Hey,

I just found out today that my R34 GTT has been fitted with a HUGE aftermarket oil cooling system that i didnt even know about! My mate showed me some pics in a mag of a stock R34 GTT oil cooler setup and asked where mine was and I got very pissed off that my car didnt have it. Then we took a look under the bonnet to double check that it definately wasnt there. I asked him where all my oil lines were and he searched but couldnt locate. Then he stepped back in disbelief and pointed to what i thought was my radiator. He went and grabbed his mags again and compared my car to the stock photos. It turns out my car has a HUGE 600mm oil cooler infront of my radiator along with an electric thermo fan bolted onto it, then my radiator sits where it should with another thermo fan bolted onto the other side. Then after closer investigation, it seems i may have a larger than stock radiator also... mine has a "CALSONIC" radiator with a chromish sticker saying "74" on it, but all the pics of the stock radiators in the mags had "71" on their sticker, so my mate thinks it may be a larger one... it also has nissan stampped into it... so we are not 100% sure.

This got me thinking more about my car, as I imported it directly from Japan only a few weeks ago, but I was told i was purchasing a fully stock one, but when it arrived, it was modded up nicely. When i got the car home and got fomfortable with the handling etc, i switched my electronic boost controller over to high boost and planted it, and to my horror, the boost guage in the dash which use to go up to .5 bar (7 psi) shot up past the 1.0 bar (14 psi) line and stopped at the end of the guage. I thought i had blown the engine or something but then tuned it back to run 12 psi on high boost for safeguarding the engine till i know what is going on etc.

Would it be possible at all to run at least 1 bar (14+ psi) using my stock injectors/computer etc??? I thought they were limited to 14 psi then they get a fuel cut to prevent damage etc? What would i need to do to see if i have larger injectors and an aftermarket computer without pulling the engine and car apart?????

Any help / comments / info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

14 psi is basically the limit for stock computer/turbo etc. Anything after that your pushing the life of the turbo and the computer will rich and retard.

To check if you have an aftermarket ecu go to your passenger seat and just to the left of were your left leg would usually sit in the footwell there will be a kickpanel. Take the panel off and the ecu is under there. If it says Nissan its more than likely that is the stock computer. The most common ECU change is to the Apexi Power FC so it may have one....

how did the car feel when you gave it a boost at above 14 psi? was it sorta spluttering?

lol the oil cooler you speak of is your aircon.. Your rad is stock too. Calsonic make lots of stock parts for Nissans. Sorry to rain on your parade.. :

Check if your ECU has been chipped.. I wouldn't go boosting around until you have someone check your AFR's

Drift_Limo - Ok, thanks for that! So the pics in the mags were of GTT's without air con? Or was that fitted as stock without having to be an option? Why would i NOT have a oil cooler then, because there is plenty of room there where it should be... And my oil temp never rises much above the line BELOW half way (about 100 degrees i think it sits at when completely warmed up) It stays there from the long drive from Sydney and when i give the car a bit of a flog...

I'll check about the ECU tomorrow in the kickpanel.

Stel - No, the car felt and sounded fine at high boost (1 - 1.5 bar) and just kept pulling...

More info/comments would be good!

Thanks for the replies!

I'm unaware of any skyline that has an oil cooler standard?? Could be wrong.

Oilcoolers don't need thermo fans I know that much.

You'll find that most Nissan imports (and others) run the same or simular configuration with the aircon condensor thingo infront of the radiator. Your car shouldn't overheat with a bit of a thrashing.. It's a freakin R34!! They are designed for the occasional thrash :D

Also don't rely on stock temp gauges.. Though yours would be credible as its fairly new.

Wich magazine are you referring too?

Drift_Limo -

I just checked the kickpanel and it IS a factory computer :D

It was a recent (even latest?) copy of either FastFours or Hot4s mags. I'll double check tomorrow coz its my mates mag. Only reason we got into investigating my car in the first place was because of the oil cooling guide in it. They recommend an oil cooler but then have pics of a stock R34 GTT as a sample WITH one fitted as stock they claim... I just had a look of some other R34 GTT pics i have saved and none of them seem to have the oil cooler fitted either... maybe it was a typo in the mag and they meant to say R34 GTR?

Anyway, on the subject of aftermarket computers, would you recomment a microtech or power fc???

I found microtechs for $1450 and power fc's for $1349 so im leaning more to the power fc moneywise (only $100 i know), but have heard microtechs have more in-depth capabilities of tuning and have more functions, and are more commonly able to be tuned by more people than the fc...

Thanks all.

I also forgot to mention the reason why i was going into the temp guage is because the guide in the mag said its common for a mildly tuned car's oil temp to sit around 120 - 130 degrees and thought that mine was sitting 30 degrees lower due to the large oil cooler... ???

My car is a 1998 model, but yeah, all the guages read fine and are quite resposive quickly...

Is there any way of getting rid of that annoying 180km/h speed restriction, or do you have to replace the computer?

Thanks again.

Definitely not safe if any of the supporting systems are stock. Although I'm surprised you didn't hit boost/fuel cut which kicks in around that level.

And if it is stock, you won't be making anymore power at 14psi than at 11-12psi because the turbo is far out of its efficiency range.

Hey,

The photos in the mag i am talking about are in Hot4s Mag Issue 139 (Latest issue) on page 151.

I have a MANUAL R34 GTT and i do NOT have the small looking oil cooler they claim is standard so i dont know what is going on. I cant even see any oil lines or brackets anywhere for where it MIGHT have been... lol.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Don't think any skylines GTR or gts, gtst, gtt came with oil coolers. If you give your car a thrash on the street you'd struggle to get it over 100-110 deg oil temp, on the track you could get it much hotter. For street driving don't think you need an oil cooler, for track, you definatly should have one.

Wouldn't belive what they write in HOT4's....

Hot 4's doing stories on Skyline 6's. Either they have no stories or are just envious. Still they should stick to their rice. And you have a real car so don't need to read their crap. The info on here is more reliable anyway.

Just enjoy your car for a little while until you learn what the right mods to make are, then take it to a reliable workshop.

Strange thread. Post pics mate.

GTT's do indeed come standard with an oil cooler but it's not like you think. There is a device that is plumbed in between the block and the oil filter that is also plumbed into the cooling system. This is an oil cooler... of sorts.

Also, take it to a dyno and get it checked out before you run ANYTHING other than stock boost. You could very easily blow your engine or your turbo.

Generally, get someone who knows what they are looking at to have a look for you instead of trusting hot4's. Go to a cruise with some of the SAU QLD guys.

Here is a pic of the oil cooler that Abo Bob's talking about ('scuse the weird angle, the Neo was hanging in mid air halfway into the engine bay when the shot was taken)

post-2745-1151143136.jpg

It's the bronze-coloured cylindrical object to the left of the oil filter.

I've also seen them on RB26's and R33 RB25DET's.

Hey all,

Here is a pic to show you what i mean... [see attachment]

There is no "stock oil cooler" on the left... and the chrome sticker on the radiator has "71" on it where the other 5 or so R34 GTT's I have seen had "74" on them.

See on the right how there is a thermo fan connected to what looks like a cooler or some sort which has been determined to be something for the air con...

Comments?

That's the Air Con Consender. Sorry.

GTTs DO NOT have a standard oil cooler of any type.

you WILL require an oil cooler of some description, proper type, mounted in the driver side of your Nismo front bar if you want to do any type of track work.

BASS OUT

    • Good tips, will get on those tomorrow. When doing the maintenance I did move a few of those connectors around, and things that are old tend to not like moving around. (Like me).
    • Don't try it. It will be shit. Better chance of damaging the engine than gaining any knowledge about the old one. Maybe, but unlikely, especially if the O2 sensor is working. You can use NissDataScan to look at the stock ECU.   Cleaning the AFM is seldom necessary and seldom helps. The R35 coil & loom conversion should eliminate dud coils or plugs. But as you still have misses - look to the plug where the coil loom connects to the engine loom, and the CAS plug. Need quality connections there. Also look to injector plugs. And the AFM plug while you're at it. Also look to whether your injectors are clean and flowing evenly. Get them out and onto a testbench.

    • Hey folks. I've been lurking and browsing the forum for a while, since I got into my head that I wanted a skyline. Having purchased an overpriced completely stock GTT, (only "mods" it has is HKS pod filter and catback) now that it became legal in the US, it was all glorious and sututu noises here and there. But then I wanted to do things right and went to do basic maintenance. After all the fluids, filters done, I did the spark plugs, that's when the problems started.. First the car started spluttering at around 4.5k RPM. Which I gapped down the new plugs and that solved the sputter there, but the car now always misfires at idle with pops when lifting off and shifting 2nd to 3rd. Similar to the issues in this recent thread. I've been banging my head against the wall, reading the threads here and trying suggestions for a couple months now, so decided to start this one to explain exactly what I tried and what is going on. The symptoms of the issue: Idle and low revs misfiring intermittently. You can hear the exhaust tone change and the shakes on the shifter knob. It happens frequently, but doesn't seem to have a rhythm to it. Pops when backing off throttle. It pops and or burbles almost feels like it spits fire when it pops. (Happens mostly in 3rd gear at around 2k RPM). When under load and after 6k RPM, it also pops when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. There's a ticking noise at around 2k RPM in 2nd gear going downhill, seems unrelated though but I am out of educated and downright dumb guesses. Not noticeable lack of power when putting the car into load. The attempted diagnosis and solutions: Unplugging coils when the car is running This did nothing to change the idling and tone shift for every cylinder. Checking the exhaust headers with thermometer They all are within what I'd say it is margin of error of the laser thermometer New spark plugs Tossed two new sets, copper, iridium and using the old ones, still misfiring, even re gapped to 0.8mm, still same thing. MAF cleaned with the "specific" spray cleaner No changes in the issues what so ever. Brand new loom and r35 coil conversion (was going to add the r35 coils anyway) car runs arguably better, still misfires, but seems like does less frequently. Placebo? Code 21 now being thrown, thanks nissan gods. Removed the CAS to check the shaft for play or anything. CAS seems all fine, nothing that indicates any issue, visually speaking. Things to attempted next: Ordered a new MAF (chinesium from Amazon, to be able to return regardless of result). Fuel with proper gas, maybe it is this California water that they sell as gas that is to blame? Plugin the link ECU and check the info using the built in base map. Go back to BMW and eat my rob bearing breakfast without milky oil mixture.   Do any of you have experienced anything like this or have any suggestion?
