi. Not bad for an FJ20 that was built in 2007. The problem.. It filled the overflow bottle on hard runs which leads me to believe the head gasket isn't sealing. I have a coolant pressure sensor which was reading cap pressure at 22psi and occasionally overrunning to 23/24 psi on deceleration after a pull. It was not spiking. It has arp2000 head studs and a cometic gasket. As its been 18 years in service, I pulled the engine out and head off. Everything looks good but we obviously have an issue. Where I'm at.. Years ago I had the same issue, I checked the stud tension and they were all over the place. Some at 60 to 70 and some up near 90. I nipped them all to 100ft lbs and this stopped the water push until now. I believe this compromised the gasket back then. What do I do? 2 options are..  1) I bought arp 625+s, which I could put in with a new gasket. Thinking Kameari this time, reassemble and try again. 2) strip the block, get fire rings machined in with copper gasket and try that. I do not want to push it more than 28 to 30psi. I think the turbo will be out by then anyway. (G30-770). My other concern is the long term ability of a copper head gasket. Are they streetable for years? I feel like a new gasket with the new studs will probably suffice, but I don't know. Any thoughts welcome and advice on copper gaskets and fire rings. Thanks!
    • I'm a fan of the JZX110, and the Aristo. Big cruiser cars, and with the factory cars, super comfortable and feel like you're driving an armchair! And the JZ motors are a pretty nice engine too, especially with some basic mods.   The import process, and the need to be able to trust people, and the fact there's so many scammers around is what ever puts me off wanting to go through that ordeal!
    • I don't care for these at all, but at least the underside looks straight and not rusty. A good basis for a long life. Many cars from Japan have been lifted with forklifts and f**ked almost irrepairably.
    • Yes, but it's not dumb or dodgy. You can build a perfectly good boost controller from a pressure reg, a relief valve (looks same same as a reg if all from Norgren or SMC, for example) and a check valve. I ran one for years. Only superceded with  EBC because I could get one for cheaps and wanted finer control.   THis mod is certainly not a sketchy boost mod, provided the boost is kept below the "spin to death" threshold of the turbos.
