My friend asked me to go halves in this with him for a little project for us to build/race. but we were too slow.

Ahh thanks for that Roy.

So you have to ask CAMS to drive everytime to an event or do you just go there and if you get stopped it comes out in the wash then?

Accordign to a friend who has several club historic/log booke cars its not overlyt diffcult to ring CAMS ans get a permit number to be driving the car. I understand that the permit effectively gives you 3rd party insurance whilst you are driving the car...can someone please confirm the accuracy of this?

I KNOW its not difficult as he does it all the time, but i havent looked into in great detail myself. When i finish the R32 and R32 EVO II is on the cards i will be lookign much closer at it

no the permit gives you the right to drive the ccar on the road, it is unregistered unless you have current permit from CAMS for that day.

You buy normal 3rd party with your rego like any car

The permit is very easy, it is an automated message system, just call and give them log book, rego, date and purpose and they give yo a number to run. And you can use it whenever you need to, while I was finishing off the race car I was getting a permit basically every day for a couple of weeks

Thanks Roy and Duncan.

So that means you're allowed to drive with the race/rally rego plate the RTA would give you.. otherwise that plate is "on" but it's not registered?

So.. that means the 3rd party I would have to pay for the same as a normal car? That's bodgy ;)

not not bodgy at all, its a great scheme.

For a start, you can't be defected for whatever yo do to the car as long as it is safe.....so cages, no cat, side pipe, screamer pipes, huge zorst, unsheilded pod, etc etc are all legal :D

And even more important for Jap Imports, you don't have to pay compliance to get your car on the road. Race/Rally imports have no SEVS or 15yo compliance ;)

So to get a car log booked (e.g. a road registered car) what do you need to do? Say if you were to substantially change the car for a track day? - such as new exhaust etc?

(by new exhaust, i mean a drain pipe that announces your arrival as you enter the suburb, which is only for track use, but would be fitted the day before then driven home for the night, then to the track the next day)

That may or may not work. Dont forget that circuits are opften around residential areas, and the EPA also frequent tracks and sound test cars...so you can be kicked off the track for beign too loud. Its not common, but ppl do get pinged for it.

Ring CAMS and get the info firsthand

The road/rally rego only works if you have road/rally rego... You don't call CAMS and ask for a number if you have normal road rego.

    • Ahhh, I need the whole head unit. I definitely needed to roll back through and review your setup, ha ha! Neat setup they have going on. I just need a full double din head unit. But I want good and responsive. I might have to review what the likes of pioneer have out these days.
    • Ok so after much research and talking with knowledgeable people I've got my turbo conversion done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.  Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd. But nothing drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic.  I'm sure there is may e 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Dose anyone here have any ideas?   Cheers guys
    • Sorry I haven't been following all the detail, so you may have tried this. Does it idle with the tiniest bit of throttle you can add? You've mentioned the IACV, does it have an AAC valve and have you adjusted it at all (ie, screw the idle adjust screw all the way in, then back it out a couple of turns until idle is stable)?
    • My bad, I unplugged the one underlined in red instead of yellow before. With the car started, after unplugging the IACV (the one underlined in yellow), it idled at around 400/500 for 3 seconds before stalling. Attempting to start the car without the IACV will not start the car.   It does stutter and sputter for around 5 seconds before dying. However, immediately after starting it, you can already hear some slight sputters from the exhaust.   It won't start with the AFM unplugged. If it is when the car has already started, it stalls in a few seconds.   Yesterday, I did take some logs using Nistune of 3 scenarios. Car idling till it stalls Car idling and unplugging the IACV Car idling and removing the AFM I also have some previous logs of when the Car is idling till it stalls and when driving and it cuts. I am not really knowledgeable enough to understand what to look for. After every test, car idles rougher and rougher, until I have to stop. It will be fine the day after.
    • There is no difference between a 17x8 and an 18x8. The total diameter of the tyre needs to remain +/- the same (so you don't mess up the gearing, speedo reading, and clearance when turning front wheels..... so you just need to use a lower profile tyre on th 18 than you do on the 17. /rocket surgery.
