Ok, ive only recently gotten myself an R33 GTS25t and im looking at modding it a bit, problem is im not too clued up on all the finer points of turbo cars. The first thing will be the 3" exhaust, but now im looking at an intercooler.

Firstly, what coolers can i get that use the factory pipes? (with extensions etc), and are there FMICs avaliable that have the entry and exit on the same side? (i think ive seen them somewhere before, but might have just been a twin entry)

Secondly, if i decided to get a full cooler and piping kit, what size cooler would i be looking at so i dont have to hack up much of the stock front kit? (its a facelift model). And also, for people who have done this, is there a noticable increase in lag?

Any help you guys can give me would be appreciated, cooler dimensions would be a big help. Sorry if this has been covered a million times, i did try searching!

ARC coolers have inlet/outlet piping on the same side.

Whatever FMIC you get, you will have to hack up the behind of the stock series 2 bumper - there's just not enough space.

With my FMIC I don't notice any increased lag.

What size FMIC do you have wink? Also should the intercooler piping be 2.5 inch or 3? The intercooler kit im looking at has 2.5 inch pipe but uses silicon reducers to fit to the 3" inlet and outlet on the end tanks.

there is a thread on page 1 about intercooling that will be worth reading for you.

Just note that with cooler quality, and anything really, you get what you pay for. The cheapest always isnt the best option.

If you dont plan on upgrading your stock turbo a R34 GTT cooler is a good option efficent for 200rwkw. Direct bolton no mucking arround with piping and cheep. Since your new to this either cheekout the R33 tuning guide at the website in my sig or do a search mate

cheers

I have the Justjap Type 2 kit. It's 2.5" piping + end tanks

If you have 3" end tanks, you'll have to chop up even more of the front bar as the end tanks are the things which take up the most space on the bumper.

Just go for a GTR sized intercooler of whatever brand you wish, not sure what the exact dimensions are but im sure someone can tell you.

You'll need to do a bit of cutting into the back of the front bar but it shouldnt be anything too major.

do it right, do it the 1st time buy a jap kit. I have a china/hybird kit and would advise against them the fit is shocking...

ARC,Blitz both have the piping returing to the stock holes.

Hks,Greddy need you to cut a hole near the waterbottle and have the piping running that way.

Im tossing up between a 600 x 300 x 76 or the 600 x 300 x 100 (Gktech) FMIC... considering the car has stock turbo and ecu i think the 76mm thick core is more then enough however i will be going larger turbo and PFC end of the year.. will the 76mm core handle 280 - 300rw/kw??

    • Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.
    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.
    • also possibly backed up to my filler and shat down it! 🤣
    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
