after some info myself..........

what is the best Windows Vista copy to get? there seem to be so many types out there.

I have windows xp pro, dodgy version for $50, and its recently been cracked and fully authenticated. Bought myself 2extra gig of ram for a total of 4gig 533mhz ram so obviously I want to use it.

Would windows vista home premium upgrade for $200 be a good buy? I just dont know enough about the vista, except that a lot of ppl have trouble with it !

Pfft, legal solution =

Borrow a Vista ultimate copy. Then do trial period, which can be extended for legal 3 month. + do http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070315/#story1

This allows 12 months of Vista trial method. Microsoft have it listed on their website as well, so it is legal.

Brendan you won't find a 7950gx2 for under $700 I'm afraid ..... bloody awesome card though!

I have an oem (full) copy of Windows Vista Home Premium sitting here you can have for $200 - a client ordered it then backed out before delivery.

Vista is shit, everything run slower, it rapes your HDDs, heaps of software isnt compatible, heaps of hardware isnt either, it has massive bugs (like loosing control pannel and desktop settings)

oh, and just like XP it suffers from the memory hole issue, so the only real way to get more than 3gb of ram is to goto 64bit windows

vista home basic (VHB) = no areo gui, can play dvds, basic networking

vista home premium (VHP) = areo gui, can play dvds, basic networking

vista business (VB) = areo gui, no native dvd playback, advanced networking

vista ultimate (VU) = the works (its got it all)

but sounds too much like a holden gathering for me.... stick with XP and its alll good!! =)

if you want me to explain the memory hole i can... its a bit f**ked up, but im sure you will get the idea (or lack of =P)

as far as getting a gamin PC, get the fastest possible graphics card you can afford (either 8800gts 320 or 8600gts), ram speed is irelivant provided its 667 or better (CAS latency = no performance differance on a core2 or amd) try for 2, but 1 gig with XP is fine, if you can afford a core 2 duo get one, if not AMDs cpus are good for what you pay for em these days, dont skimp on PSU (but avoid antec smart power range)

ruf prices would be something like E6320 $280 + gigabyte mobo $230 + 1gb corsair 130 + 8600gt $330 + antec case/psu $190 = $1160 (im sure people could point you to cheaper prices... hence why its ruf =P)

I find that it doesnt have any prblems at all, and it actually runs faster than xp doing stuff in windows. Of course if u have a 3 yo pc u will have problems, but its made for the next gex (dx10) equipment, so all drivers and patches arnt fully sorted. Not really vistas fault for lack of support atm...

Id buy an A/M psu as well...wouldnt trust one that came with a case, even if it is antec generic one. Same for gigabyte mobos...

yeah I have found Vista to be surprisingly good too. Some small bugs, but nowhere near as bad as XP was when it fist came out.

And I am still running Vista RC2 in dual boot on my home PC- and even that runs quite well!

good call there on STALKER krastler but that was lucky guess

MSY price guide

E6600 $305

GIGA 965p-DS3 $148

1GB DDR2 Value $78 x2 for 2gb

WD 400gb HDD $154

8800gts 320mb $435 gigabyte brand

Pioneer 112D dvd burner $43

Floppy Drive $15

Chimie 22" WS $365

that comes too $1178 for just box add another $78 for extra GB of ram and monitor and case

and that computer madaz is pretty well a nice budget pc... above average for these times.

I just helped my mate with

Antec 900 Case (same as mine)

Core 2 Duo E6700

Kingston HyperX DDR2-800 2gb

MSI p965 series motherboard

MSI GF8800GTS 320mb OC graphics card

Thermaltake Bigwater 745 cooling kit

Logitec 5.1 speakers

LG 2ms 22inch LCD monitor

his computer is a god damn air conditioner with 0 noise... in the Antec 900 case if you have water cooling and turn down all the fans, its so quiet its just inaudible... water cooling would be louder than the case but thats dead silence too. we had to mod to put the water cooling in but it functions absolutely superb and temperatures are kept in the 20's.

cheers for the info, and cheers for the offer of Vista, Andrew....

I'll wait until I muck around with the new setup and see how it goes, so I'll hold off on your offer atm.

my specs:

asus p5n32-sli se deluxe motherboard, new (awaiting, replacing a nice gigabyte 915g mobo)

2 gig 533mhz ddr2 Elixir ram (awaiting 2 new gig, ebay, $132)

Intel 650 3.4ghz P4 chip

thermaltake cpu golden orb fan

thermaltake soprano case and 430w psu

2 x msi 7800gtx vid cards

logitech G15 keyboard and G5 mouse (new G15 to replace my trusty 1991 compaq keyboard!!)

x-fi creative sound card with 5.1 speakers and 5.1 headphones

200gig sata HD x 2 in raid array

80gig sata hd x 1

dvd burner, fdd, etc etc etc

19" lcd

asus p5n32-sli se

i vouch for that mobo, i have it now and im trying to sell my *******7950GX2 OPEN TO OFFERS******** or buy someone elses to get quad SLI..

know anyone with a 7950GX2 here thats selling?

It's a nice budget box for sure, but by the time you add the extra ram, a decent power supply and case, (and lets face it why would you run an 88 series card without a decent psu) it becomes $1500.

    • Yeah, it's getting like that, my daughter is coming over on Thursday to help me remove the bonnet so I can install the Carbuilders underbonnet stuff,  I might get her to give me a hand and remove the hardtop, maybe, because on really hot days the detachable hardtop helps the aircon keep the interior cool, the heat just punches straight through to rag top I also don't have enough hair for the "wind in the hair" experience, so there is that....LOL
    • Could be falling edge/rising edge is set wrong. Are you getting sync errors?
    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
    • Nice....looking forward to that update
