Personally I'd buy private first, then look at dealers, then look at importing as a final option.

Each to thier own.

I just like the idea of buying private because you get to speak to the previous owner, you can usually tell how genuine they are about thier car, and how much care they have taken. If you buy from a dealer, they won't know the history of the car as much as the owner, they are better at lying, and much better at covering up dodgy stuff with cars.

But look everywhere till you find the car you like, and make sure you get it checked out thouroughly

Ive got a family friend who is a mechanic so I might and try him to do it. With priv and dealer cars, can I request to take the car during the week or weekend into the workshop to get it checked??

I know that if the guy selling the car refuses then something is wrong with it...so I can walk away.

Usually you can work out with the seller who will take the car to the mechanic of your choice. For me the seller usually takes it and then I go in a take to the mechanic about the car. But it depends on the seller and if they are happy to give you the car. For me it is better if they do the leg work :geek:

Mate,

I bought my Skyline from Wagga Wagga, I found the car on the internet and the person selling the car was going away for 2weeks. That day I booked my flight with "REX" from Sydney and did no checks such as NRMA on the vehicle only REVS and took a big chance and bought the car. I drove the car from Wagga Wagga straight home to Sydney and after 2years no problems.

I looked at dealers along Parramatta Road and their is heap of CRAP waiting to be sold. Also looked at Auctions, REX's go cheap and when the dealer buy's the car he put another 10grand on the car yard sale.

If you have mates that are mechanics, let them have a look or have NRMA check it out, I prefer private sale due to the bargaining power.

How much did it have on the clock?

    • I also used Knox driveshafts when I the slip yoke T56 to the 3bolted TR6060 type. I believe I was one of his first jobs as it literally changed hands when I was there, started by the old owner and finished by the new. Everyone seemed pretty great about it. So wasn't shy/seemed pretty knowledgeable when dealing with weird custom people like me.
    • Just a reminder orange park was cool back in the day   and drifting the main circuit was even cooler   f**k I miss that car
    • We used Knox Drive shafts years ago when we were doing gravel rally, good guy but I heard it had changed hands? He's got a lot of stuff and is miles cheaper than GJ and so on. He used to have a lathe setup with a MIG torch on the tool holder so he could get the uni welds just right, quite a clever guy. I just got a driveshaft done for my sequential installation and that was through Balancing Services Australia in Preston, they did the Gibson cars in the old days. New genuine CV's, billet yoke, new centre bearing and chome moly shaft was $2k.
    • Thanks for sharing that mate, I've got a couple of spares on the shelf but all the unis are tight....will give old mate a shout. BTW are you sure it wasn't just a $400 paint job? Any detail of what they replaced (cut/reweld?)
    • Yeah I saw that about the US Q50 recently, apparently it was shown to Inifiniti dealers (probably to help with their depression about the cars they can sell). Seemed like a really obvious step to me, the platforms are very similar in many ways. Even if there aren't many people who actually put the money up it should really help with image/reputation. What hasn't been clear anywhere if that is a V38 model of if they are just going to add the trans as an option in a new model year. What they did with the Z from 370z to "Z" is just weird so I'd be surprised if they released this as a V38. Great news for me to have an option; it is far from confirmed that I can get any decent track sessions through the auto so having a manual I can swap to is great.
