Hey guys, just trimmed down my fan blades to clear my fmic i/c piping, i hear no end of ppl telling me they will run out of its efficiency as they are not all perfect, and one even said the water pump will die and that it wnt last any longer than 2 months!!!

What are your thoughts on all of this?, it was part of the HYBRID instructions so i couldnt see it being that big of an issue?, maybe an electric/thermo fan could help?

We've sold over 200 Skyline kits between the genuine Hybrid and Hybrid copy. I have NEVER heard of anyone having a noticable difference in water temps.

If you do experience any noticably bad differences maybe consider going with a thermo or 2.

Greg

installed a hybrid cooler and the intsructions were to trim the blades. trimming the blade causes it to become unbalance unless laser cut and is perfect on every blade. it cause extra stress and i have been told it is a really stupid thing to do by mechanics at various workshops.

just install some thermo fans like the davies craig ones.

ICER33-- hmm what rims are on that car in your display.. anychance u can send me that pic..

hmm anyways not from my own experience, but from sein it on friends cars, hes had no problems at all.. Has had the hybrid kit installed, with fan blades cut.. been over a year now.. no dramas at all.. n its a daily car, with all mods on.. so yea..

my blades have been trimmed also when my FMIC was installed.. no problems for me a year down the track

its not exatly a lot of rotating mass we are talking about here..

just because a mechanic says something, doesn't mean they are right.. most mechanics just regurgitate what they have heard before (from someone else), rather than have the ability to research an idea to determine if its actually plausible..

EXACTLY!!!

I have seen MANY cars with trimmed fan blades and have seen no noticable difference. It drives me nuts when I hear *mechanics* say that it will cause problems... errrrrr :)

After 4yrs, with a trimmed fan, my pump decided to start leaking, i honestly think it had more to do with the fact that the car is now almost 12yrs old.

According to my ecu, my engine temp stays at 84deg on a "usual" day and about 89deg on a hot day.

Look at it this way; your car is probably 12yrs old, if it goes (some time in the future) buy another genuine pump ($105 from Nissan dealer), then while the fan is off, decide whether you want to install thermo fans.

It is recommended to replace the pump after 100,000km, but not really crutial. When mine went, water only dribbled out, once the engine was turned off and enough pressure built up. Only noticed it the next day when i saw a small puddle (sauce pan size) under the car. My overflow and radiator were still full, so it didn't leak while running. Other experiences may be differant, but i dought it will "blow" causing major issues.

hehehe, i too hate "mechanics" speaking their garbage w/o actually having tested it out before in the real worl!!!, thanks again guys, i too have had no problems whatsoever, should i keep looking at the stock water temp gauge to make sure all is running fine?

Mine was trimmed back about 20mm (by me), run successfully for the last 12500km. Same result - does not overheat, vibrate etc.

The one word of advice is to make sure you radius your corners similar to stock. If you leave them cut off sharp then apparently they make a lot of noise.

FWIW, my mate runs a rally car, and finds that the engine driven fan WITH shroud is far more efficient - at controlling temps - than thermos. The downside of course is parasitic drag when it is not required; even with a clutch hub.

cheers

IS installing a Thermal fan that bad??? Also wouldnt you save a little HP by installing a Thermal fan?

No; and Yes.

The original question was whether there was a problem with trimming blades on a stock fan.

Properly installed thermos will work well, but at a cost.

cheers

    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack.
    • Probably not. A workshop grade scantool is my go to for proper Consult interrogation. Any workshop grade tool should do it. Just go to a workshop.
    • In my head it does make sense to be a fuel problem since that is what I touched when cleaning the system. When I was testing with the fuel pressure gauge, the pressure was constantly 2.5 bar with the FPR vacuum removed. When stalling, the pressure was going up to 3.0 bar (which is how it should be on ignition).
    • ECUtalk pages don't mention they support the ABS computer (consult port has more than one CAN), so you might just need a different scan tool. But, I would expect ABS is a different light to the brake warning/handbrake light, do you see an ABS light come on for a few seconds when you turn the key from ACC to IGN? But since you said: I'd have a look at the ABS sensors in the rear hubs to make sure they are not damaged, disconnected etc.
    • OK, if it idles at 1000+ with the AAC, its not an idle airflow problem. The cold start valve just gives extra air when the engine is cold, but you have enough air without it to idle at 1000. I think you are back to a fuel problem, sorry. Can you see the fuel pressure staying constant or does it drop as the revs drop to a stall?
