Hey there, just got a car I'm looking at buying inspected and although there were a fair few other things wrong with it, the one i'm majorly concerned with is one listed as requiring early attention and described as. Front wheels, one side is 20mm further forward than other. It says that it will require specialist attention to acertain the reason for it. I rang a few places and they all seemed to think the most likely reason for it would have been an accident at some stage. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with a similar problem or knows how likely it is that this could be a serious problem? I don't want to buy the car only to find out that it has been crashed and has some serious chasis damage.

It could be something as simple asa worn radius rod bush, or something as bad as a bent chassis rail. Any decent suspension shop should be able to do a complete wheel alignment check and point you in the right direction.

I work for a joint what does Wheels Tyres and Alignments, and the front wheel on the left side of the car should be set forward a little more than the right side, cos of the "australian road conditions" we run a higher road camber here, so the left wheel is set forward a little bit to allow for the car to drive straight on the road.

Hmm, if it's chasis damage (worst case scenario) then it could very well be irrepairable right? I've never heard of one wheel being set forward a little more than the other... would it be set forward as much as 20mm?

What would be my best course of action to get the problem diagnosed? Someone mentioned maybe take it to a wreckers and they have a machine there to check the body alignment using the datum points etc.

That would be a panel beater, make sure they have the data for a Skyline

Yep more caster on the LHS front to stop the drift into the gutter caused by the camber of the round.

But 20 mm is a bit too much

Hey guys,

This is actually my skyline he is talking about.

Here are two wheel alignment read-outs one (bobjane) before the white line gear was put in and one (wilkinsons) after the white line one was put in.

They were done less then a month apart.

The bob jane shows castor left +6'33" right +6'48"

The wilkinsons shows castor left +7'38" right +5'38"

Isnt this proof that all that has happened is that wilkinsons has set the whiteline adjustable caster up for aussie roads? also wilkinsons never mentioned any problems what so ever so I really think eveyrthings ok.

I will be ringing on monday to confirm, as this sale is hinging on this car being straight or not.

EDIT: the bobjane readout was from one of those crappy ribbon printers so it didnt scan well but you guys can make out the numbers yeah? its much easier to read from the original.

If it is the castor setting an easy check would be to climb under and measure from the centre of the front castor rod bolt to the first of the 2 on the lower control arm.

If one's shorter than the other then i'd say that it's all in the adjustment.

I just got down and had a look, you can see more yellow on the right one I think it was and less on the left. Considering the angle they are sitting on is how you adjust them and one is sitting out further I would say the mystery has been solved, will confirm with the suspension guys on Monday.

RAC is getting a letter of complaint next week for sending out a mechanic who wrote a false and misleading statements about my car which resulted in the sale of the car being stalled and possibly called off.

Dude if there was a mojor problem Wilkinson would have told you. I really doubt there is an issue. Sounds like alignment settings to me. The RAC job is to pick faults. They are normally mechanics, not alignment experts so i would take on board the oil leaks etc they point out, but probably not the alignment.

Yes 20 mm is a bit much for castor, but was the RAC telling you the truth. got the same problem in Adelaide with RAA car inspectors, tell ya lies and dont know what they are on about.

Bob Janes here in Adelaide are prolly the worst people in the world to let near your car. I dont know what they are like anywhere else in the country, but here in Adelaide, they will tell you that your car needs half the front end rebuilt just to get the work... and here in adelaide a few of my mates own the old classic holdens and chevs, and every bob janes they have gone to, dont know how to wheel align there cars, so if you need your car to be wheel aligned to specs or to match Aust road conditions, I would honestly look for someone in a small local business, cos they have to do it right, else no one would goback to them.

Just my 2 cents worth on wheel alignments from bob janes.

Sorry if it seems like i am havinga cry over businesses, but i just offer my advice.

WARNING to anyone buying or selling your car, make sure you tell the mechanic to ignore anything after market on the car otherwise they will list aftermarket parts as problems that need fixing.

exhaust, pedals, airpod etc.

The mechanic could have just looked under the wheel arch and seen the BRIGHT YELLOW adjustable caster rod thing and measured it to make sure it was all ok.

    • The rain is the best time to push to the edge of the grip limit. Water lubrication reduces the consumption of rubber without reducing the fun. I take pleasure in driving around the outside of numpties in Audis, WRXs, BRZs, etc, because they get all worried in the wet. They warm up faster than the engine oil does.
    • When they're dead cold, and in the wet, they're not very fun. RE003 are alright, they do harden very quickly and turn into literally $50 Pace tyres.
    • Yeah, I thought that Reedy's video was quite good because he compared old and new (as in, well used and quite new) AD09s, with what is generally considered to be the fast Yokohama in this category (ie, sporty road/track tyres) and a tyre that people might be able to use to extend the comparo out into the space of more expensive European tyres, being the Cup 2. No-one would ever agree that the Cup 2 is a poor tyre - many would suggest that it is close to the very top of the category. And, for them all to come out so close to each other, and for the cheaper tyre in the test to do so well against the others, in some cases being even faster, shows that (good, non-linglong) tyres are reaching a plateau in terms of how good they can get, and they're all sitting on that same plateau. Anyway, on the AD08R, AD09, RS4 that I've had on the car in recent years, I've never had a problem in the cold and wet. SA gets down to 0-10°C in winter. Not so often, but it was only 4°C when I got in the car this morning. Once the tyres are warm (ie, after about 2km), you can start to lay into them. I've never aquaplaned or suffered serious off-corner understeer or anything like that in the wet, that I would not have expected to happen with a more normal tyre. I had some RE003s, and they were shit in the dry, shit in the wet, shit everywhere. I would rate the RS4 and AD0x as being more trustworthy in the wet, once the rubber is warm. Bridgestone should be ashamed of the RE003.
    • This is why I gave the disclaimer about how I drive in the wet which I feel is pretty important. I have heard people think RS4's are horrible in the rain, but I have this feeling they must be driving (or attempting to drive) anywhere close to the grip limit. I legitimately drive at the speed limit/below speed the limit 100% of the time in the rain. More than happy to just commute along at 50kmh behind a train of cars in 5th gear etc. I do agree with you with regards to the temp and the 'quality' of the tyre Dose. Most UHP tyres aren't even up to temperature on the road anyway, even when going mad initial D canyon carving. It would be interesting to see a not-up-to-temp UHP tyre compared against a mere... normal...HP tyre at these temperatures. I don't think you're (or me in this case) is actually picking up grip with an RS4/AD09 on the road relative to something like a RE003 because the RS4/AD09 is not up to temp and the RE003 is closer to it's optimal operating window.
    • Either the bearing has been installed backwards OR the gearbox input shaft bearing is loosey goosey.   When in doubt, just put in a Samsonas in.
