Hi All,

Anyone got a HKS GTRS Turbo installed?

Or what are your opinions about them? Good low down rev turbo? Good for drifting / drag?

I'm asking this as the following kit seems reasonably priced, and am considering one..

http://www.nengun.com/catalogue/product/42

any sugestions or info about this turbo would be great...

thanks,

-JD

PS: I'm looking to hit 250rwks with a good low down response turbo..

what other mods do you have?

the GT-RS is rate @ 400Ps, there is no point getting the turbo unless you have a pfc, larger injectors (550cc), full exhuast, fmic, a heavy duty clutch, fuel pump etc etc...

also check out

i bought myself a hks GT2835 PRO S its rate @ 420ps (its a step up from the GT-RS, more power not alittle less responds than the rs)

and i didnt have pfc or injectors or bigger afm...

i had a tomie fuel pump thou...

In the end i ended up getting the pfc, 740cc nismo injectors (only $50 more than the 550cc) and a z32. and i've put that all on now and going to put my turbo on this weekend then get a tune asap.

Chaning the turbo can become a very costly project, in the beginning i through i could just throw the turbo on and it would all be fine but i was very wrong....

if your goal is 250rwkw (335rwhp), then you will need larger injectors for sure, along with a bigger afm (something like a z32 or q45).It is also always good to have some susepsion mods are you want to be able to put the power to the ground and you need a good clutch to do that also

Just to give you an idea here is a full list of my mods

hks cat-back + trust front + hks dump pipe

Z32 Afm + apexi Filter + cai box

D2 coilovers + rg castor rods + 17inch rims - button clutch

nismo 740cc + fmic + hks turbo + pfc + profec a ebc

thats about it i think

turbo upgrades for the rb25 and in fact the HKS GT-rs i think has been covered in at least 3 other threads. please do a search and look at the rb25 turbo upgrade thread. all the info you seek is covered,

but you will need a 5k mod shopping list to fit it and use it correctly

ecu

injectors

airflow meter

full exhaust

cold air intake

injectors

clutch

boost controller

Unless you already have them, you'd be better off getting the PFC/Injector/GTRS kit from nengun (find it in the "product promotions" section). It's around $4K and easy to install yourself if you're half handy with a spanner.

This turbo is right on the edge of the stock afm / injectors ... to get the most out of it and for security you really need to look at a Z32AFM and either injectors or a fuel reg.

And yes *cough*search*cough* the lag is pretty much the same as stock, very responsive on the street, a great mild/moderate upgrade in turbo terms

You may not quite make the 250rwkw; get the 2835proS is you want that guaranteed.. but you'll come damn close if you don't.

I'm very happy with mine.

its rated @ 400hp So ya can definatly make 250 rwkw.. me and 3 other mates did it without cams. after cams and cam gears headgasket and more boost im pushin 301 and mates pushin roughly 290 due to smaller cams and diffrent dynos..great street turbs..make sure its tuned well..

aswell as the above mentioned essential supporting mods, would you also add a hard intake pipe to the list?

or for those of you with the GT-RS - is the standard rubber pipe from the afm to the turbo holding up without sucking closed?

do front mount than fuel pump (can do fuel pump than front mount if you'd like) how ever if your goin the power fc and gtrs, do fmic and fuel pump than after that i'd suggest just buying the kit for the injectors pfc and gtrs straight from nengun and installing at the same time and adding a z32 afm just before you get your tune done

i havent got any complaints about these turbo's.. the r33 gtst ive come across running one of these is absolutely awesome spools up super fast and still carrys thru with decent topend

how ever i did see one of these on a s15 and it was pure crap but somehow i think it had an awful lot to do with the tuning so still cant really say anything bad about these turbo's

yeah that pipe holds up fine. i have changed it due to looks. you should not have problems with it.

    • There's restrictor pills in the stock boost control hoses. That's how they set the amount that was bled off and hence the "high" boost setting. The usual mod in the day was to remove it and send the "high" boost setting up to about 14 psi.
    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
