my starter motor seems to be staying engaged after i release the key from the start position, it must be common, as my last R33 started doing the same thing, i suspect that it is on its way out or i could be mistaken?

anyone else had this kind of problem??

also if it does need replacing, is a starter motor off a VL Commodore the same?? i have heard that they will bolt straight on the R33, as the price of a genuine R33 one would probably be sky high.....

any info, much appreciated

I've had this problem on a Mini, it was just that the gear which flicks out into the flywheel had become clogged up with dirt and grease, which stopped it from retracting. Yours may just need a clean. Take it out and clean it with some mild solvent and see what happens.

If that's no good then just ring around the local grey import wreckers for a new (2nd hand) one.

Has your clutch been replaced recently? If it has then quite often the starer motor through out gets clogged with crap and needs cleaning. this happened to my car when I had to replace a clutch. I just got the whole thing recoed and it cost me about $300 from memory for removal, reco and reinstall. Have had no problems since then.

Guys,

I fixed my starter motor today cause it was doing what Cam_r33 was dicribing.

Very easy to fix, and only took me an hour from go to finish.

All you need to do is get the starter motor out and clean it (make sure you disconnct the battery first).

I gave mine a good spray with WD40 into the starter itself, then take the two screws out of the solinoid and take it off of the starter and clean all in there and give it a light oil.

Don't be scared when you take the solinoid off the starter, there is a bit of a load there but it's just the spring and nothing will come flying out when you take it off.

The hardest part for me was getting my hand to the top bolt on the starter motor, but I'm sure someone with smaller hands will be fine.

It seems to spin the motor up faster now and hence starts it faster. Much quieter now and doesn't have any problems with disengaging now.

I'm happy to give anyone a hand if they need it - if your willing to come around my place that is :P

J

    • Does the old one line up OK if you try to put it back in? In the 32 (different geometry) it is hard to reinsert the ball joint with the sway bar and spring attached. But ultimately.....this wouldn't be the first aftermarket part that is not right....
    • Yep and yep ! Every time I now take out the R33 I get a lot of thumbs up as well, and my car was also a daily until last year. Still get people coming up and asking about it. A while ago the most memorable being a V8 commodore driver who approached me in the bunnings carpark and asked me why the were so fast and what kind of V8 it had in it. Couldn't resist and told him they were only a straight six the same capacity as the 161 red motor. The look on his face was legendry. However the shine has gone off cause as well as the appreciation there is now a lot of harassment from other drivers in there VW/Nline/Ae86 with body kits or whatever the hell they are, while all I want to do is cruise.( well sort of drive with spirt ) I always try and get the hell away from them by driving slow, putting on my lawn bowling hat and leaning over the steering wheel to look as old fart as possible.
    • There really isn't enough to help remotely....the nav screen likely takes it's visual feed from another unit that is not plugged in properly now (that is how the cima worked at least). Sounds like at least the reverse cam works. It is a possibility the screen is dead of course, minor knock while it was apart. I had to replace the Cima screen because it would not display anything in the morning when below 0.
    • Yeah, I get that. I try to be as cost-efficient as possible with cars, and typically prefer to buy them at the bottom of their depreciation curve. I was looking at those Bilsteins too as they're roughly in the same price bracket as the BC's - lack of adjustability and being soft put me off, not that I want anything too hard. That's my issue with the Skyline, it's too expensive and it's reflected in my driving. I don't mind going full pelt as long as there's a gravel trap to catch me. Really, proper safety equipment is needed for total confidence. Well this just turned up for the BMW. I'll try and get the front together tomorrow and take some pics of the absolutely horrid rear end; perhaps I'll have a crack at the rear on Wednesday. I need to make the car drivable before the weekend as I'll be driving it over to London.
