Went and picked up the Stagea from Toll today, well I picked it up, drove it down the road the to the nearest petrol station (just) as it was cutting out everytime I pulled up to make a turn. What a great first experience in a new car!

The problem has been diagnosed as a possible Air Flow Sensor failure.

I'll tell you what happened and you can give me your opinions:

1. Car hasn't been driven for 3 months so that may have an impact here.

2. Will start and idle

3. You could initially creep it away on idle and get it moving, this seems to have become harder to do.

4. Once I did get it moving it cruised along ok seemingly, I didn't make any serious throttle inputs though as I really didn't want to stop in a busy industrial estate full of speeding Semis!

5. Diagnosed as AFS fault by starting car, unplugging sensor and being able to rev the car up (running rough then of course) before it would stall.

6. You can't rev it up at all with the sensor plugged in.

I spoke to the Compliance shop and they said they had no issues with it and drove it a short distance without drama. That would have been last week.

Next question is where can I get one quickly and how much?

I have the option of sending the existing one off to be tested and repaired, that is an $80 charge to test first.

Any help would be great!

I have a shot of the Stagea on the back of the truck... Not the arrival I was looking for...

Cheers

;) Luke :P

God damn Luke, bad luck... my cosmiserations to you.

Dont let it getcha down; they are a top car for sure - something you'll be able to sort out with an exchange of a couple $$

How was the problem diagnosed, ie via #5, did you get any error codes as such? Try a ECU reset? I dunno - maybe do this post in the forced induction section, as it'll definately get some experts thinking there & replying, for sure.

My 96 was complied by Iamshe on the coast. It too cut out three times at low speed on tight turns. When I queeried Iamshe Phil said it was the shit petrol from the land of the rising sun. He was right. One fill of e10 plus and the Stag flew.

Hold the phone!

Crazy problem solved, the guys at the garage (where my Dad works) opened the air box and found a piece of the bonnet lining covering the hole on inside the intake side of the box!

Not sure how that got there...

Thanks for your input, car is driving well now so I am told!

Sad on the back of the truck:

All good now, picking up in the morning and giving it a very good clean!

Cheers

When I was on the cruise I organised on Saturday, I saw that (or a very similar) lining on the inside of the airbox, and was told that it's a sound-deadening device for the induction noise. It was only held on by a few brittle plastic clips, and Andy (EGA41T) removed his from his S2.

It IS meant to be there, but maybe the one on yours has just fallen apart over time.

Doesn't matter - the removal of it will not cause any problems, and may even benefit airflow slightly...

mmMMmmMMMm black, sweet! Also if you were to replace the AFM, buy a Z32 one as the replacement, they are a but more but have much better resolution!

Not quite the start you wanted but good to hear it was a relatively quick and cheap fix!

I pulled the sound deadener from the airbox of my S2 when i put my K&N in. It coveres about 1/2 of the filter & The induction noise volume increase was minimal.

No way it was deadener, paper thin material that was all coming away from the bonnet liner...

Goes well now though, clean up tonight then I will see what I have really got myself in to.

Cheers

at least the RACV truck would have been free no?

$250 (about 110km) so not real impressed...

Wasn't really an RACV deal, just lucky to know the right people at the right time, could have been much worse.

Luke

P.S. Thanks Tangles!

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
