Hi guys,

I will be swapping my R32's cooked transfer case for a fresh one within the fortnight. I have not come across much information on SAU in relation to swapping the transfer case.

Can anyone who has done so offer any advice/tips on doing so?

Are there any parts that need to be replaced? eg washers, o-rings or anything alike?

From what I am aware of at present to get the gearbox out I have to remove and install the following:

1. Speedometer cable

2. Front propeller shaft

3. Clutch slave cylinder

4. Starter motor

5. Gear stick

6. Reverse lights plug

7. Exhaust (from the front pipe or from the dumps?)

8. E-TS hydraulic air bleeder actuator

9. Gearbox obviously

Removing the transfer case from the gearbox?

I don't have all the details but it was pretty straightforward once the box is out

The hardest part was the shifter, there is a rod from the transfer case where the shifter goes down to the gearbox it was fidly. The transfer case is just bolted on from memory, not sure if there was a gasket.

All the details would be in the workshop manual

As I am attempting this in the driveway (backyard love :)) I would like to attempt to remove and replace the transfer case without taking the gearbox out (heavy bastard), eg I would prefer remove gearbox x-member/prop shaft and tailshaft to tilt the motor/box backwards towards the firewall thus giving me access to the top of the transfer case.

Has anyone attempted this with success?

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to do it, all the fiddly stuff is on top of the transfer case, even if you get your hand up there chances are you will drop the pin or rod into the box :P easier to take it off I reckon.

Would be interested to hear the trick if someone knows one :)

I've taken the transfer case off my busted gear box. Definately possible only with gearbox out of car.

Once you see the bolt and roll pins you have to remove in top of transfer case opening you will see what I mean. 1/2 hour job to pull apart with basic tools.

Box has to come down, no gasket, just use gearbox gasket goo. It's a good idea to change the selector shaft seal. Like others said its fairly straight forward when the box is on the ground. Pull the top cover off and knock the rollpin out enough so you can release the selector shaft.

Its a bitch to R+R the box off the car on the floor though much easier with a hoist and a tranny jack.

Drain the oil ouf of both before removing and dont forget to bleed the attessa.

You dont have to remove the dumps ( just as well they would be impossible to remove on the car), just the front pipes.

I just had my car up on the hoist and it appears my transmission fluid is leaking out of my transfer case somewhere. The mechanic couldn't pin point it exactly as obviously it sprays everywhere when driving but it appeared to be leaking out of where the front driveshaft connects and even possibly at a hydraulic hose at the rear of the transfer case.

Hopefully the box doesn't have to come out for this.

    • Have you done the Ignition Sync Wizard in the AEM software?
    • Find out what RPM it was idling at with the IACV unplugged. It's very weird that the rpm didn't change at all, and then it stalled. When it stalls is it nearly like a switch off, like you've turned the engine off? Or is it more stutters and sputters and coughs to death over a few seconds? Or does the RPM just slowly keep going down and down? Have you done a test of trying to start it with the AFM unplugged? Does it still die?     If you Follow Josh's advice on using Nistune to check the voltages (which is a perfect method!) if you see anything out of wack voltage wise, THEN get the multimeter out and read the voltage directly at the sensor. If the two vary, then you're now looking for a wiring issue vs a sensor issue. So be aware, what the ECU sees, may not be what the sensor is actually saying too...
    • You very likely need to get it on a dyno and tune it. My assumption is, you've got an RB25DET tune in it, which has a different manifold, different injectors, and different cams as a minimum. What O2 sensor are you running?   When you say it runs extremely rich from idle all the way to redline, is this just free revving it you see that?
    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.  
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
