Ok, i put in an rb25det into my r31 last week end, its an auto and has all been wired to suit, fuel is flowing to the engine but its not firing, we got spark to #1 plug then checked #2 and nothing, then we checked #1 again and nothing there???

also the plugs were dry which after 20 min of cranking the engine over trying to get it to start, i'd asume the plugs would be wet with petrol??

we tried to do timing last night but lost the light, tonight with lights we'll look at the timing and check injector flow and palse...

looking for ideas before i have to take it to a work shop....

Check for 12v at the white wire going into the ignitor during IGN on. It should be fed through the IGN relay down near the ECU (one of the two main blue relays).

To check injectors are getting voltage, pull off an injector plug, and check for voltage during cranking.

Next thing is making fuel is actually getting to the injectors. Do you get the hum of the fuel pump when you flick on the IGN ?

Just the usual obvious ones when wiring an rb25 engine into a non factory body.

Make sure the coils and injectors have power. The coils probably will if you have maintained the 2 relays near the ecu as all you need to do there is give it get constant power to one side of the relay and the rest of the loom doesn't need to be touched. Injectors will come straight off a switched ignition through the big SMJ plug so check that they are getting power.

The power for everything in the rb25 comes from the big SMJ and a surprising number of things are powered off different pins on this plug so just trace every wire that runs direct from the plug into the loom and figure it out from there. In most case the ecu uses negative triggers so almost every wire that runs straight to a sensor plug off the SMJ is a switched ignition. There are a few exceptions like the temp gauge and a couple ot others i cant think of right now though.

the loom for the engine and auto box are from an r33 and have been professionally wiried to mate with the r31 system, the only issue i had there was tyhe neutral saftey switch, which i have bridged for now for starting perposes...

i just spoke to the bloke who wired it and he suggested manually checking for the injectors firing, first testing power is getting to #1 injector (test light on each injector wire, testing one of the 2 wires at a time), if power then remove the CAS and turn it with the power on so i can hear if the injector are firing...

oh and it came with plugs already installed..... HEHE...

is it a series 1 or 2 motor? series 1 have a square TPS sensor, and an ignitor box at the back of the rocker cover the series 2 has them in the coil packs (or ecu not sure). there may be a chance that some of the coils are mixed up (some series 1, some series 2), or the ecu is the wrong series.

it must be a S1 as i have an ignitor and TPS, all the coil packs seem the same, identical to rb20det coil packs..

i'll check there is power to the injectors tonight then go from there, if there is spark but its not starting i'd say its injectors.. we can also test there flow tonight to just in case??

The really (stupidly) obvious question - the fuel hoses are connected to the rail correctly?

yeah they are in the correct order, checked and double checked, fuel filter line connected to the fuel rail, return line coming from the fuel regulator??

Sorry Gordon didn't read the last part of your reply, i have wired in a relay so the r31 pump is working fine, primes when the key is turned and can feel the pulse in the fuel line when its cranking, then no pulse just after we stop cranking.

On the SMJ plug will be a light grey wire, this is the 12v for all the injectors.

The ecu then pulses an earth to each injector. Check that the light grey wire has a 12v constant on it.

You should be able to take out one of the injector plugs and with the grey wire hooked up to a 12v constant get that same reading with a multi meter off one of the injector plugs.

You will need to earth the multi meter against the car, then measure the reading from the grey wire in the injector plug.

Just to make sure you hooked it up right.

Also you should place a 30amp inline fuse between the grey wire and ingnition. As R33 has this too.

That was one of the problems when I couldn't get mine first started. I reckon it's about a 90% chance yours is the same problem. If not I might be able to drop around one night this week and go through a few other checks, seeing as you're local.

Thaks mate, i tested the #1 injector plug last night, using a test light i placed one end on the body and the other to each terminal one at a time and cranked it, the light never flashed, i also spoke to Kev, the bloke who wired the loom, he thinks i may have blown the relay but he's coming to the coast this sat and will stop in to have a look.

the power to the ecu has been taken from the original r31 ecu plug next to the AFM, kev said the power to the injectors comes from there to. i think i'll wait for him to came down and he can sus it all out...

gordon, i was specking to syphon about your conversion and he said you had a few problems too, he also said yours is running perfectly now..

    • Sorry, just assumed that talk of coloured pads meant EBC red/green/yellow/shit stuff. I don't know the DBA pads, but it's a reasonable bet that they will be OK. DBA make good stuff generally. Those 4000 series rotors I linked to are very good. I may well replace the RDA rotors I have with those when required.
    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
