Hunting Problem, Little Help Please

Hi Guys,

I think I might have tracked down the cause of my hunting problem to the O2 sensor in the exhaust next to the turbo, when it is plugged in it hunts, when I unplug it she runs smoothly, for about 10 minutes... Is it reasonable to assume that if I replace the sensor I will fix the hunting problem, or is this an indication of a different faulty thing. Sorry for the noob like question, I still have much to learn. Any help is much appreciated.

it could fix the problem. could be a mix of other things aswell and that is just a small part. depending on how many k's your car has done its probably worth replacing it anyway. costs about $110 from autobarn for a NGK direct fit. also might be worth cleaning the idle control valve.

Mmm, should have mentiond I have done some other fault finding, aac, tps ect.. it is also pretty heavy on fuel too, so I am pretty sure it will work, just wanted a seccond opinion before I got my hopes up, its such an annoying problem...

I had this problem, turned out to be my afm. I used some carbie cleaner [pressure can] on it and cleaned it up. It was OK after that.

afm probably had some oil or dirt on it.

Found the same intermittent problem on my Bro-in-laws car and remedied the hunting by disconnecting the O2 sensor. The problem was he had already replaced the aftermarket O2 sensor with another (same) item he purchased from Autobahn for $110. Once I threw a geniune item in the problem was fixed. The aftermarket one worked fine sometimes but intermittently caused the car to hunt.

There was a thread on this topic a couple of months ago probably worth having a read. In any instance a genuine item is the safest bet.

      Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

      The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same.       Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
