I rang Just Car for a qoute. (im 17). and they said. $3500 for full comp a year and $685 for third party.

were are all the other 17 year olds getting there insurance from???

I'm 17... paying 3k on comp.. there's no easy way to get around it unless you're willing to gamble with third party that you won't do yourself over. Comp paid off for me, had an accident earlier this year and it was all taken care of

No way I'm gonna gamble with 3rd party - it's taken me almost 3 years to save enough for a skyline.

As for insurance quotes, Ive tried "Famous" and "Just Car", and Famous gave me a better quote (but with a $3000 excess!).

I'm gonna also try "Torque" and "Unique Car Insurance" - they've both been reccomended to me. I'll let you all know how I go.

Also, if you're over 21, you could try "Shannons" and "HBF" -

im goin to take the gamble. theres noway im payin $3500 for insurance. and then when somthing happens......if somthing happens i gotta pay $1800. thats $5300. if i have a crash and the damage is more than 5300 i lose. other wise. no worries.

the only way i can get caught out is. if i Rite it off. or it gets stolen.

Stolen wont happen with Good alarm, steering wheel lock, 2 kill switches. the worst that can happen is a break in.

and the only way ill write it off is if im bein a f*k wit in it.

but i also have a run around car. so i wont b driving it to work and stuff. it will be just for cruzin with mates. and goin out with the misses.

DIY jobs for repair are pretty cheap considering you know where to get stuff, but, If you take it to a smash repairer you're gnna exceed that 5k cover pretty quick...

$2000 sounded pretty good if that was comprehensive... but then again you may have had a much larger excess.. $2000+ to compensate for your lower priced comp cover..

or

you're just really lucky..

I checked up on this when I was looking at insurance. Just Cars base thier premiums on the youngest/inexperienced driver. So if it's in your Dad's name, it's not covered if you're driving. So if you crash and write it off, you have to lie in the police report and say your Dad was driving or they wont pay.

My 3rd party is $800 a year

Full comp for me was $2500 off memory..

I trust myself that I won't crash, its the idiots around me I don't trust.

Im not sure if it's just me, but I get a fair share of idiots tail-gating me and crap on a regular basis. Im waiting for 1 day when I have to stop, and they're rubbing my bumper and they go through my car.

Hey all,

I'm looking at getting an R33 GTS, since I can't really afford the insurance or maintainence on a turbo model. Anyway, I just wanted to know what sort of performance I could expect from a GTS, compared to something like a commodore or falcon.

Also, I've got about $15k. Would I be able to get a manual R33 GTS series 2 within this price? I'd rather get it with a warranty from a dealer, but if I have to I'll get it through a private sale.

RoD

Does it have to be an R33 GTS? With $15k, have you considered perhaps an R32 GTS-T and using the $4k-$5k you save for turbo insurance and maintenance? Turbo is where it's at!!! Carsales.com.au doesn't seem so good for WA for some reason - seems to have much more Eastern States support. I reckon an R33 GTS 5 speed might be tough to find in WA due to our unrestricted P plate legislation, so good luck!!!

Also, have you considered importing yourself? I've seen WA importers such as http://www.prestigemotorsport.com.au/ advertising R33's for under $10k. I've also seen non-turbo tiptronic R34's for about your budget on Prestige too (like this or this), which you might consider (although they would be a little rough...). Could also try importing through http://www.j-spec.com.au/ and I think http://www.autoworx.com.au/ in Wangara offer importing services as well as being a dealership.

( :O You are in WA aren't you? Otherwise I just wasted your time...)

  • 3 weeks later...

Dude, for a start 15K for an na 33 is too much. You'll be able to get one much cheaper.

Do you want a car for the fun of driving? If so an n/a with good brakes/susp/tyres will be sweet. Eug has a GTS with all these things, and its very sweet to drive.

15K should = nicely set up na 33 and heaps of reliable cheap fun.

ps. In my experience, having an NA in turbo company can make you a better driver. If you don't drive better than the people around you, they will dissappear. The turbo boys can get away with so much (poor driving, bad lines, braking early etc), because they can just put their foot down on the bits between corners. Keeping up/being faster than turbo guys uphill through the mountains in an NA is a beautiful thing. I could go on for ages about this....

if your confident you won't be at fault in any accident.......

errr... that's why they call them accidents. I don't think you can really be confident that you're never going to crash. I've seen excellent drivers have terrible accidents.

I bought my GTS when i was 20. Went 3rd party with Just Cars for the first 12 months. Then someone hit me. Their insurance covered it, but it made me think how easily it could have happened and how much i didn't want to be left with nothing after an accident.

Went full comp after that and it helps me sleep a bit better. Also, the premium came down substantially in those 12 months.

not of relevance as im from NZ so things are sligthly different here.

damn i gota say that insurance sucks for you aussie guys. even insuring a trubo skyline here isnt anywhere near that expencive.. but then i guess we pay for it with our gas. and extra tax.. haha.

most insurance companys wouldnt touch me as soon as they heard under 25 and skyline in the same sentence. even tho it was only a 2ltr na.

but quotes for me was $1500 a year for full insurance on my 1997 r33 gts

but its insured through my parents for now at $950 a year for full insurance and im put as main driver. and excess is 800 or somthing.

will be interesting to see how my insurance gos when i get my car certed for all the mods.. :D

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
    • I forgot about my shiny new plates!
    • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
