Turbo now SOLD

Hey All,

Well today I purchased a new turbo for my R32 (RB20DET).

I have been told that it is the following, however he was not 100% as he purchased it as is...

R33 Exhaust Housing with Steel Wheel

Larger Wastgate - Unknown Actuator

Larger GARRETT Compressor housing with larger wheel

This came off an RB20 and was apparently a bolt up (other than an oil line that I was given)

Is anyone able to confirm this from the following pics? (Would be GREAT if you could tell me what type of Comp housing it is).

cheers skisII... how does yours go now? my Garrent housing look simalar (but I guess you would expect that :D )

Mine goes the same as before, i was not actually fitting the 2530 :)

i was fixing my exhaust manifold gasket and at the time a friend had his 2530 off the car so we were comparing :woot:

looks like its not ball bearing to me either! Dunno if i'd be putting this on an rb20!

well it was either this or a stocko r33 s2 turbo so for $500 it can't be any worse!

I believe it wend VERY well on the previous RB20 it was on so I don't know why you say that... Are stock turbos BB?

Really need to see it with the housings removed . Turbine housing is RB20/25 but core looks like water cooled T3 . Aluminium compressor backplate looks like TO4B , the compressor being 7/14 blade is probably the Buick Grand National TA34 299-4 . She's a typical bitza Hi Flow and the results are usually very average .

oh, interesting. Thanks for the educated insight... Having said that would you expect it to perform better than a stock RB25 turbo?

We will have to see how it goes, I just want to get a screamer pipe before I put it on...

if it's laggy as sin on your rb20 cat I'll swap ya my r33 turbo :(

ha, thanks for the offer Jaff but from what I have been told it worked well and I don't believe it will be but will update once it is on! should be about a month because I want to get a screamer first and will be doing my timing, water pump, pulleys ect at the same time!

series 2 rb20 turbo's are bb. Put it on and see how it goes, probably make good top end power but not too sure if you'll be too happy with the midrange. I wold probably say an rb25 turo is a far more user friendly turbo and very streetable for an rb20.

The rear wheel looks to be the same size and design as my old stage 2 highflow from gcg but mine had a bigger 6(12) blade compressor in it. I had full boost a bit over 4. I'd expect you should have something similar with your turbo, maybe a bit lower boost threshold somewhere in the high 3's.

I'll be interested to see how it goes

Well, I fixed up the coolant feed line (What a pain it was!) and took it for a run (YAY no leaking). Bit slow and no kick to it at 8psi so I wound it up to 14!

No wheelspin and has reasonable lag but pulls hard/solid. I would say I have more power now but not as useable... I am just about to go out and fix a small oil feed leak and will then take it for a real run and adjust the boost (I'd say 15psi before I get it retuned).

Not sure about it yet... Does have a LOT of top end though!

Will update when I have had a good run and play with it.

Not sure how happy I am with it really... Bit to laggy for my liking but does sound very cool! Once spooled up it goes off it's head but not good for off the lights or when you are in third and give it a punch it not responsive, you have to down shift. Think it comes in at about 3,500-4000rpm and full boost at 5000rpm.

I am already thinking about taking it off and swapping it for a R33 S2 turbo. I rekon it would go much better on an RB25!

Hmmmmm, lesson learnt I think. But will be much easier to do the swap the second time around. Might have to take you up on that offer Jaff! :D

Check the actuator is not the problem, being too long and holding the wastegate open.

Did you check that before you put the turbo on? I had a GCG on my 2.5 and it was as laggy as you describe, turned out the wastegate was being held open. Fixed that up, now nice and responsive.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
