Thanks for all your input on this topic, everyone. Thinking just to hang onto the GTS-T for a few years, sell it and buy a daily-driver (something like a VT Commodore), and buy a kit car Countach from the U.K.

I have loved the Countach since I was young, and it's been my favorite car since. Even though I'm a lawyer and everyone goes on about how much we make, I don't think I'll be able to afford the $100,000+ for a real one, so it's gonna be a replica.

As for people that implied all sports cars have maintenance troubles, that's simply not true. But 15 year old race cars that have been sitting in Japanese docks for some time are more likely to have worn or rusted out components than other sports cars. Like anything, the more you spend, the better your sports car is going to be. It's got less to do with being a 'sports car', and more to do with the condition it's in, and how much it costed respectively.

How much cash do you have?

Not too much at the minute, but I figured I could do the swap in a years time or so, all things going according to plan.

That said, as I wrote earlier, I think I'll just hold off on the GTR idea as well as the modded GTS-T. Besides, if I wanted a modded GTS-T, I could buy one off the forums for around about as much as I could sell my relatively stock one for, so in any event, it's still not worth it.

what is the Countach kit? isn tthat a Lambarghini?

Sure is, my favorite car. I've been checking into them, and it seems I can pick a used one up without much hassle for around $35,000 to $40,000.

I know that's a lot more than a 32 GT-R would cost, but we're not talking about a Skyline anymore.

I'd go the GTR. But you'd have to buy one in decent condition, i reckon for around the 22k mark you can pick up a nice stocker, with a good body and good engine.

At the end of the day the GTST is also a great car, but if its within your capacity, then there's no point getting a GTST over a GTR.

Good point. I guess it comes down to a matter of money over anything else. If you can afford a nice GTR, then why bother with a GTST. On the other hand, if you can't afford a GTR, then get a GTST, put a few mods on it, and you've still got a ball of fun.

gts-t + mods vs gtr... go the gtr. cheaper in the meanwhile, and the attessa is awesome (with minor electronics knowledge).

Well, in mildura, you certainly are going to be noticed. hell, id say around melbourne as well.

the handling will we better for a rwd (but its still *not* awd), but.... well... just how much engine would the kit have? if its not much, you would be used to (and like, i'd say) the power. engine ==> drivetrain, etc... you drive a modified car, you know how it is.

in the end, i would have to say chase your dreams. handling at 200+ kph isnt a concern in day to day driving (or shouldn't be)

my dream was a 4 door 4 wheel drive v8 - because when it was concieved, it was the best i could think of.

i have a gts-4, so i'm part way there already. 200+awkw, and i'll count that dream as fulfilled - and being this close is bliss.

Most of those replicas have tiny engines. I would be embarassed driving a car that looked like a lambo, but has completely no balls.

Every Lambo replica I have seen has run a tuned 1UZFE engine. Hardly lacking in testicular fortitude if you ask me, particularly seeming that the replicas are usually lighter than the original.

As for the modded GTST vs. GTR dilemma, I too have the option of modifying my R32 GTST or upgrading to a GTR, but my solution was to keep the GTST and keep it stock. Whilst hardly a benchmark in speed, it is fast enough to keep ahead of the majority of traffic. ;) And the economics worked out far better than either modifying or upgrading. :P

Although with the way new car power outputs are skyrocketing, I might have to reconsider... I don't like the idea of a stock standard Hyundai Sonatas having more power than my turbocharged "performance" car. :rolleyes:

Not being rude, but I could start my own forum site on kit cars, I've been into them for years, and had an article on kit cars published in unique cars.

The countach kits that have the lexus V8 motor in them are very expensive, and people that have them ask around $60,000 to $80,000. The ones around the $35,000 mark normally have the standard Pontiac Fiero 6-cylinder engine.

Some people drop 350 Chevs in them, and they make plenty of power. A trend that becoming more popular is to use the 5 litre V12 out of the BMW 850's, but this is still a pricy option.

I've always wanted the Countach, over and above any other car (include those worth four times as much). It's my dream car.

The GTST / GTR argument was more immediate. I'm not planning on getting the kit car for a few more years, whereas the GTR I could get as soon as this year.

Dont by any of them, save, and buy a real Countach.

seriously! if thats your dream car mate, go for the real thing. it will probably end up being an investment if they are a rare car and a rarely driven car.

stick with a GTsT for the time being, and do some minor upgrades to keep you occupied.

just be patient.

A good engine for one of those kits would be the Ferrari V8 that Masserati used in those cheap 80's sedans..

Remember seeing one (complete Maseratti) in good nick in Unique Cars for like 6k

    • Hopefully it ends up being something manageable, like a hone, rather than a full bore—it would be a huge relief if it’s not as bad as it looks. Hang in there; these setbacks are annoying, but it sounds like you’re handling it as smartly as possible.
    • At the end of the day, it’s all about understanding the odds and being comfortable with the potential cost, whether it’s horsepower on a build or chips on a roulette table. And I have to say, the Laine example made me laugh—some people really do embrace that carefree, “roll and see” attitude!
    • Thanks MBS206, i got that PDF but got abit overhelm with all the connections and tracing of wires. I wasn't expecting to plug the dash harness anywhere. i was just going to use my electronics jumper wires to plug into the right pins like ECU power, ecu ground, ignition trigger etc... I do have a few ratchet straps locking it down tight. Fire extinguisher ready and only a small amount of fuel at a time, enough to submerge the pump.

Though, you don't need the dash plugged in to get the motor running. What you want is power as how GTSBoy said. You need to power the ECU. Find in the above link the ECU pin outs (Verify them before just connecting them up from things written on the internet). Find anything needing power, give it power, find anything needing ground, give it ground. Then give the starter motor power through a big cable, and bridge the solenoid on the starter straight to power too.  ECU will be on, and when you give the starter power, it'll spin the starter motor, and it should start. I also hope you have a proper stand, and not just the engine sitting on some wood. You will want it bolted down properly.
