Hey guys,

My 32 GTR is stockish at the moment. As the engine is currently being rebuilt, i decided to upgrade the turbos to Nismo N1 turbos. The engine will be standard, but will have forged pistons instead of standard.

I'm just wondering how much kW would be achievable, at what PSI level of boost.

Also what supporting mods would be recommended? i.e fuel pump, oil cooler, dump pipes etc. Car already has a complete exhaust system and Apexi air filters.

to get to around 300rwkw, you should have:

injectors (600cc or bigger)

fuel pump (big enough to run you injectors of choice)

oil cooler is a good idea

dump pipes definately a good idea

ecu to run your injectors nicely (power FC is the default choice but there are other options)

cams will help too (something fairly mild like a set of poncams)

if not, cam gears will give a nice gain

clutch is a must. something better than stock obviously

brakes are a good idea to look at too

i'm not too clued up on how R32 N1s perform, but they are not the best pic of the N1 bunch. they should still be good for 280rwkw or possibly 300kw and running around 1.4bar boost.

Forgot to mention that the car already has a heavy duty clutch of some sort. It was very hard to engage and made some sort of hissing sound when engaged.

Do you much how much $$$ i'm looking at for all those mods? Funds are limited after the respray (because i was over gun metal grey, not coz the spray job was crap.) and engine rebuild. I also need a nice set of rims and alarm........so i can't go too overboard.

If you get R32 'Nismo' turbos there are a few to choose from.

I have RS581 spec units aka group A turbo's (0.60 AR front and 0.64 rear) and provided you run a mild set of cams will make alot more than 300rwkw.Even at low boost (13psi) 300rwkw is too easy when you set everything up right.

Mine makes about 280rwkw at a lazy 7,000rpm and 13psi of boost on a very old motor and I haven't even got aftermarket dump pipes on yet and just a 3inch quiet exhaust. The tune is deliberately aimed at keeping the power peak down to keep things ticking along.

The .48 front housing version is a smaller variant and will probably peak around the 300rwkw mark or a tad over.

If you are going the bigger units and want to smash some power out of them you ought to get 700cc injectors and if boost is going to be up around 20psi an O ring of the block would be a good idea in addition to the advice already given. The RS581/group A's can make close to 400rwkw when properly setup with mild cams and engine setup perhaps more with a more serious motor.

Definately put aside some money for tomei 260 deg poncams, they help alot.

from the graph you can see how the tune has 'knocked the top off' the power peak to keep things sedate on the 250,000km old motor;

well the really essential things on that list (in my mind) will be as follows - ranked in order of importance

the ECU

the fuel pump + injectors

dumps

oil cooler

cams or gears or both

you should aslo consider an EBC of some type. I am quite partial to the greddy profec B type II as it's small, fairly cheap and easy to install and set-up, and it works well on my GTR. but by all accounts the blitz SDB ID III and the dual SBC are a better unit, though at a higher price. as for prices, well best place to get that kind of stuff is to shop around on the forum, or through one of the net based importers as they always have low prices, but if you want good back-up, advice and service then speak to a local shop/workshop.

enjoy, it will be a weapon of a car. and dont forget once the motor is done to start looking at good tyres, good brakes and some decent suspension as it will allow you to enjoy the car a lot more with it's new power figure.

Here are the specs on the turbos i purchased.

The code is something like 14411-06U-00

R32 Nismo.

AR 60-64

5 degree cut rear wheel

360 degree thrust bearing

Steel wheels

So these are the bigger n1 turbos?

Brakes, tyres, suspension are still far away. After the rebuild and mods and rims, i wont have money left over for at least a month or two. After that maybe.

Basically like mine so follow the same path and 300rwkw easy as.

The cams are good because you need less boost and less rpm to make the same power . Makes thing more reliable before you even touch the headroom they give you for more power over factory cams.

Do the dump pipes while the turbo's are being changed if you can. You will need to port the old cast iron manifolds too as the factory one won't match the inlet on the new turbo's.

Then a Power FC along with 700cc injectors.

After that a Fuel pump

Then bigger Rb20/25 AFMs or just get the d-jetro Power FC to start with and be done with them.

I would be very happy with 280-300rwkw for a daily driver.

Hopefully all goes sweet. Work will be starting 2moro and hopefully will be finished within 2 weeks!

The turbos are actually Group A Nismo Turbos.

    • Let's be honest, most of the people designing parts like the above, aren't engineers. Sometimes they come from disciplines that gives them more qualitative feel for design than quantitive, however, plenty of them have just picked up a license to Fusion and started making things. And that's the honest part about the majority of these guys making parts like that, they don't have huge R&D teams and heaps of time or experience working out the numbers on it. Shit, most smaller teams that do have real engineers still roll with "yeah, it should be okay, and does the job, let's make them and just see"...   The smaller guys like KiwiCNC, aren't the likes of Bosch etc with proper engineering procedures, and oversights, and sign off. As such, it's why they can produce a product to market a lot quicker, but it always comes back to, question it all.   I'm still not a fan of that bolt on piece. Why not just machine it all in one go? With the right design it's possible. The only reason I can see is if they want different heights/length for the tie rod to bolt to. And if they have the cncs themselves,they can easily offer that exact feature, and just machine it all in one go.

    • This is how I last did this when I had a master cylinder fail and introduce air. Bleed before first stage, go oh shit through first stage, bleed at end of first stage, go oh shit through second stage, bleed at end of second stage, go oh shit through third stage, bleed at end of third stage, go oh shit through fourth stage, bleed at lunch, go oh shit through fifth stage, bleed at end of fifth stage, go oh shit through sixth stage....you get the idea. It did come good in the end. My Topdon scan tool can bleed the HY51 and V37, but it doesn't have a consult connector and I don't have an R34 to check that on. I think finding a tool in an Australian workshop other than Nissan that can bleed an R34 will be like rocking horse poo. No way will a generic ODB tool do it.
    • Hmm. Perhaps not the same engineers. The OE Nissan engineers did not forsee a future with spacers pushing the tie rod force application further away from the steering arm and creating that torque. The failures are happening since the advent of those things, and some 30 years after they designed the uprights. So latent casting deficiencies, 30+ yrs of wear and tear, + unexpected usage could quite easily = unforeseen failure. Meanwhile, the engineers who are designing the billet CNC or fabricated uprights are also designing, for the same parts makers, the correction tie rod ends. And they are designing and building these with motorsport (or, at the very least, the meth addled antics of drifters) in mind. So I would hope (in fact, I would expect) that their design work included the offset of that steering force. Doesn't mean that it is not totally valid to ask the question of them, before committing $$.
    • The downside of this is when you try to track the car, as soon as you hit ABS you get introduced to a unbled system. I want to avoid this. I do not want to bleed/flush/jack up the car twice just to bleed the f**kin car.
