Them Crazy Americans And Their Turbos

haven't seen that before, would be interested in having a look too.

i heard of, but not seen, a guy put 8 turbos on a v8 in the states. it took about 20 seconds of reving to get the manifold glowing red. it was on an old chevy or something, and the intercooler was nearly the width of the car, which is huge cause those old yank tanks are about 2 lanes wide.

Underbonnet temps would be great, so would intake temps. But Hello Lag :laugh:

also those exhausts look very restrictive.

and apparently lag is not a problem.

i seen a commodore at the recent automotive trade fair in sydney exhibition hall a couple of weeks ago that had the set up ur talking about, 1 turbo though, it was mounted way back at the arse end i think it was even behind the diff, then the miles of alloy piping to get to the intercooler. it looked a bit silly. shame i cant remeber the company name that had it on show.

yeh i saw one tv where they did a turbo kit like that on sum POS ricer, think it mighta been a civic, there excuse was underbonnet space (might not have been a civic, coz i think the exhaust manifold was on the rear side of the engine).

not only would there be massive lag from the length of the cooler pipes etc, but the exhaust will have lost almost all of its heat (from 900 or whatever straight out of the head, to cool enough you can hold your hand over the exhaust tip) and there would be sweet f*ck all thermal expansion and all those wonderful things that actually makes a turbo spool up. leave this one for the civic with full sick neons bro

If engine bay space was an issue, I'd still prefer a centrifugal supercharger to a turbo that's located on the side of the car.

It'd be far more efficient, and its about as non-invasive as this turbo setup.

Turbos are far more efficient than a centrifugal supercharger. The supercharger is almost exactly the same design as a turbo, but is belt driven rather than using the exhaust gasses to spin the blades. A supercharger draws power from the engine via the belt, meaning that it is less efficient. Turbocharging is by far the most efficient form of forced induction.

To give you an idea, one guy I know of was running a 355ci V8 with a Vortech blower running 8 psi, it made 420rwhp. He has now changed to turbo (GT4088 from memory), and it makes the same horsepower on 4psi, and makes well over 500 on 8psi.

Also, the supercharger is worse for space than a turbo as well, particularly when you are after big hp. Some centrifugal blowers are over 13" in diameter, imagine trying to install that in your engine bay.

Given the context that I wrote this in, did you even bother to read how a STS Turbo kit works before replying?

The STS turbo setup would be less efficient than a centrifugal supercharger, and its not exactly designed to chase big power.

on this topic.

i beleive the length of the pipes etc would be very very close if not less than the volume that a normal front mount cooler and the large pipes they seem to all have

    • Hello Liam - HA - somewhere in flies - possibly I have an update, but I have been so busy, projects have taken a back seat to getting business back on track.  I will let you know the outcome, but I think I am going to go for the 8HP,  CHEERS.  ELVIS
    • Thanks Joshuaho96, yes - as someone else also suggested, the 8HP seems the 'smart choice' - HA - and ZERO to do with cost, but I am sure 8 speeds will be better than 6 speeds - HA - maybe.  I will purchase a new 8HP,  Thanks.  ELVIS.
    • Nobody said anything about getting a "...cheap Falcon box..."- it was JUST a question about a specific transmission.  And YOU may have a problem with not enough $ - HA - I do NOT - so please keep your comments like you are some financial guru to yourself.  BUT - much appreciated re the cost of a new 8HP and I twill probably be the way I go.  Thanks.  ELVIS.
    • Most people I know in the BMW world are swapping 6HPs for 8HPs. The 6HP has a big issue with one of the clutch drum bushings wearing out shockingly early which leads to them going into limp mode going into 5th/6th gear as the oil pressure loss from the worn bushing causes clutch slip. Even with the adaptations in shifting the TCU can't bump line pressure enough to keep the clutches from slipping and burning. I've personally looked at a 335d with 6HP28 with one owner and ~90k miles on it and the transmission adaptations were way out of spec and even though it nominally drove ok I'm confident it would have needed a full rebuild sooner than later. Other than that they're fine, but the 8HP doesn't really have weird issues like this to my knowledge and they're in everything these days so pulling them out of crashed cars isn't too hard.
    • There is an ABS pump and a few solenoids. You could trigger the front/rear solenoids with a pressure bleeder attached with a Consult 2.
