Noisy Diff/gearbox When Reversing!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My R32 gtst makes a grinding/whiring kind of noise when i reverse.

It isnt as loud when the clutch is out in reverse but if i roll backwards

with the clutch in it gets real noisy.

Would it be the diff or the gearbox????

It seems to happen when the car hasnt been driven for a couple of hours and everything

goes cold. Once its warmed up and been driven round a bit it doesnt seem to happen.

Thanks

yeah mate i have.

it started to make a noise a little while after i bought the car.

Its not the normal whine that a gearbox makes in reverse

its more of a grinding noise

I had wrote up a very detailed explanation of the problem and how to solve it but some how i lost the whole post so... Simple solution is to remove your rear brake pads and file away the sharp leadign edge and reinsert them.

Hope this helps, cheers

HAHA. sory dude. i know the noise you mean. the bearings in the gearbox are worn. in paticular the small bearing on the sandwich plate.(counter shaft rear bearing)

firstly make sure the oil leval is corect.

does it make a knocking noise at idle in neutral?

i have seen the rear bearings fail because the oil "gutter" on the sandwich plate falls off. so the rear bearings get starved of oil.

but only in reverse. hmm. is it hard to select reverse?

R32Dreamer

I think that might be the problem as it only started after some heavy braking on the track and it only happens in reverse not when going forwards.

Ill have a look on the weekend if thats the problem

T04GTR

I thought it might be a bearing but it seemed weird it was only in reverse and that there is no trouble selecting reverse. I'm gonna change the g/box oil on the weekend too.

Thanks for the advice

I recently dropped in a s/h wrecker rb20det box.

It does EXACTLY this. Its quiet if the clutch is completely out when reversing, if you are rolling back with the clutch in it makes a nasty arsed noise.

Oil level is fine.

Apart from the strange reverse noise its the quietest rb20 box i've heard, no input shaft noise, no whine through the gears and shifts perfectly.

The diff does have a whine.

So your not alone.. Its 100% the same problem. :D

At least i now know im not the only person with this problem.

Probably wont worry bout it too much tho.

New g/box oil and check the rear pads thats about all Ill do.

you might find the whirring noise to be the reverse gear itself. its a striaght cut "spur" gear.. physically sliding in and out of mest when selected... the other gears are always in mesh and the synchros connect them to the main and layshaft.. all manuals in reverse make a whirring noise in reverse.. don't worry too much about it i rekon anyway.... if your drivin a skyline.. why are you going backwards anyways? :)

Chriso....

Mine makes a horrid noise with the clutch in and rolling backwards.

Its definitely not the usual reverse gear noise you are talking about.

Have another read of the OPs post you will see his makes mention its really loud when the clutch is in and moving backwards.

Its not normal, mines still hanging in there so meh.. until it blows. If it does I'm considering auto... :)

Will work well with a slight shift kit and the rb30's off idle boost.

I know of an r33 running its stock auto that for some time was pushing 240-280rwkw on his stock auto, he's now up to 317rwkw running 25-26psi through his gt35r. :)

So the auto's appear to be quite tuff.
