personally i think all those oils are too thick. a X-50 or X-60 is too thick in my mind. unless you are pulling big power (big heat) and high rpm. nissan reccomend 7.5W30... now if you are going to the track etc it would be good to have a bit more thickness at operating temp. so 10W40 i think would be the go. taking into account your motor probably isnt new anymore, and you plan to give it a bit of a hiding. personally i use and like the motul chrono 300V. it's good shit.

Made the switch to Mobil 1 super syn 5w50 yesterday.

I wouldn't say it went entirely smooth though...

Made the change and started her up. The oil pressure rose nice and quick (different to Motul, and a good thing), lifter noise was less.

BUT as soon as I touched the throttle there was a loud audible "CLACK". Touched the throttle again, and "CLACK!". WTF?

Anyway, I let it idle for a bit, then I brought her up to 3000rpm, where the thing went, "CLACK! clack CLACK CLACK!" as the revs rose. I quickly let off.

Did it again, and no noise. No initial CLACK. No clacking noise at all. What the hell happened?

Took the car for a drive and all's good. The turbo spools a lot sooner, and there is less lifter noise.

Still concerned about the initial noise though.

Also, this morning in the carpark I noticed the same noise, but not so much of a "clack" but an electrical "tick" noise that only happens when the throttle is opened and the car is in gear, ie. touch the throttle when in gear and you hear a single "tick".

Does anyone know what's going on? Is a lifter stuck or something?

That's a doozy Wil. It's highly unlikely that using that oil will have caused that problem. I'm assuming the Motul oil you had was a 10w-x?, going to 5w cold rating in the Mobil 1 would have improved the oil flow to the lifter oil galleries at initial start up, if anything. You might need to elaborate on any other things you might have done while you were fiddling in the engine bay during the oil change.

Absolutely nada.

Car went up, undid sump plug, oil went over fingers, drained oil...Took oil filter off, spilt a bit of oil, let drain... Replaced with new oil filter, replaced sump plug, filled with oil, checked level, over filled as per this thread, started, rev'd, CLACK! Then no clack. Now "tick" on initial opening of throttle.

:

Previous oil was Motul Turbolight 4100 10w40.

WTF.

Is it possible the agents in the new oil are taking away that the old agents didn't get or something? I'm scared of changing oils for this theory..

Other than that maybe it's just loser and shit is getting tired in your engine?

Strange, I had similar noises when I changed from mobil 1 5W/50 to Motul Turbolight 4100 10w40, the lifter noises where more and this noise comming from the top end of the engine.

Changed it back to Mobil 1 and it was fine.

Weird.

Apart from the initial weird freaking noises, and that electrical "tick" noise on opening the throttle now, everything's good so far.

As I mentioned before the turbo is spooling alot earlier. (Really noticeable as I don't have the stock turbo).

Also the lifters aren't making as much noise as before.

I don't know what the hell the tick noise is though. Seems to be coming from injector no.1.... or the timing belt cover. AND it only happens when the throttle is opened (one single tick) then it's normal.

Oh, also the "tick" noise only happens when the car is in gear and the throttle is opened.

Seriously, what the hell?

Sounds exactly like mine.

A metal type ticking? Prolly just the engine being a bish.. and not waiting to drink the new oil.

How come you changed oils?

cause of this thread.... (and cause the lifters were making more noise after a long drive than they use to).

Well hopefully it will just be ok after a while. Otherwise change back to the motul one and see if problem exists or not.

i would love to know how a new brand of oil affects turbo response so dramatically. it must be some special shit!! lol :)

Oh yea.. @ $1000 a litre. :P

    • Nice one, I'd argue that the white S1 RS260 is certainly the best looking of the Stageas. And yes, fully agree on the forum situation. It's a bit of a shame, but at least SAU is a good place to be. I found the facebook groups to give me FOMO because people were trying to one-up each other and show off in some way. Feels much more natural here. There are people with seriously nice builds, but I can appreciate it rather than it making me question my life choices. Might be that people are more open with sharing how much work/money/suffering it takes to actually get there.
    • Evening, wanted to pop in and finally register to say hi to everyone here on SAU!   It's been a while since I've been active on a forum, but back in the day I used to be relatively active on ClubLexus and other hobby-related forums. I'm glad to see SAU is still around, since with the advent of Facebook and Discord it seems forums aren't what they once were. As a recent new owner of an S1 260RS Stagea, I've found so many older guides and helpful tips from SAU that I figured I needed to join and say a grave thank you. My recent acquisition has only become legal in the US for the past year, and knowing that similar car enthusiasts from across the pond have already figured out the kinks and tricks to get these 25+ year old cars running well. I look forward to diving into more of the SAU forums as well as hopefully contribute some info myself for future posterity.   As a pic tax, here is one of the few good photos I have of my Stagea. I hope to get way more in the future!
    • Is this where I say "Hey man my airbox cost me horsepower in my Naturally Aspirated Engine"? (I know you need them for legality in NSW)
    • 1.5mm alloy folded up, it will need a tweek, as the angled bend only got to around 45° as that was the max that the break press would get with the other bends, and I needed a fair bit more, but and the alloy is easy to bend too my will by hand once I trim the lower section out I'll Dremel out and form the angle and mounting point on the lower section when time permits  As for the lid, I'm looking at going a "cap", instead of a flat lid to hide the fixtures a bit
