Hey People

Iv'e got an 89 GTR and i swore i would leave it stock (yeah like that was going to happen!)

anywho it's got

Apexi Power FC

3 inch exhaust, front pipe

Dumps

adjustable cam gears

Garrett GT2860R-05

HKS twin plate

apexi pods and an HKS intercooler next week

Dynoed at 406 RWHP

The engine has 68k on the clock and i take it to the drags occasionally.

You all know how these things go, you get used to the power and it's time to step it up. I plan on doing a performance rebuild in maybe 18months, but in the mean time i want to add to the combo both in power and reliability.

Thoughts?????

Put some cams in and when she blows up rebuild with stong internals .

That thought had occured to me but then i put down the pipe and remembered i'm not ready to drop 15-20K on it until i actually put some K's on it. Seriously though, i have thought about some cams but this blowing up thing is a concern. Is this the end of the road HP wise? and if so what mods do i need to keep it together

You have an old tired engine there , the more power get the quicker you are going to blow it up .

The choice is yours, you have decent size turbos there so cams will help, but where do you stop?

If you havent done this you really should before it costs you a lot more moeny.

Rip the oil pump off fit a crank collar to the crank shaft and refit a new N1 oil pump. This might save it from blowing, or might not, only time will tell with a 16yr old engine at that hp.

Ohh and if your at 400hp as you say then your standard injectors (presuming they are standard) will need replacing.

where do i stop???? Here :

I guess it's time to look at suspension, brakes and start collecting parts for the rebuild.

Many thanks,

Zenith,

Yeah i've read alot about the oiling probs and it is a concern

N1 pump: i see alot of guys running it in their RB's. What about a Jun or??? oops just check the prices...N1 it is

Yes 406 at the skins and yes standard injectors....If i go to bigger injectors is it time to go with a 044, surge tank and fuel reg or i am getting ahead of myself here.

Yeh the N1 or HKS oil pumps are good, and flow around 50lts at 6000rpm.

You can go bigger injectors as you have the Pfc to accompany it. The standard fuel pump is pretty good for a bit over 400hp (look at SK thread about pumps) at the wheels, but when tuning it put a fuel pressure gauge on the lines to see if there is a decrease at high rpm, then you will know to replace the pump and new reg then.

Hows your clutch going?, is it standard as well?

When i bought the car it had a HD Nissan single plate, second pass at the Motorplex it slipped like a mutha so it was a no brainer to go with something a bit more stout, clutch is now an HKS GD Max twin plate, it took a bit of getting used too on the street. But now its eassy. It is excellent at the track

Should be mid 11s at about 122mph.

Sorry about the late post, I'm on night shift in another hemispehere and its messing with my stuff.

12.2 @ 115...cant bring myself to limiter launch so my 60 footers are kinda crap (must plant right foot!).That mph should be an 11.8 something. The g\box is also a concern so a OS Giken 3 speed kit is on the horizon, i'm going to want it for the rebuild anyway).

Forget the excuses i'm just not beating up on it enough!

PPL say to pull the oil pump and fit the JUN oil pump drive on?How can you do the machining needed with the crank in the car?

You cant, its an engine out and crank out job so you may as well do the rebuild at the same time.

I'm not goimg to bother with more engine mods. It's quick enough for the street and i'm not driving it hard enough at the track to use the potential it has right now anyway.

I'm thinking about the g\box now, considering the 3 speed OS Giken option and then it will be suspension, wheels and brakes. I dont want to break it, so the HP search ends.

If anyone has thoughts on the 3 speed idea feel free to comment

at that power level i would put in some larger injectors (sard 700s) and a nismo fuel pump to give you some safety. your injectors will currently be maxed and your fuel pump may or may not hold up. you dont want to be nailing it when the pump fails. then i would ad a set of tomei poncams, type B 260/260. after that (or before doesnt matter really) i would do some suspension mods:

new shocks/springs whatever your preference

castor adjustment (either rods or bushes)

sway bars

new pads

rotors

braided lines

good fluid

have some fun

but what you do it up to you.

Thankyou Beer Baron,

I have sent the e-mail off to my tuner about the fuel system...not really for any more HP but, as you have pointed out, for the reliability or is that insurance.

A light that burns twice as bright burns half as long they say...and i want this particular light to burn for at least 12 months. So while the cams sound fun , i think i'll get stuck into the gearbox, suspension and brakes. I will save the cams for the build. Hell it will only be 12 months away.

I appreciate everyones input on this issue, the opinions are varied but i sense the same undercurrent of "it's old be carefull". Do you have any thoughts on the "3 speed kit"

406hp, stock injectors etc is fine.

As long as the AFR's are ok, and the fuel pump isnt dying, it will be fine.

300rwkw from GTR injectors is not out of the limits.

Personally, leave the car as is. Simple.

Save the cash for rebuild and stuff and then wind the wick up when you have it all done.

you should last a long time on 300rwkw if you look after the car well.

Thanks all, I've done the reading and i'm now aware of the magnitude of the job (oil pump) and it will have to wait for the rebuild. This engine is only comming apart once.

As far as the fuel system goes, ive sent the e-mail and i'll make the call to my tuner and discuss it tonight ...or is that day over there.

    • When you crank your car, and hit it with a timing light, can you see a steady crank timing?
    • Oh, forgot to add, A few months ago I was getting mixture codes and the car was using crap loads of fuel. You could smell the unburned fuel in the exhaust, it was crazy strong. Economy was over 17.5 l/100 and usually around 19. I smoked the engine and found a leaky CCV hose which I replaced and then I replaced my two pre cat O2 sensors, I also replaced the MAF. This fixed my mixture codes and improved my exonomy but I'm still 14 - 15 l/100 when pottering about town so something is still amiss. Throttle response is much better and it has more pep but I'd like to know why it's still so thirsty (and I'm hoping that whatever it is gives me a bit more poke).

    • Hello all, currently finishing up a rb25 swap into my s14. Having issues with starting, car has spark (confirmed by pulling a plug and watching it spark), has fuel(confirmed by checking pulse/voltage at injectors all spark plugs are soaked in fuel). Car cranks over and pops into the exhaust with a heavy fuel smell but no attempt to start or run, I have torn the timing cover off and triple confirmed timing, turned the CAS in multiple spots both directions, attempted to start with coolant temp and maf unplugged, checked my fuel lines and made sure they weren’t backwards, checked voltage at cas/injectors/coilpacks, made sure all the grounds in the harness are connected and added a few grounding straps (1 from chassis to block, 1 from chassis to head, and 1 from chassis to igniter chip) I am getting stumped here. As a last ditch effort I made a full grounding harness tonight that’s going to run from the battery and add an extra ground from the battery onto the coil pack harness/igniter chip/ intake manifold/ Wiring specialties harness ground/ and alternator. I’m hoping maybe the grounding harness will fix it here but posting here to see if anyone has any other ideas on what else I can check. My fuel pressure is unknown right gauge will be here tomorrow.  IMG_3206.mov
