At what point does the fuel light come on? That is, how many litres remain when the light comes on?

In addition, what is supposed to be the standard fuel consumption for an RB25DET? I seem to getting pretty crap economy. $40 = around 31L of Optimax = ~220K's (or is it $45 = 34L = 220K's, can't remember) of City driving, occasional boost, before the fuel light comes on. I also have a really strong smell of fuel when I start it up, checked the boot, no smell or visible leaks in there.

My best figures were about 300klms from half a tank (bp ultimate)

Im still doing my full tank - so far in half a tank i have done something like 200klms - thats using occasional boost (optimax)

I get 400Km to a tank

Fuel light come on with around 10L left in a RB25. If you fill up when the light comes on you'll get about 52-54L in.

The fuel smell is a bit of a concern. The most common place for a fuel leak is right under the fuel filter (check up front and not back). The clamps on the hose/filter almost always cut into the hose if you don't take care. Also, look for a splash of petrol on the ground on startup. This same thing happened to me.

If it's that then there is a DIY some where on this forum of how to change the filter/hose. Piss easy.

Man, maybe I am getting normal fuel economy then... 400K's to 65L around town is 16.25L/100... that's terrible! LoL and 14-15 seems to be what I'm getting now. Then again... i Originally thought the Fuel Light meant 5L left, not 10. Can you confirm these figures? Where di you read/see that it's 10L remaining?

Ok new info! My fuel light has just started coming on when going around corners, I filled it up, it took just on 52L so the fuel light must be set to 10L's? (Based on it being a 65L tank, is that right?) With this new info it means my car is actually getting ore like 12-13L /100K's around town. Which seems more like what I expected form this car, which for now is stock other than a POD with Heat Shield. Now that I have full fuel and know when the fuel light comes on, I should be able to run it to the light and will have a much better idea then.

P.S. Can anyone confirm or deny the fuel tank capacity and level at which the light comes on? (it certainly seems like 10L remaining given I got 52L in and the tank is supposed to be 65L)

Damn it. I have changed the Spark plugs. fuel filter and the OXygen sensor.

I have resetted the Ecu. The only mods I have is cat back exhaust and boost to 12 pounds.

I still manage only around 360kms per tank. And thats normal driving for the week.

WHY!!!!!!! when others are getting around 400kms.

there's really no need to drive it down to the warning light to work out fuel economy...

fill up the tank, reset the kms on the dash, drive for however many k's, then fill up and see how much it takes.

then work out how many kms/l you just got...

if you keep going down to the bottom of the tank, chances are you're gonna suck up the dirty shit at the bottom of the tank etc...

I get 350 to a tank. By "tank" I mean I fill up when it's pretty much empty, and it usually takes exactly 50L.

So I get 7km's per litre. =-[

50L's? Is this from dead empty or from when the fuel light is on? As I thought the 33 had a 65L tank?

I'll let you guys know when next I fill up how I went, I'm guessing a fuel usage around 12-13L around town.

Nah, I fill up when it *looks* empty on the guage, and it always takes 50L. I was only mentioning that, so I could accurately measure what my fuel economy is.

Other quick method is to "fill 'er up", reset odometer, drive for a day, and fill up again. Measure how many k's you did compared to how much fuel you had to put in to fill it back up.

All I can see so far is that mine sucks! Even though it doesn't really run rich (according to consult programs), and there is no fuel smell, it drinks like a camel!

I have an auto S2 R33 and I fill up when the gauge reads empty. If I drive another 30km or so the fuel warning light will come on. If I fill up somewhere between when the gauge reads empty and when the light comes on, I'll get around 52-54L or so (as Kennedy said). I will usually have done around 400-450km on this much fuel, and my average fuel consumption seems to be around 12.7L/100km, which involves both city/highway driving (guessing average speed around 45km/hr overall).

If you want to figure out your fuel consumption, fill up the tank until the pump clicks (don't try to overfill it), zero the trip meter, then drive until the tank is empty, or until the warning light comes on. Fill up again (preferably with the same bowser), note the trip meter reading and amount of fuel bought. Divide fuel bought by km's travelled and multiply by 100.

I use Caltex Vortex 98 (hehe Woolies discount card :) ) all the time, from the same bowser every time and my fuel consumption is fairly consistent. I drive fairly lightly most of the time, but I think I would get better fuel consumption in a manual. Just about to fit the Jaycar IEBC and DFA - that should bring me down to around 11L/100km.

But hey thats not gonna change any time soon, and we've been living with it so far without even knowing it, so life will go on.

Has anyone ever tested if you actually get 1L out of the pumps at the servos when it says 1L on the display? Im pretty sure that they would make sure we dont get anything over 1L.

i once managed to squeeze 58 litres into my sigma which only had a 45 litre tank. this was at a shell servo too, i went inside and had a go at the guy, he said " sorry sir but you must be mistaken about the size of your fuel tank". so as i walked back to my car i decided i needed one of their squeegees for my troubles. lol, he must have wondered what i was doing walking around every bowser trying to find the best looking squeegee to take.

I think that story is bulls#t. Today tonight ran the same story a month ago and all the servo's came back clean (most of them)

    • I had 3 counts over the last couple of weeks once where i got stranded at a jdm paint yard booking in some work. 2nd time was moving the car into the drive way for the inspection and the 3rd was during the inspection for the co2 leak test. Fix: 1st, car off for a hour and half disconnected battery 10mins 4th try car started 2nd, 5th try started 3rd, countless time starting disconnected battery dude was under the hood listening to the starting sequence fuel pump ect.   
    • This. As for your options - I suggest remote mounting the Nissan sensor further away on a length of steel tube. That tube to have a loop in it to handle vibration, etc etc. You will need to either put a tee and a bleed fitting near the sensor, or crack the fitting at the sensor to bleed it full of oil when you first set it up, otherwise you won't get the line filled. But this is a small problem. Just needs enough access to get it done.
    • The time is always correct. Only the date is wrong. It currently thinks it is January 19. Tomorrow it will say it is January 20. The date and time are ( should be ! ) retrieved from the GPS navigation system.
    • Buy yourself a set of easy outs. See if they will get a good bite in and unthread it.   Very very lucky the whole sender didn't let go while on the track and cost you a motor!
    • Well GTSBoy, prepare yourself further. I did a track day with 1/2 a day prep on Friday, inpromptu. The good news is that I got home, and didn't drive the car into a wall. Everything seemed mostly okay. The car was even a little faster than it was last time. I also got to get some good datalog data too. I also noticed a tiny bit of knock which was (luckily?) recorded. All I know is the knock sensors got recalibrated.... and are notorious for false knock. So I don't know if they are too sensitive, not sensitive enough... or some other third option. But I reduced timing anyway. It wasn't every pull through the session either. Think along the lines of -1 degree of timing for say, three instances while at the top of 4th in a 20 minute all-hot-lap session. Unfortunately at the end of session 2... I noticed a little oil. I borrowed some jack stands and a jack and took a look under there, but as is often the case, messing around with it kinda half cleaned it up, it was not conclusive where it was coming from. I decided to give it another go and see how it was. The amount of oil was maybe one/two small drops. I did another 20 minute session and car went well, and I was just starting to get into it and not be terrified of driving on track. I pulled over and checked in the pits and saw this: This is where I called it, packed up and went home as I live ~20 min from the track with a VERY VERY CLOSE EYE on Oil Pressure on the way home. The volume wasn't much but you never know. I checked it today when I had my own space/tools/time to find out what was going on, wanted to clean it up, run the car and see if any of the fittings from around the oil filter were causing it. I have like.. 5 fittings there, so I suspected one was (hopefully?) the culprit. It became immediately apparent as soon as I looked around more closely. 795d266d-a034-4b8c-89c9-d83860f5d00a.mp4       This is the R34 GTT oil sender connected via an adapter to an oil cooler block I have installed which runs AN lines to my cooler (and back). There's also an oil temp sensor on top.  Just after that video, I attempted to unthread the sensor to see if it's loose/worn and it disintegrated in my hand. So yes. I am glad I noticed that oil because it would appear that complete and utter catastrophic engine failure was about 1 second of engine runtime away. I did try to drill the fitting out, and only succeeded in drilling the middle hole much larger and now there's a... smooth hole in there with what looks like a damn sleeve still incredibly tight in there. Not really sure how to proceed from here. My options: 1) Find someone who can remove the stuck fitting, and use a steel adapter so it won't fatigue? (Female BSPT for the R34 sender to 1/8NPT male - HARD to find). IF it isn't possible to remove - Buy a new block ($320) and have someone tap a new 1/8NPT in the top of it ($????) and hope the steel adapter works better. 2) Buy a new block and give up on the OEM pressure sender for the dash entirely, and use the supplied 1/8 NPT for the oil temp sender. Having the oil pressure read 0 in the dash with the warning lamp will give me a lot of anxiety driving around. I do have the actual GM sensor/sender working, but it needs OBD2 as a gauge. If I'm datalogging I don't actually have a readout of what the gauge is currently displaying. 3) Other? Find a new location for the OEM sender? Though I don't know of anywhere that will work. I also don't know if a steel adapter is actually functionally smart here. It's clearly leveraged itself through vibration of the motor and snapped in half. This doesn't seem like a setup a smart person would replicate given the weight of the OEM sender. Still pretty happy being lucky for once and seeing this at the absolute last moment before bye bye motor in a big way, even if an adapter is apparently 6 weeks+ delivery and I have no way to free the current stuck/potentially destroyed threads in the current oil block.
