Hey guys,

Picking up a set of 32gtst rims cheap off a mate, normal colour however Im thinking of painting them black.

What is involved?

Easy to do for the average bloke?

Or best to take it to a spray shop?

Anyone here can give me some tips or info that would be great!

Cheers,

Chris

just wash em and wipe them down with some prepsol or something and hit em with some gloss black ... easy as, even if you get paint on the tyres the prepsol should get it off easy enough... ive done a couple of sets ... they come up nice really easily..

sand them back with some wet and dry.. maybe grit 800 or so.

put a coat of grey primer, then 2 coats of gloss black and afterwards a coat of poly clear..

its pretty easy.. so you shouldnt have a problem. need and other tips give me a buzz

Awesome !

Thanks for the reply guys - Im guessing Bunnings for the black high gloss enamel?

Cool - I can grab some prepsol off a mate - thats easy :O

Any tips on painting them? special techniques? set up? safety??

Slyne/ricky - when you say sand them back with wet and dry - is that similar to doing panels? Ive done a lil bit of work at a mates work shop and done that - so it shouldnt be too hard :P

Steve - hahah Im lazy too but this will keep me busy for once!!!

look at the end of the day if you dont sand them back the paint wont stick.. if it does it wont last long..

i painted mine on my 33 about 3 weeks ago and they look grouse.

if its easier i'll give you a step by step plan.

1. sand back the rim with wet and dry (you will tell the difference when its sanded)

2. dry them with a cloth and a heat gun or hair dryier to fasten the drying process

3. wipe the rim with wax and grease remover, to remove any grease left on the rim

4. mask up the tyre with masking tape/newspaper so you dont get any overspray on the tyre's

5. spray 1 coat of grey primer (makes the paint stick/last)

6. after drying with heatgun or hairdryer, sand back the rim very lightly

7. spray 1 coat of colour as desired (mist coat)

8. dry with heatgun or hairdryer

9. apply 2nd and final coat of paint (second coat should be heavier than first coat)

10. after fully dry, spray 1 coat of clear

there isnt really a technique, just try not to get any runs.

if you need a hand or want me to come help you out

i'll be more then happy to come give you a chop out.

i'll post some pics up so you can have a look at mine, they turned out good.

I work at ROH wheels australia, on the paint line, ..

Ive powder coated hundreds of wheels, painted, clear coated etc..

if u use the cheap spray paint to spray your wheels they may look good for about 3 months. even if u use a base coat etc....

get them done pro with black powder coat and 2 coats of clear.

thats what Ive done to my wheels and they look very pro and shinny..

I've painted a set of wheels myself in the past and they turned out nice but they looked pretty average after about 3 months. You just can't get the same results with a pressure pack can as you can getting a proper job done IMHO. Just got my R32 GT-R wheels done properly by a spray painter and they look like a better job than what I did straight away. Cost was $260 for 4 wheels.

fat32 - they look good mate! real good !

I've always wanted to do it - trial and error as they say so best way is to learn and say i've given it a go and done it!

to be honest I dont care if they last less than 3 months - they were cheap rims to start with!!!

cheers!

Chris!

    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go
    • I don't get in here much anymore but I can help you with this.   The hole is a vent (air relief) for the brake proportioning valve, which is built into the master cylinder.    The bad news is that if brake fluid is leaking from that hole then it's getting past the proportioning valve seals.   The really bad news is that no spare parts are available for the proportioning valve either from Nissan or after market.     It's a bit of a PITA getting the proportioning valve out of the master cylinder body anyway but, fortunately, leaks from that area are rare in my experience. BTW, if those are copper (as such) brake lines you should get rid of them.    Bundy (steel) tube is a far better choice (and legal  in Australia - if that's where you are).
    • EMU Classic. For what I need it to do I see no reason to upgrade. Link and Haltech would both cost an extra chunk of money for a lot of unutilized features
