So my car got me to Brisbane with out a hiccup (can't say the same for my missus..)

now in the last 2 days, it occasionally has a weird problem.

it cuts out like it is missing, but stays "OUT" so to speak for much longer.

it happens more so when you have your foot into it.

I could be taking off in first gear and heavy acceleration will make it cut out.

it is a pretty HARSH cut too.

it's like got NO forward motion at all from it until I take my foot off the pedal.

I know what it's like to have a miss from spark plug or coils as I had it before and this is not the same.

with a spark miss, it cuts and comes back quickly..

at the moment, when it cuts, it's like it is dead for 2 seconds before coming back.

I thought maybe fuel filter is blocked but it seems to rev out fine in neutral.

but when there is load it cuts..

and to top all this off, it only happens occasionally.

mainly once fully warm and had a few stop goes like at traffic lights.

I won't get to check it properly till saturday so any response would be helpful.

mods:

exhaust

filter

turbo tech boost controller @ 11psi

fmic

everything else is stock including fuel pump.

I have checked:

plugs

coils

intercooler pipes

vacuum lines

it idles fine.

the first day it did this, it also had weird idle.

where after it cut out and came back during driving, at the next lights, the revs dropped to 800, then slowly rised to 1500, dropped to 900, then back up to 2000.

sort of like

rev, drop, rev, drop, rev, drop

hasn't done that since.

Kinda leads to me an electrical problem but not sure with what.

thanks in advance.

TT

if its definately throttle realted, try checking the voltages on the TPS.

no one i know hits full throttle on idle..

only other thing is it could be fuel pressure related as the std fuel pressure wont change on idle, as there is no boost to get it change on the FPR.

when you come to the lights does it drop revs and go back up?

he clearly stated at the end of his posts that it does go up and down at the lights. :| ... Ive had similiar issues with my skyline and ive had to at times pull over as the car has just turned off while driving. Makes pulling over hard with no POWER STEERING!... Im wondering if it is ECU related it has been a very hard thing to pin point ive had my mechanic look over the car and has basically said he would really need to see it doing it which wouldnt be easy to do as it is inconsistent.

Ill be watching this thread with interest as its very similiar to my issue.

you might try cleaning your AFM and/or you ACC valve.

The fact that it cuts out thought makes me think it is electrical (as you have too). Check all your connections (disconnect and reconnect), remove your earths, sand back/clean and refit...

it sounds like its electronically related. check your diagnostics on your ECU. Hopefully it may have picked up the problem and will tell you whats wrong. If the diagnostic on the ECU dont work, then i bet it may be your ECU.

GTST - i had this exact same problem

i re-soldered the inside of my AFM and it fixed the problem 100%

all you need is a soldering iron and some silicon

do a search for "solder AFM" and you will find the guide that i used

cheers,

Warren

PS to everyone reading... i don't want hundreds of PMs about what to do - i already have received 5 and that's 5 more than i expected!

Tandy electronics.

$13 - Soldering Iron

$8 - Solder

$6 - Black silicon

this morning I pulled out my air box, took the air flow meter of it, cut out the top and all the points were already intact..

(YES only 4 are attached,)

(this is all in the link that PHATR32 posted above)

I soldered over them anyway..

sealed it all back up.

then I had a look in the afm to see what condition it was in.

I thought it was a little strange that the afm wire probe in it was black instead of that red/orange colour my old skyline one was..

upon closer inspection in direct sun light, it was red/orange just with shit loads of oil and dirt on it.

so I walked to the nearest coles and got some engine degreaser.

degreased the inside of the AFM good.

washed it out.

degreased again and washed it out again till it was all noice and clean.

shook it dry.

pinched wifes hair dryer and dried it out good.

attached it back to the air box, plugged it all back in and I'm all god now.

so as per my original post about feeling like a noob, it is now quite obvious I am..

somtimes..

  • 3 years later...

I had the exact symptoms with the huge loss of power at wide open throttle and hunting idle. I removed the AFM and resoldered the joints and it made it better for a couple months so I got another AFM and it was sweet for a few months. The last couple weeks the idle has been hunting so I'm thinking this AFM may be rooted too, or the idle speed controller may need to be cleaned out.

ok i dont know if you have solved the problem and im not a mechanic (also a newby skyliner) but when you say you boot it and it cuts out is it like when you dont have traction controll off and boot it ????, it could be your coil packs are on there way out , i heard in the wet if you keep hitting the slip light (traction control ) it can cause your coil packs to crap out , might help sorry if its totaly wrong,

my car cuts out for like two seconds if i boot it with traction controll on , id say if your coil packs are failing if would feel the same since that how the traction controll works (asuming an rb30 has traction controll ??? i dont think they do )

stangely enough i had this exact problem when i accidently plugged in coil no. 4 the wrong way. yes thats righ i put the plug on up-side-down. I know this is really f*ken stupid and believe me its the last time i'll ever work in the dark. i always carry a torch in the car as a result of this. I had just cleaned my AFM, pod, gooed and taped the coils and cleaned and reset my IAC before this without having this problem at all but the car was hunting at idle and had a bit of a miss. then i did my plugs a few days later and the problem started. couldnt work it out for a day then decided to check the obvious, that being the last area of the engine i worked on (the plugs). yes i am a noob for this.

Dunno if this helps.

Thanks for reading.

    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.
    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
